Like I mentioned before (at least I hope I did), the parent of a DP aux channel (drm_dp_aux.dev) is usually the connector that it lives on. So, I looked into adding a drm_dev field to struct drm_dp_aux and discovered that the assumption that a DP aux device always has a corresponding drm_device is not actually true! While aux devices seem to always eventually get used by a drm_device, on some SoCs the DP aux channel can be an entirely separate platform device than the actual DRM device. One example of this I've found so far is with Tegra, where the DP aux channel has it's very own platform device (tegra_dpaux_driver in drivers/gpu/drm/tegra/dpaux.c) and is initially registered with userspace before it's even been associated with the DRM device that ends up using it (see tegra_dpaux_probe() in drivers/gpu/drm/tegra/dpaux.c). The good news here is that -technically- according to the drm_dp_aux_register() documentation, we actually recommend against doing this: /** ? * This should only be called when the underlying &struct drm_connector is * initialiazed already. Therefore the best place to call this is from ? */ (also, hey a typo, guess we should fix that) Anyway-we can -probably- use drm_dbg_* here, but we'll definitely need to fix tegra and possibly others first in order to ensure that the AUX channels don't have any possibility of being used until they've been associated with their corresponding DRM devices. I'm fine with doing the work for this, but this does mean we'll definitely need to pull in more reviews from the owners of these drivers in order to move forward. TBH I kind of suspected we'd find something like this, hence why I suggested this be done as a separate patch series. I'll go through and fix all the drivers I can find in the mean time so we can store a backpointer to drm_device in drm_dp_aux and use drm_dbg_* in the DRM helpers, but if you folks are OK with it I think it wouldn't be a bad idea to just address this with a followup series instead and use the old DRM_DEBUG_* macros in the mean time.> > > +???????????????????????return ret < 0 ? ret : -EIO; > > +???????????????} > > + > > +???????????????if (bl->lsb_reg_used) > > +???????????????????????return (buf[0] << 8) | buf[1]; > > +???????????????else > > +???????????????????????return buf[0]; > > +???????} > > + > > +???????/* > > +??????? * If we're not in DPCD control mode yet, the programmed brightness > > value is meaningless and > > +??????? * the driver should assume max brightness > > +??????? */ > > +???????return bl->max; > > +} > > + > > +/** > > + * drm_edp_backlight_init() - Probe a display panel's TCON using the > > standard VESA eDP backlight > > + * interface. > > + * @aux: The DP aux device to use for probing > > + * @bl: The &drm_edp_backlight_info struct to fill out with information on > > the backlight > > + * @driver_pwm_freq_hz: Optional PWM frequency from the driver in hz > > + * @edp_dpcd: A cached copy of the eDP DPCD > > + * @current_level: Where to store the probed brightness level > > + * @current_mode: Where to store the currently set backlight control mode > > + * > > + * Initializes a &drm_edp_backlight_info struct by probing @aux for it's > > backlight capabilities, > > + * along with also probing the current and maximum supported brightness > > levels. > > + * > > + * If @driver_pwm_freq_hz is non-zero, this will be used as the backlight > > frequency.
