Casualty Actuarial Society request for proposals for R Workshop
I'm a property-casualty actuary, use R in at my job, and lurk on the
list. In conjunction with one of its meetings, the Casualty Actuarial
Society (I'm a member) is looking for proposals from people to teach a
workshop in R and I thought members of the list might be interested.
I've pasted the information below.
My apologies if this posting violates list rules.
Thanks.

Multivariate response methods question
Hi Everyone,
I have some data that predicts both a nominal and ordinal response
variable. I was wondering what packages in R would help me analyze the
data?
I was also curious if anyone could recomend me some textbooks that
would help with the analysis of such data? I have the 5th edition of
"Applied Multivariate Statistical Analysis" by Richard A. Johnson and

Recommended textbooks for R?
Hi everyone!
I've recently begun to learn R for my job as the IT department suffers
from lack of funding for new software. I was talking to the guy in
charge of Requisitions and have found out the budget for books is in
great shape.
So, I'm curious what books people know of that have R examples and are
good for:
1.) Uni and Multivariate Time Series Analysis/Forecasting
2.) GLMs (at

[OT]Example Data for Non-statisticians
(Sorry for the slightly off topic post)
I'm giving a talk (on data mining) to some non-statisticians (who're
all postgrad students, but a mixture of Science and Commerce majors).
My intention is to show them the importance of statistics when doing
data mining. What I'm thinking of doing is using, hopefully, two
datasets. One from scientific area and another that is

Introducing R to statisticians
Dear all,
I will present R language and R software environment to the Statistical Society of Serbia.
As I will doing it to professional statisticians it seems unneccesary to
me to present them how R language works in details. I am more
interested to present them with the latest facts regarding R (approximately number of users, number of add-on packages etc.) and in general why they should start

question on gps.prof in ismev
Dear all,
I'm trying to produce a log-likelihood profile for a GPD estimate with
the ismev package. When following the examples, everything is working
fine, i.e. I get a nice parabolic log-likelihood curve. When using my
own data (intensity of hurricanes at landfall), the log-likelihood curve
looks like a step function. Am I doing something wrong here? Is my data
not suited for the GPD fit?

A graphic art piece I created that only statisticians would understand and the use of R in art
This isn't the typical r-help post, but I think people here will appreciate
it. The current Shirt.Woot (http://shirt.woot.com) derby prompt is fake band
names, so I chose the name "The Probable Error of a Mean." And I made my
submission with R. Here it is:

R-demo for non-statisticians/mathematicians
Hi all. A friend of mine asked me to assist with an R presentation to the
Penn State LUG in a few weeks. The audience will be predominately
computer scientists and/or engineers (I suspect) and they are just looking
for presentations of good open source software and my friend volunteered
R. We are both relatively new to R, so I thought it would be best to ask
the list for your opinion....what do

Random number generation
Hi Everyone,
I did a quick search of the list and it looks like this may not have
been asked before... I'm trying to generate a matrix of random numbers
between 0 and 1, with 6 columns, 10000 rows. About all I know is that
runif(1) gives me the random number I'm looking for.
Any help would be great!
thanks,
