howto convert matrix of numeric values to Date class?
Hi:
I have a matrix, named "mat," of numeric values that are in days since
Jan 1, 1960.
I want to convert them Date class values so that I can do things like
seq( value , len=10, by="1 week")
where "value" is any of the matrix elements.
How do I do this?
Please reply to: philipsmith at alumni.albany.edu
Thanks!

computing distance in miles or km between 2 street addresses
Hi R-ers:
I need to compute the distance between 2 street addresses in either km
or miles. I do not care if the distance is a "shortest driving route" or
if it is "as the crow flies."
Does anybody know how to do this? Can it be done in R? I have thousands
of addresses, so I think that Mapquest is out of the question!

dt2 - dt1.
But, I want the answer in months between those 2 dates.
Can you advise me?

In creating a Windows binary package (zip), how do I make the installation configurable
I would like to create a binary package for Windows which when
installed will give the user an option of whether to install
one version or another.
Here is the problem, I have a package 'FAME' that can run
in two different modes on Windows. An old mode that uses
R to connect to a remote linux machine and a new way that
uses a locally installed database.
I would allow this decision to be

loadNamespace and useDynLib
I am considering a package with a namespace (Rgraphviz from Bioc). I
essentially want to have some error handling for loading the dll,
something like wrapping it into tryCatch or similar (reason: see
below). Right now I am loading the dynamic libraries by useDynLib in
my NAMESPACE file. When I look at the code from loadNamespace, I have
the impression that what I want is impossible

computing distance in miles or km between 2 street
Phil,
If you have only a list of addresses and nothing else - i have to recognize i am "lost". But if you have more info you can use a GIS software and it will calculate your distance automatically for all your addresses. To have your distance in miles or Km you need to have a projection in your data which will establish your units.
The very basic principle is that for each address

help me
Hello,
I am a student and I working with R. I want to ask you how to solve
this integral which is shown in image attach with this letter. And how
to draw this function z = 4 ? x2 ? y2 , width intervals x = ?1, y =

Plotting quarterly time series
Using Achim's d this also works to generate z where FUN is a function used
to transform the index column and format is also passed to FUN.
z <- read.zoo(d, index = "time", FUN = as.yearqtr, format = "Q%q %Y")

Rcmd install on Vista
Has anyone successfully used Rcmd install or Rcmd check on
Windows Vista? I have been successfully been running R itself,
just not Rcmd install and Rcmd check.
Rcmd check fails, the Ryacas.Rcheck it creates is
read-only, I don't have permission to delete it and I have
to reset the permissions on it just to delete it.
With Rcmd install I am getting the following which looks like I

Ryacas
I'm tinkering around in Ryacas trying to find an easy way to get the
first and second partial derivatives of mu and sigma from a normal
distribution (actually a bitterly ugly likelihood but this example works
for now).
I've done all of the work in Mathematica, but I then need to manually
write R code whereas I think Ryacas will give me the expression such
that I can export for Tex and

loading & using Ryacas
I'm having trouble loading Ryacas. I've downloaded and extracted Ryacas
0.2-9 (also tried Ryacas ) and yacas 1.0.63, have the latest version of R
and have tried the following (this works for installing other packages):
install.packages("Ryacas")
library(Ryacas)
install.packages("yacas")
library(yacas)
and get this:
