Desktop apps, OO and Scribus
I just came across a user who tried to view a Word document on a CentOS5 machine, and it seems that desktop, firefox etc. are trying to view it with Scribus instead of OpenOffice. This needs to change. Is there a system-wide setting for it? On the older, RHEL3 systems we used to have mozplugger, but it's not available in the standard CentOS repositories or rpmforge. What are we

Batch print office documents?
Hello: I need to build a system like this for a client: I will have a Linux server in a data room. It will have a web interface where the users may upload files. The files may be: Word, Excel, PDF, tif files, etc. Now, using the web interface, they should be able to brig up a list of files, select a set to print and send them to a local printer that is running as a shared printer on a Windows

plot merging/compression with R
Dear list, i just encountered a problem concerning the export of multiple plots. is it possible to merge several PNGs into one PDF document? i know that this could be easily done by pdf(), but the outcome of this is /way/ too huge (> 15 MB, four plots) and to my knowledge there's no way to compress PDFs directly in R. Hence the PNGs that are saved one at a time and afterwards merged by

AR 9.3+ vs. savable fill-in PDFs on CentOS
I've tried reporting this to Adobe, but they are remarkably deaf to such an enormous market of free software users. At least as of AR 9.3, including the latest 9.3.1, I have been unable to view or work with the savable fill-in PDFs that I've pulled off the web in the last couple of months. I have no trouble at all with them in my Windows virtual machine, but the Linux version starts up,

Mention about an open source image editor
Some days back there was a mention about an open source image editor that people uses for application layout designing. I have forgotten about the name of that software. Can someone send me the link? Silvy Mathews

Can't print PDFs or PSs in CentOS 5.0
For some reason, when I try to print any graphic PDF (or a PS file made from said graphic), it kills my Minolta 1100 laser printer, and I have to cancel the job, disable the printer and turn the printer off and on as many times as it takes to clear its buffer of the trash. I'm running CentOS 5.0 and have tried Adobe Acrobat Reader 7.0 for Linux; I have also tried printing the pdf to a file

print job gui for remote access
Users on Machine A with rights to log into and run jobs on Machine B using ssh want to be able to view and cancel print jobs on Machine B. This is easily accomplished via the commandline with lpq and lprm, but is there a GUI that I can give them? I have them running things like scribus using launchers like "ssh -X machineb scribus" and would like to provide similar functionality for

writefd_unbuffered failed to write 32768 bytes: phase "unknown"
Hi, I receive this error when rsyncing. I suspect this is because of network problems. But the 'Invalid argument' and 'phase unknown' makes it very unobvious. ... packages/scribus/scribus-1.2.3-0.rf.src.rpm Read from remote host rsync.sw.be: Invalid argument rsync: writefd_unbuffered failed to write 32768 bytes: phase "unknown" [sender]: Broken pipe (32) rsync:

CentOS LiveCD 5.3 release notes
I created both English and French release notes pages for the upcoming CentOS LiveCD 5.3: http://wiki.centos.org/Manuals/ReleaseNotes/CentOSLiveCD5.3 http://wiki.centos.org/Manuals/ReleaseNotes/CentOSLiveCD5.3/French The content is quite similar to the one from the CentOS LiveCD 5.2 except for these changes: - 5.2 -> 5.3 - file information (filename, size, md5sum, sha1sum) - some packages

How do I...
Only tangentially on topic, at best... Given a pile of html files, comprising chapters of a book, with a single html file that serves as a table of contents to the group, how would I turn the entire book into a single PDF? I can't think of a way to do that, all I can come up with would result in a pile of PDFs, one per html. But there's gotta be a better way. Suggestions welcome.

opinions please: text editors and reporting/Sweave?
dear all - I currently use Tinn-R as my text editor to work with code that I submit to R, with some output dumped to text files, some images dumped to pdf. (system: Windows 2K and XP, R 2.4.1 and R 2.5). We are using R for overnight runs to create large output data files for GIS, but then I need simple output reports for analysis results for each separate data set. Thus, I create many reports of

Meetme Options (new one)
Is it possible to select the audio stream that's played as a user enters a meetme conference? If you could, it would be very simple to record a users name, and then play that as the greeting to other attendees as they join the conference. If not, could someone tell me how hard it would be to modify the source? I presume at the moment the file to be played it stored in a var somewhere,

teaching R
Hello all, I am going to be running a small statistics workshop using R sometime in November. I am restricted to R because of the specific libraries I will be using - a good thing in my book - however the attendees are unfamiliar with R. I plan on giving as little R information as possible - just what is absolute necessary to run the statistics (the workshop is short, no time to spend hours
