Mathematica and R
What are some effective ways to leverage the strengths of R and Mathematica for the analysis of a single data set? More specifically, are there any functions that can assist with any of the following? 1. Calling an R function from Mathematica. 2. Calling a Mathematica function from R. 3. Using XML or another reliable data format to pass vectors, matrices, and/or lists from one environment to

Doing Mathematica Quantile[] function in R
Hi all, I am an R newbie trying to do some calculations I do in Mathematica in R on a GNU/Linux system. The main thing I am interested in doing is taking a 0.999 quantile on a data set in a file who's data is normally distributed, say foo.csv. e.g in Mathematica if I have something like this : a=Import["foo.csv"] b=Transpose[a][[1]] Quantile[b,0.999] In R I can load all the data

Is there a facility in R similar to MatLab "syms" that allows using unevaluated numeric symbols in matrices?
Hi, I'm trying to use R to get eigenvalues and eigenvectors of a matrix whose elements are of the form (2 * lambda), -(lambda + mu), etc. I'd like R to treat this matrix as a numeric matrix without treating lambda and mu as variable names but rather as some sort of atomic quantities (and hence give eigenvectors in terms of mu and/or lambda). MatLab and Mathematica both do this,

mathematica -> r (gamma function + integration)
Dear R-list, I try to transform a mathematica script to R. #######relevant part of the Mathematica script (* p_sv *) dd = NN (DsD - DD^2); lownum = NN (L-DD)^2; upnum = NN (H-DD)^2; low = lownum/(2s^2); up = upnum/(2s^2); psv = NIntegrate[1/(s^NN) Exp[-dd/(2s^2)] (Gamma[1/2,0,up] + Gamma[1/2,0,low]),{s,sL,sH}, MinRecursion->3]; PSV = psv/Sqrt[2NN]; Print["------------- Results

Mathematica now working with Nvidia GPUs --> any plan for R?
Dear All, I just read an announcement saying that Mathematica is launching a version working with Nvidia GPUs. It is claimed that it'd make it ~10-100x faster! http://www.physorg.com/news146247669.html I was wondering if you are aware of any development going into this direction with R? Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Best wishes, Emmanuel

Mathematica Notebook Frontend
Hi, I need some help getting the Frontend to work - MathKernel.exe is working but when I try wine Mathematica.exe I get a lot of error messages - I'm using Mathematica Version 4.0 and wine20010824. At the end of the post there is the complete message I get from wine. Thanx a lot CFU wine Mathematica.exe For language 'german' several language ids were found: de_DE - 0407; de_CH

Compiling R in C / C++
I am interested in being able to use R in my own libraries, written in C++. I have seen that in the past several people have asked about this possibility. In the book Programming in S it is stated that it is possible to call R functions from a C++ called from R. Also, it seems it is possible to do something with the R D-COM port, but at least for somebody with my limited capabilities (and time)

Convert Mathematica code into R
Dear all, I have a reasonably short piece of code written in Mathematica 5.2 which I would like to convert to R. The problem is that I'm not familiar with Mathematica. I would, however, also be OK with some interface that allows me to run Mathematica from within R and use the output of the Mathematica for further analysis within R. Any advice on how to conveniently convert the code or on how

Symbolic Maximum Likelihood in R
Dear List: Is any one aware of a package that would extend the D() function and allow for one to maximize a likelihood function symbolically? Something akin to Solve[x==0, parameter] function in Mathematica? Clearly R has the capacity to _compute_ MLEs given a set of data. But, I'm looking for a package that would allow for me to define the likelihood function, find the 1st order partial

Adobe products under Linux?
Also sent to Codeweavers - [what is this list's insights?] I have a 32 GB, dual quad-core desktop machine and was considering 32-bit Windows XP w/SP2, but discovered it only supports up to 4 GB RAM, so that idea is shot. Next in line is 64-bit CentOS 5. The major need for Windows would be very active use of Adobe Acrobat 8, Photoshop CS3, and Illustrator CS3. There may also be the need

RPM Build Question
Hi People, I have just started building my own RPMS on both Fedora and CentOS and generally things have gone well. Currently I am trying to create RPMS for some commercial software that we have purchased. Step 1 was install the software using its JAVA Based installer ensuring that all files were installed into a particular directory in /usr/local. Step 2 was create a tar file of the

Interesting remarks about R back in 1999
Hi, this is not an R-help post, but I found this extract below that was written by a leading mathematician back in 1999 when he was talking about statistics and computing. I found it interesting to share and I ask your opinion do you think this still holds today or things have changed? Thanks. ?...we would also like to mention that in our opinion Mathematica provides an excellent and indeed

integration problem with gamma function
