samba - Apr 2001 - tar extracting samba-2.2.0.tar.gz

I downloaded this version to install and cannot get the tar command to work.
We are running AIX version 4.3.2.  It appears that we might need gunzip
which I am not familiar with.  Is there a way to get this file extracted or
to download a different not using gunzip?

Sometimes when I download tar.gz files in windows the extentions are 
incorrect.
I have to rename the file on my unix promt to <name>.tar.gz.
