APU2, legacy firmware 4.0.22, FreeBSD 12.0 hangs in boot

I hope to find some time this weekend to do a firmware upgrade / fiddle. Good to know the v4.8.0.5 release ought to work. Ill relay any findings that look might be useful to others.
