subsetting matrix according to columns with character index
Hi, I have a long matrix of the following form which I would like to subset according to the third column: [x y z]: a1 c1 1 a1 c1 2 a2 c1 1 a1 c2 1 a1 c2 2 . . . The first two columns a characters ai and cj. I would like to keep all the rows where there are two entries for z, 1 and 2. That is, I want: a1 c1 1 a1 c1 2 a1 c2 1 a1 c2 2 . . . I try to use something like

Ruuid missing Gtk glib.dylib
Hi, I get an error indicating a missing library from the package 'Ruuid'. I suppose this means I should install RGtk. I just thought I'd document the error. Maybe a dependency entry is missing? Cannot re-start R after bus error
Hi, I ran a program that was exhausting the (unix) server's available memory. I got a bus error and then chose to save and quit workspace (option 4). That may not have been a smart idea - when I try to use R now, I get the error message: Error in load(name, envir = .GlobalEnv) : ReadItem: unknown type 0, perhaps written by later version of R Fatal error: unable to restore saved data in

Polar coordinate
Greetings to you all. I have two datasets - Time and magnitude. For a particular location, the magnitude of the parameter varies with time. I wish to obtain a polar coordinate distribution of time (0-24h) and magnitudes so as to visualize how magnitude varies with different times of the day (e.g., morning, midnight hours). I have searched for "polar coordinates in R" but could not get

New unique name
In some languages there is a function gensym() which returns a new unique name (in the current environment). This is quite helpful when one has to do temporary assignments. I could not find such a function in R. FFT, frequs, magnitudes, phases
Hi, I'm in dire need of a fast fourier transformation for me stupid biologist, i.e. I have a heartbeat signal and would like to decompose it into pure sin waves, getting three vectors, one containing the frequencies of the sin waves, one the magnitudes and one the phases (that's what I get from my data acquisition software's FFT function). I'd be very much obliged, if someone

typsize and fscale arguments to nlm
Dear R list members, I have a question about the proper use of the typsize and fscale arguments to nlm. I use nlm in my sem package to fit general structural-equation models, which entails maximizing a multinormal likelihood with respect to parameters that represent regression coefficients and covariances of variables. The magnitudes of these parameters can be very different. The

How do I call a masked function in a package without a namespace?
Hello, I work with two packages sna and graph from CRAN resp. Bioconductor. Both packages have a function called "degree". Therefore one of the functions is masked by the other and which one gets called depends on the order of loading. The problem is that both package do not have a namespace, therefore calling the masked function with "package::degree" does not work.

ADVICE: Generating unique identifiers for later DB insertion
All, I have an ActiveRecord object that I need to be able to uniquely identify _before_ I actually save the object (I may not end up saving the object based on conditions). This is because I want to use the ID in another context (a file name in the filesystem). Depending on conditions, I may or may not need to do a lot of stuff between the time that I generate the object ID and actually

xyplot problem
Hi all, I am trying to produce some panels with dots in an X/Y plane where the diameter of the dots indicates a Z value (like e.g. earthquake maps where dot sizes indicate magnitudes and X/Y the location). This works fine with xyplot, e.g.: xyplot(1:3~1:3,cex=1:3,pch=16) However, when I do this with a panel variable, e.g.: x<-rep(1:3,5) y <- rep(1:3,5) sz <- rep(1:5,each=3) grp

S4 classes and C
Is there any good source of information on how S4 classes (and methods) work from C? E.g., for reading how to read a slot value how to invoke a method how to test if you have an s4 object For writing, how to make a new instance of an S4 object. I've found scattered hints in the archive, including a link to a talk on this subject "I am using C code to create an S4 object based on

princomp and eigen
Hi. I was comparing the components from princomp's loadings and the eigen given the same input. I found that the sign of componenets (+/-) are opposite between the two components (from princmop and eigen) but the magnitudes are identical. Why? Thanks! [[alternative HTML version deleted]]

accesing slots of S4 class in C code
I am trying to use a custom S4 object in my C code and I cannot get the access to its slots working. The following is a toy example, but even this crashes. problem with postscript output of R-devel on Windows
I have developed a problem with the postscript output of plot on Windows. My code still works properly with R 2.3 but, with R 2.4, the white text on red background does not show up. It does, however, show up when output is sent to the screen. Below is my code and sessionInfo. Setting the language of Rs error messages
Hi, My R has been installed on a Ubuntu linux computer in Germany. The error messages I get are in German, for example: In min(magnitudes) : kein nicht-fehlendes Argument f?r min; gebe Inf zur?ck I would like those to be displayed in English, for pasting them into google. I tried searching for "R language", which brings me a ton of results for.. well, the R language :) "R german
