[LightDM] Moving mailing list from freedesktop.org infrastructure
Since LightDM has never hosted code on freedesktop.org we've been asked to move our information from there [1]. This was just the Wiki content (now in the README.md) and this mailing list. So we need a new home :) The easiest option I think is to move to using a Discourse forum, and the Ubuntu one [2] is an easy candidate for that. I would probably prefer a more neutral place as LightDM is not Ubuntu specific, but this is probably overthinking it. My experiences have shown that a modern forum works much better than a traditional mailing list while supporting those who want to interact with it via email. The content is more searchable for those with similar issues to find. What do people think? --Robert [1] https://github.com/CanonicalLtd/lightdm/issues/60 [2] https://discourse.ubuntu.com/ -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Google Groups are still a thing. Seems like it might be a good middle ground between a modern forum and a mailing list. -- Dustin Falgout Web Developer E-mail: dustin at falgout.us<mailto:dustin at falgout.us> ________________________________ From: LightDM <lightdm-bounces at lists.freedesktop.org> on behalf of Robert Ancell <robert.ancell at gmail.com> Sent: Monday, February 18, 2019 10:03 AM To: LightDM Mailing List Subject: [LightDM] Moving mailing list from freedesktop.org infrastructure Since LightDM has never hosted code on freedesktop.org<https://eur02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Ffreedesktop.org&data=02%7C01%7C%7C3c94c420502c4471188408d695bab603%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C636861026475978450&sdata=20yxpMfiC%2Bb%2F0pFaXQD5rwPCHUCF9lz1P8EvLzmLvuY%3D&reserved=0> we've been asked to move our information from there [1]. If both exist, I ignore the forum. And please, when you select a forum hoster, check that they support an RSS or Atom feed. That integrates much better into my routine that the need to check a forum every $TIMEPERIOD. Thank you for all the work you have put into LightDM! Lupe Chhristoph

There are several non-profit organizations providing mailing list servers, especially for free software projects. The free "Sympa" mailing-lists manager provide even more functionalities than Yahoo! or Google groups. These ones aren't really usable without an account, and anyway, since they've got your mail, a virtual account is created for you and of course they don't restrain data mining about everything you do online. -- Cordialement, Stephane Ascoet

[LightDM] Moving mailing list from freedesktop.org infrastructure
Hi all! I've finally got around to it and set up a location for LightDM discussion on the Ubuntu discourse forum [1]. I appreciate this will not be to everyone's liking, but it's the most practical solution. To participate in LightDM development you will need an account on GitHub and discourse.ubuntu.com which shouldn't be too hard for most people. I'll now start the process of closing this mailing list. --Robert [1] https://discourse.ubuntu.com/c/light-dm/107 On Tue, 19 Feb 2019 at 05:03, Robert Ancell <robert.ancell at gmail.com> wrote:> Since LightDM has never hosted code on freedesktop.org we've been asked > to move our information from there [1].
