ActiveRecord, computed values, and associations
Is there some sort of good pattern for dealing with computed values with Rails/ActiveRecord? A simple example: 3 tables, classes, students, and student_class_records (habtm style relation but contains a good deal of additional state so is modeled explicitly) Something like select the 10 classes with the most students. Easy enough in SQL. So I''m using a lot of find_by_sql and

Firefox and IE performance with Rails App
In my rails application, certain computers were having huge problems. There were certain pages that were exceptionally slow, even to the point of timing out. Other computers did not have a problem. I finally found that Firefox was the difference. When using Firefox on those computers it works fine. The slow pages were typically posting a form with a couple hundred fields. This behavior was

Understanding observe_form...
Hi all, I''m trying to understand the workings of the observe_form function. In my application I have a search form with a number of parameters, and I want to have a live search counter on screen, so as the user chooses different parameters, she can see a live count of how many search results match. What I''m not clear on is how to use the "with" option, and what

observe_form, observe_field, dynamic forms help
I made a pretty lengthy post on what I''m doing here: http://groups.google.com/group/rubyonrails-talk/browse_thread/thread/89a2b8e54a874dd9 Short version: I have a radio_button group of two. If one is clicked another pair of radio buttons is added, if the other is clicked it is removed. observe_form does not work for elements added after initial page load. observe_field does not work

Warnings printed to console causes error if console closed on Linux
I had a statement that was generating a warning about parenthesise argument for future version. The interesting thing was it would crash the page with an input/output error on my production linux server, but worked fine in webbrick/windows. I finally tracked it down to it crashed when trying to print the warning to the console. If I kept the terminal open that I started the server on it would

has_many :through with has_many/has_many join models
It seems that using a join model that joins with two has_many''s will fail to generate proper SQL class StudentSemesterRecord < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :semester has_many :discipline_records, :through => :semester end class Semester < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :student_semester_records has_many :discipline_records end class DisciplineRecord <

observe_form without ajax?
This betrays my lack of javascript knowledge, but is it possible to watch a whole form for changes and activate some javascript when those changes occur without any remote request? That is, I want to do exactly what observe_form does, but without the ajax call actually happening. I realize I could use the form_tag :onchange parameter, but that seems to be incapable of doing things like

Using RJS templates with observe_form
Hi there, I''ve been checking out RJS templates, and have been trying to use them with the observe_form helper. However, the form values are no longer being passed in the params (as soon as I point the action to the non-rjs and add the ''update'' clause everything is working again). Is this expected? Cheers, Dave -------------- next part -------------- An

Observe_form and ssl on IE
Can anyone help with some strange error messages I''m getting on IE when using observe_form. I''ve written some code to observe a set of radio buttons and it all works fine in Firefox but when using IE about 20% of the calls return a request.status of 12152, ERROR_HTTP_INVALID_SERVER_RESPONSE (and the occasional 12030, ERROR_INTERNET_CONNECTION_ABORTED). It only happens on SSL

That works fine, except that when I change the user I want to go back to the view that originated the request and not to the default list (list_1). Can anyone help me? PROPOSAL: Validations as Mixin
It seems to me that Validations are quite useful for many objects, even ones having nothing to do with ActiveRecord. Common examples are Contact Us forms, multi-step forms, web service paramater validations, etc. I took a look at the source for Validations, and it seems that it is very independent from ActiveRecord. I caught only three depenedencies: 1. validates_numericy --> depends on

Why you MUST use SCGI for Rails development
Hello happy Railers, I used to develop with a local out-of-the-box Apache and load times were pretty slow (like a few seconds each page). "Well, it''s the price to pay for no compile / cache / etc..." I thought. Nonsense. Yesterday I installed SCGI, and now I''ve got the best of both worlds: rails development env uses my very latest modifications, while SCGI ensures I

rjb: Java classes in Rails
Hi, For those who might not be aware, rjb is a killer gem for using java classes inside your rails app (or any ruby code). Check it out at: http://rubyforge.org/projects/rjb/ I was able to successfully use it in one of my apps that required some code that is only available in java. And it''s much nicer than having to compile a java app, then shell out using backticks, get back the return
