Sure. If you mounted the home on '~', probably is MATE that is trying to
create some special files (socket? pipe?) on the home, failing it.

I've tried in the past to debug it, but with no luck.

The share mounts, but the problem is with the upper and lower panels,
they keep crashing, blinking on and off and when they are on (only
fleetingly), they are unresponsive. It may be as you say, something
required isn't being created, but it only happens with MATE, Gnome etc
work as expected.
