heavy graphs
Dear R community, I am creating large graphs with hundreds of thousands of datapoints. My usual way for output was pdf, but now I am getting file sizes of >30Mb that do not open well (or at all) in Adobe. Is there a way to reduce the resolution or get rid of overlaying datapoints? Any other idea is also warmly welcome! Thank you and wishing you a good day! Georg. **********************

diffusing GIS data in maps
Hi- I am trying to find a way to diffuse GIS data on a European map. I have a dataset consisting of particular locations scattered across Europe, along with magnitude and value information. I can plot these as discrete points with something like the following: "geocode" is a dataframe with four columns: LAT; LONG; MAGNITUDE;VALUE. library(maps) library(mapdata)

Datapoints underneath datapoints Problem
Hi there. I have the following graph: http://www.nabble.com/file/p10928148/map.jpg However, some datapoints occur at the same place as other datapoints and are so layered on top of each other. I would like to know if there is any possible way in which I could view those datapoints that are layered on top of each other ...maybe by rotating using latitude to show the datapoints underneath (but

plot circular histogram
In conducting studies of animal orientation and displacement, I need to produce circular histograms of angles (bearings in radians 0-2pi) where the centre of the circle indicates very few observations for a given bin of angles and outwardly concentric circles indicate greater frequencies of observations for a given bin of angles. I'd like not to have to write the function myself but I

running many different regressions
Dear R community, I have a dataframe with say 100 different variables. I wish to regress variable 1 separately on every other variable (2-100) in a linear regression using lm. There must be an easy way to do this without loops, but I have difficulties figuring this out... Can you please help? Thank you and best regards, Georg. ***************************************** Georg Ehret Johns Hopkins

histogram in the background?
I intend to draw a plot of y against x. In the background of this graph I wish to creat a histogram of the horizontal variable x. Does any expert know how to produce such a plot? [[alternative HTML version deleted]]

How to translate the 2D-density matrix (the output of bkde2D function) into matrix of datapoints' amounts?
It is known that function bkde2D (package "KernSmooth") returns a matrix of density estimates over the mesh induced by x1 and x2. In Details it is written that "... heights of the kernel, scaled by the bandwidths, at each datapoint are summed. This sum, after a normalization, is the corresponding fhat value in the output". There are several questions: 1) How to calculate

Help with customizing a histogram figure
Hi all, Please consider the following code: require(plotrix) l <- list(rnorm(50),rnorm(50,sd=2),rnorm(50,mean=3)) multhist(l) I have two things I need help with: (1) In the output, there are empty spaces on the x-axis. How would I eliminate these spaces? I want a nice, smooth, empty-spaceless x-axis. (2) How could I add tracing lines to each histogram? I am undoubtedly using the wrong

density and jpeg
Dear R community, I am using densityplot (lattice package) for a large dataset and wish to print it to a jpeg (the pdf is huge). R crashes consistently. Am I doing it wrong or is densityplot incompatible with jpeg? I work on a Mac, R 2.7.0. > require(lattice) > jpeg("test.jpeg") > d[1:10] [1] 0.700218 0.700175 0.700357 0.700847 0.698286 0.701520 0.698158 0.699300 0.698819

two graphs
Dear R community, I am plotting a histogram and would wish to display another variable of the same dataset in a very narrow heatmap just below the x-axis. Never mind the specifics of my task: How can I draw a second graph/image just below a first graph/image? Thank you! number of effective tests
Dear R community, I am using 6 variables to test for an effect (by linear regression). These 6 variables are strongly correlated among each other and I would like to find out the number of independent test that I perform in this calcuation. For this I calculated a matrix of correlation coefficients between the variables (see below). But to find the rank of the table in R is not the right

hclust leaf color
Hello everyone, I wanted to know if it was possible to change the color of certain leaves in a hclust object in order to make my graph more readable. I know I can color certain groups but I would like to enter a vector telling the plot function which leaves to color in which color. Thanks in advance, William.

using a variable in a subset of a dataframe
Dear R community, I am using a dataset and would like to define new variables using a R variable: e.g. for (i in 1:10){ dataset$i<-something } But this is not the right way, I get only one variable in "dataset"... How can I change this? Thank you! Georg. ************************ Georg Ehret Johns Hopkins Baltimore, MD [[alternative HTML version deleted]]

Ordering several histograms
Hallo everyone, I want to evaluate the change of the distribution for several size classes. How can i order these separate histograms with the same y-axis along a common x-axis according to their size classes. It would like it to look a bit like this (http://addictedtor.free.fr/graphiques/RGraphGallery.php?graph=109) without the quantile regression. I can produce the separate histograms, but have

Combined plot: Scatter + density plot
Hi, in order to save space for a publication, it would be nice to have a combined scatter and density plot similar to what is shows on http://addictedtor.free.fr/graphiques/RGraphGallery.php?graph=78 I wonder if anybody perhaps has already developed code for this and is willing to share. This is the reproducible code for the histogram version obtained from the site: def.par <-
