Passing R connection as argument to a shell command on Windows
Hello, is there a way to pass a connection to a file in a zipped archive as
argument (instead of a file name of unzipped file) to shell command "cut". In
general, is it possible to pipe output of a R function to a shell command? How?
I want to do something like:
z = unz("zipArchive.zip", "fileASCII.ASC")
# open connection
open(z)
# cut lines of the ASCII file in

rcmd and directories (cwd; tmpdir) (PR#3429)
Hi,
rcmd requires a temporary directory identified by the value of the
environment variable "TMPDIR". Unfortunately, if the directory name has a
space in it, rcmd errors out. For example, the standard temporary file
"TMP" for xp is like:
c:\documents and settings\r_user\local settings\temp
If TMPDIR is defined via the Windows/XP "standard" way, i.e.,

SAMBA digest 1703
I'm not a perl guru, and this is off the top of my head, but did you try
something like this:
#!/bin/perl
open(PIPE, "|smbpasswd")
print PIPE "$oldpassword\n"
print PIPE "$newpassword\n"
print PIPE "$newpassword\n"
close PIPE

Compression of largish expression array files in the DAAGbio/inst/doc directory?
The inst/doc directory of the DAAG package has 6 files coral551.spot, ... that
are around 0.85 MB each. It would be useful to be able to zip then, but that
as matters stand interferes with the use of the Sweave file that uses them to
demonstrate input of expression array data that is in the "spot" format. They
do not automatically get unzipped when required. I have checked that

IBM BladeCenter HS20 blades
Greetings,
We have purchased an IBM BladeCenter and I am in the process of testing
Linux installation on these things (boot off SAN i.e. qla2300 driver,
not using internal drives). My distro of choice is Debian, however,
since I'm really not interested in trying to hand compile all the
drivers, I decided to try CentOS (which I'm so far very impressed with).
On boot, as with the

FIPS 140-2 compliance
I''ve just posted a feature request
<http://projects.puppetlabs.com/issues/8120> relating to FIPS 140-2
compliance. I''m pointing to it here on the mailing list because I listed
there five places where Puppet (nay, Ruby!) crashed while I was testing
a deployment using FIPS mode on all hosts. It crashed because it tried
to use MD5, and OpenSSL in FIPS mode doesn''t let

about kidpack package
* I have both R and Biobase and also download kidpack_1.1.1.tar.gz.
After I unzip the gz file, I got the folders and files. Then i got
lost: how to install the package of kidpack(because there is no zipped file
after I uninstall kidpack_1.1.1.tar.gz)? If I choose install from local
zipped file, kidpack_1.1.1.tar.gz does not show on the selection list.
Thanks a lot! *

Making a Package
Hello.
I have what I know to be a simple question, but never having done anything like this it is
pretty tough.
I'm trying to write an R package. I have a collection of functions that I loaded into R and
then used package.skeleton(). After editing everything in the resulting folder, call it
NewPackage, I tried to follow along with some instructions I found for Windows users.
I installed

Zipping Rdata Files
Saving Rdata files in a zip archive form can in some cases save a
considerable amount of disk space. R has the zip.file.extract function to
extract files from zip archives, but appears not to have any corresponding
function to save in zipped form. (At least I have not been able to find
anything in the help files or through searching the mail archives.) The
system function can be used to call gzip

Developing custom type/providers for multiple OS
Hello all,
I am developing a few custom providers for some features that I need into
my system (such as dealing with different zipped files or generating some
JSON data based on OS files) and I have hit into a question about "how to
do this for multiple OS?"
Lets focus into the zipped file provider that should provide a common
method to pack or unpack zipped files (tar, tar.gz,

Local library on Windoze.
I'm mystified by a Windoze ``phenomenon'' which has just bitten me.
I have a laptop which boots either Windoze or Linux; I (sad to say)
need the Windoze OS for teaching purposes. I have R 1.9.1 installed
on the laptop in the Windoze OS.
Just now I decided to install, under the Windoze version of R,
a library (``Misc'') of some local functions that I have collected

Extracting from zip, removing certain file extensions
Hi there,
I'm running R on windows 7 with Rstudio. Everyday I receive a zip file
where a bunch of half-hourly files are zipped together.
I then use
xx=unzip(ind)
to get xx, which consists of :

Installation
I seem to have some problems installing the latest R-Windows.
How do you know when the installer has completed its actions. On each
occasion I tried to install, the installer has just stopped, but with
no message saying "install complete" or something similar.
Although, I have R installed and some it seems to work The graphics
demo doesn't do anything, though other demos seem
