I am running R 1.0.1, ESS 5.0 and GNU Emacs 20.4.1 under SuSe Linux 6.3, but I cannot get ESS to start R. I have tried mailing a bug report from within ESS but have received no reply after a week. The symptoms are: I follow the instuctions in the ESS README, go M-x R, but R terminates with the message "must set --save, --nosave or --vanuilla". I do that (have to hack the ESS source essd-r.el to do so, setting the variables in /home/me/.emacs doesn''t work) , but then ESS reports "timeout waiting for prompt", even when I set the timout period to a _very_ long time. Has anyone set up ESS on a similar sytem with success? As a side note, the instructions in ESS are out of sync with the make file. Doing a "make install" fails due to the fact that there is no "info" target in the Makefile. It works "out of the box" on Debian GNU/Linux which comes which packages for every Emacs (I prefer Xemacs21), R and ESS. You might be able to convert the .deb packages into .rpm using the ''alien'' program. That being said, I also struckled with an ancient ESS (eg 5.0) prior to the package being made available (which is 5.1.*). John> Humboldt Universistat That is misspelled. This is actually a bit odd. It works OK for me with RH 6.2 (i.e. emacs 20.5.1) and ESS 5.1.9. The error you''re getting indicates that R thinks it is running in non-interactive mode, which is not what is supposed to happen in an emacs buffer, at least not on Linuxen. Do you have anything (e.g. in your .emacs) that could cause that? -- O__ ---- Peter Dalgaard Blegdamsvej 3 c/ /''_ --- Dept. of Biostatistics 2200 Cph. Could someone tell me how to do this please (set start John> args so R doesn''t terminate saying ''you need to specify --save, John> --nosave or --vanilla'')? Debian uses startup files for the additional Emacs packages which all the different emacs variants source from /etc/emacs/site-start.d/. However, the one for ESS contains only the path setting to get ESS itself from a directory site-lisp/ess, followed by (load "ess-site") So maybe I should send you my ess-site in private mail? Dear John, I use a very similar setup, R 1.0.0, ESS 5.0 and GNU Emacs 20.3.1 under SuSE Linux 6.2. Everything works perfectly. I would suggest using the rpms for ESS 5.1 for SuSE 6.3, located in the binaries section of CRAN. These rpms, along with those for R, are made by Albrecht Gebhardt. The url is http://lib.stat.cmu.edu/R/CRAN/bin/linux/suse/6.3/RPMS/i386/ess/ I found Albrecht''s rpms always work flawlessly, and I have been using them for a while. Unless you have strong feelings about where your files should be located, I suggest you use his rpms for R as well. Let me know how it goes. Sincerely, Faheem Mitha. Hi, I?ve had exactely the same problems with SuSE 6.3 and ESS. The Problem is, that SuSE changed the permisions of the ptty* from 6.2 to 6.3 and ESS (and some other programms like the debugger xxgdb) has got some problems with these changes. Look at: http://sdb.suse.de/sdb/de/html/ke_devpts-63.html for a solution. (Don?t know if this page is available in english too.) The easieset, but insecure way chmod 666 /dev/pty* Or set the s-bit for xemcas/emacs and other applications by chmod g+s $(which xemacs) chgrp tty $(which xemacs) or emacs. -.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.- r-help mailing list -- Read http://www.ci.tuwien.ac.at/~hornik/R/R-FAQ.html Send "info", "help", or "[un]subscribe" (in the "body", not the subject !)
