It is a Saturday here and I've not digested the entire thread, but this
is the end of a backtrace and if Samba is crashing it is no supprise if
things are not working.

Please supply that full backtrace and debug that first.

That was the first mention of a crash, but it seems that the OP has been 
trying various idmap backends (and probably other things), so whilst 
Samba shouldn't crash, who knows if it isn't self inflicted. Yes, the 
crash should be investigated first.

What isn't helping is the sanitisation
We have been given DOMAIN/WORKGROUP 'AD'
The connecting user appears to be from the 'ADLOCAL' DOMAIN/WORKGROUP
The REALM is 'AD.UCHICAGO.EDU' but the log fragments show what appears 
to be the machines FQDN 'midway3-dm1.rcc.local'

Nothing matches.
