Yes, it will be in downtown San Francisco. To prevent random strangers
from showing up on our door, we are going to send the address out only
to attendees as we get closer to the event, but you can use the Sun
office in San Francisco for your planning purposes (the Sun office is
a stone''s throw from the location). The Sun office in San Francisco
is at 500 Howard St., San Francisco, 94105. This is within easy walking
distance from all downtown San Francisco hotels, which tend to be quite
inexpensive when major conventions are not in town -- and certainly much
cheaper than their counterparts in NYC, Boston, etc. Hotwire or
equivalent is recommended for those travelling on their own nickel.
Currently, we have 25 definites, 30 probables, and 10 possibles. So it
looks like we''re going to have on the order of 50 people, which I think
will be a perfect size. Probables: please go on to the dtrace.conf
page and update your status as soon as you know it. The dtrace.conf page
is here:
http://wikis.sun.com/display/DTrace/dtrace.conf
Please update it so we can start figuring out food and t-shirt orders! We
have a very generous sponsor in Forsythe Technologies (thank you Jarod!),
but we need to know how many folks we have to start making firmer orders.
Folks who haven''t signed up: it''s not too late, but please do
sign up
sooner rather than later to assure that we can clothe and feed you.

Well, we know that everyone who signed up is prepared to speak, and we
know roughly what their areas of interest are. So we know that everyone
has something to say -- and I think it''s fair to say that everyone
wants
to learn a thing or two -- so I think the next step is to figure out
the format (or formats) that will best facilitate this. Some interesting
ideas are here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unconference
In particular, the "open fishbowl" seems like an interesting approach:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fishbowl_%28conversation%29
It would also be valuable to get information from those who definitely want
to speak on a slightly extended topic. (I know that we in Fishworks for
example want to demo the DTrace-based work that we''ve been doing.)
Anyway,
we''ll get a page going on the wiki this weekend...
One somewhat mundane question: what do people want in terms of meals?
We''ll provide bagels in the morning, and a catered lunch. Do folks
want
us to cater dinner as well? (We''d be happy to.) On the one hand, we
don''t want to coop everyone up all day -- but on the other, having 50
folks hit the streets in search of chow might not be such a great idea.
