Specify options with habtm
Hi all
I have the following models:
class member
has_and_belongs_to_many :disc_jockeys
end
class disc_jockey
has_and_belongs_to_many :members
end
The relation table is called disc_jockeys_members and has the following
fields:
disc_jockeys_members(disc_jockey_id, member_id, status)
So far, the field status can have values like valid, invalid, locked
etc., but it is not regarded yet by

Habtm: I can create the same relation more than 1x!
Hi all
I have a DiscJockey and a Member model, each of them reference each
other using habtm.
josh $ script/server
>> m=Member.find 1
>> dj=DiscJockey.find 1
>> m.disc_jockeys << dj
>> m.disc_jockeys << dj
>> m.disc_jockeys << dj
Now I have 3 relations in the DB! Is this normal? Shouldn''t there an
error occur, that I can only add the

marshaling ActiveRecord objects: how to unload associations?
I''m marshaling ActiveRecord objects, and I want them to be as small as
possible. How can I unload everything that can be reloaded from the
database?
If they''re marshaled before any of the associations are referenced
then the referenced objects aren''t dumped. But if the association has
been loaded, how can I unload it? AssociationProxy.reset doesn''t seem
to do

How to check if a parent has children?
What is the new way to check if a parent has child items? In rails
1.2.6 I did this:
if @client.has_line_items?
Client being the parent and line_items the children.
Now that I have upgraded to rails 2.0.1 (on my way to current :-) ) I
am getting this message:
undefined method `has_line_items?'' for #<Client:0x7f3b093b01a0>
How should I format the query now?

Polymorphic associations and single table inheritance
Running into an interesting problem that at first glance appears to be a
bug in the AR association code. However, it''s explicitly coded this way
so I''m not so sure.
I have some code like this:
class Address < ActiveRecord::Base
belongs_to :addressable, :polymorphic => true
end
class Person < ActiveRecord::Base
has_many :addresses, :as => :addressable,

@article.article_groups.delete_if... Dosn't work!
If I try:
@article.article_groups.delete_if {|x|
x.group_id == x.group_id
}
It does nothing.
If I try:
articletmp.article_groups.each{ |x|
@article.article_groups.delete(y)
}
It deletes some of the groups.
@article.article_groups.clear
works.
Why dosn''t the to first examples work as expected??
Do I have to put groups I don''t want to

Scope and specing models
Hello all, I''m currently having an issue with some specs, specifically scope
issues (probably more of a scope issue than a spec issue at this point)...
Here''s the error:
ActiveRecord::AssociationTypeMismatch in ''A new User should know what role
it has''
Role expected, got NilClass

Polymorphic find_or_create bug
Today I just spent 3 hours (and before a demo!) trying to figure out
why my polymorphic association fields were breaking.
Turns out someone else put in a patch for this 6 months ago. I''m not
sure if its the same solution I''d use... I''d rather find_or_create
attempt to use AssociationProxy#build if its available and only
Base#new if we''re not on a proxy.

confirming that a model instance was correctly created from POST params
I''m wondering whether I''m wasting my time trying to verify that an addition I''ve made to legacy code is in fact setting a new attribute on a model.
Substruct''s (http://dev.subimage.com/projects/substruct) OrderHelper contains this method:
1 def create_order_from_post
2 @use_separate_shipping_address = params[:use_separate_shipping_address]

Spec failing [Possible Bug with kind_of? and instance_of?]
I have a spec which is failing, but I just can''t say why. Maybe I''m
missing something painfully obvious?
Here is the pastie of the results & the spec:

The spec to look for is "should have an array of users" I''ve printed

enforce mutual exclusivity
Hi,
First post, please be gentle! I couldn''t find any mention of this
already
I''m using ActiveRecord and I want to enforce mutual exclusivity on a
has_and_belongs_to_many.
A concrete example: I have a User which can have one or more Roles
(student, tutor, headmaster, administrator etc). However if a user is
a
student they cannot hold any other role. I was hoping to find

adding custom cache field
Hello,
I needed to add custom cache field for one of my application. I thought I
will share the code showing how to do this.
This code below creates and maintain a custom cache field, for keeping track
of totals. Say, you have accounts, and for each account there are transactions
(either deposit/withdrawal), and one will like to keep track of the total
balance for an account.
So, let there be a

Accessing Rails helper method with_output_buffer
Hi all,
I cannot figure out how to correctly use the with_output_buffer helper
method (located in ActionView::Helpers::CaptureHelper) inside a custom
FormBuilder.
Below follows a simplified example.
I''m trying to achieve the following behavior in an ERB as suggested in
the form_for helper docs in the Rails source:

Cache Magic field for totaling
Hello,
Rails provide counter cache field for associations, I want a similar cache
for totaling up values
(say account_balance = sum_of_deposits - sum_of_withdrawals).
I was wondering if rails, already has another surprise in store for me, or is
there any plug-in or how-to for doing these kind of things.
Thanks.

has_many :through and scopes: how to mutate the set of associated objects?
I have a model layer containing Movie, Person, Role, and RoleType,
making it possible to express facts such as "Clint Easterbunny is
director of the movie Gran Milano".
The relevant model and associations look like this
class Movie < ActiveRecord::Base
has_many :roles, :include => :role_type, :dependent => :destroy
has_many :participants, :through => :roles, :source

Is :finder_sql using #{id} broken?
Hi All,
It seems that :finder_sql in a HABTM association only interprets a
single quoted #{id} the first time through a query. I see examples
of this being used in a few places (though with has_many) and I don''t
really see how to use :finder_sql without a #{id}.
Am I missing something or is this just broken?

Validating an association
I have two models, A and B, related to one another by a many to many
association and I want to validate an object of model B as it''s being
added to the association based on both its own attributes and
attributes of the particular object of model A that it''s being
associated with.
I''ve realized that I can''t do this if the association is represented
