perception of graphical data
Hello, I apologize that this is off-topic. I am seeking information on perception of graphical data, in an effort to improve the plots I produce. Would anyone point me to literature reviews in this area? (Or keywords to try on google?) Is this located somewhere near cognitive science, psychology, human factors research? For example, some specific questions I have are: I recall as a child

transition matrices
I am working with transition matrices of sequences of animal behaviours. What I would like to do is parse the original matrices, adjusting row/column order so that the matrix has its main values in blocks surrounding the diagonal. This would cause behaviours involved in functional groupings (e.g. grooming, resting, foraging etc) to appear as blocks. This can be done manually by applying

Reprint of "The Official Samba-3 HOWTO and Reference Guide"
Hi All, I understand people have been frustrated trying to find copies of "The Official Samba-3 HOWTO and Reference Guide" edited by John Terpstra and Jelmer Vernooij. I apologize. Demand has been even greater than we anticipated and we immediately ran out of stock on the first printing. As bad luck would have it, the busy holiday printing season and a glitch at the printer delayed the

Plotting slowly
Some older members of this list will remember the strange pleasure of seeing a pattern slowly emerge as points were laboriously added to a scatterplot on graph paper. A colleague (Harold Henderson, in fact) recently pointed out to me that there is some quite interesting structure in the abrasion loss data set of O. L. Davies (reprinted in the book by Hand et al) if you consider the order of the

S Programming Book at Amazon.com
As of a moment ago (9 a.m., Monday, Jan. 8, 2001), the S Programming book by Venables and Ripley was once again selling for 17.98 American dollars at Amazon.com. Alas, I notice that "Mixed Effects Models in S and S-Plus" by Pinheiro and Bates now lists at Amazon for 97.25 American dollars, as opposed to about $70 a little while ago.

Re: RE pdb_ldap.c, ldapsam_add_sam_account, existing poxisaccount
St?phane, The book "Samba-3 by Example" is being reprinted very soon. Up to date builds of the PDF are available on the Samba web site daily. This document can be downloaded from: http://www.samba.org/samba/docs/Samba-Guide.pdf In chapter 5 I have fully documented how Samba-3 can be deployed with LDAP and using the smbldap-tools. It works perfectly for me and in many sites that

Mates, The saga continues, but THANK GOD 'make revert' WORKS. Here is my problem. I am trying to compile 3.0.7 from source and install it on my Mandrake 7.2 box. The gcc compiler is 2.95.3. Here is what I have done: [stop samba] # ./configure --prefix=/usr --with-smbmount # make # make install # /etc/rc.d/init.d/smb start Here is what I get: [root@Nemesis david]# tail

can't open files off of samba shared drive on w2k/xp workstations
Hi, I have somewhat successfully got Samba working where as users can map the drives to their win2k/xp workstations and wrote to the folders they are given permissions to. They can write to the folder, delete folders, write files, delete files, view the file listing, however, they can't open files. For instance, if there is a word document, they can't just double click on the share and

Samba 3.0.25c Going Nuts on our Network???
POSTED TO THE LIST W/O ATTACHMENTS -------- Jerry, I am sending this to you directly because it contains the tcpdump information in addition to the samba logs just in case there is sensitive information contained in the files. What is happening is that samba 3.0.25c, after first running smoothly, is becoming very "chatty" across our LAN. I don't know why, but with no files or

mdk 7.2, Upgrade 2.0.9 to 3.0.7, Help with ./configure
Mates, In following chapter 35 "How to Compile Samba" I have looked at ./configure --help and I have a few questions. Originally I installed 2.0.9 via RPM, and of course there are no longer RPMs for mdk 7.2. On 7.2, smbd and nmbd are installed in /usr/sbin. The docs are in /usr/share/doc/samba-2.0.9. I don't know where the rest of the pieces of the puzzle were scattered by

'add/change/delete share command'(s) in smb.conf
Hello. I need to allow one of my users to add & delete shares on my Samba server through the 'server manager' applet on his client . This same user also writes some files to the same Samba server. I don't want the files that he writes to be owned/written by 'root' . The way I understand the 'add share command' currently, this is not possible. Am I missing
