setMethod "[" - extract by names within Slot
Hi R-helper! I have problem with setMethods for "[". Here is example : setClass("myClass", representation(ID.r = "numeric", ID.c = "character", DAT = "matrix")) to.myClass <- function(ID.r, ID.c, DAT) {     out <- new("myClass", ID.r = ID.r, ID.c = ID.c, DAT = DAT)     return(out)       }       setMethod("[",

Rprof and setMethod conflict?
I noticed this oddity about R profiling and setMethod. First, I "test out" Rprof. > require(methods) Loading required package: methods [1] TRUE > > Rprof("test.out") > data.frame("a") X.a. 1 a > Rprof(NULL) So far, so good. Next, I define myClass. > setClass("myClass", representation(mySlot = "numeric")) [1]

setMethod("min", "myclass", ...)
Hello, I have defined a new class > setClass("myclass", representation(min = "numeric", max = "numeric")) and want to write accessor functions, so that for > foo = new("myclass", min = 0, max = 1) > min(foo) # prints 0 > max(foo) # prints 1 At first i created a generic function for "min" > setGeneric("min",

[ and setMethod conflict?
I noticed this oddity about [ and setMethod. First, I define testFunc, which sorts a data frame by the first column and returns the entries that aren't NAs, and testIt, which runs testFunc repeatedly on a random large data frame, each time saving the return into a dummy placeholder (for demonstration's sake). > require(methods) Loading required package: methods [1] TRUE > testFunc

S4 initialize methods, unexpected recursive callNextMethod
Hi, Given a simple three class hierarchy: A <-- B <-- C I want to define an initialize method for each class such that when I call new("C", x=5), the initialize methods for A and B are used to incrementally build the object. When I do what seems obvious to me using callNextMethod, I get an infinite recursion. An example follows... setClass("A",

Extract callNextMethod "array" calls "matrix"?
I have a class that extends array and my method for "[" stops with an error: > setClass("A", contains="array") [1] "A" > setMethod("[", "A", function(x, i, j, ..., drop = TRUE) new("A", callNextMethod())) [1] "[" > a<-new("A",array(1:12,c(4,3,1))) > a An object of class "A" , , 1

callNextMethod
Hi, I don't understand why this code doesn't work (f(b2)): ///////////////// setClass("B0", representation(b0 = "numeric")) setClass("B1", representation("B0", b1 = "character")) setClass("B2", representation("B1", b2 = "logical")) f <- function(x) class(x) setMethod("f", "B0",

S4: When is validObject issued? (or why S4 is killing me:( ..
Dear UseRs, Does anyone know when exactly the validity is checked in S4? Documentation is silent:(. Here is a small example: setClass("test1",representation(a="numeric")) setMethod("initialize","test1", function(.Object,...){ a<-runif(1) ## here slot "a" is initialized ## callNextMethod(.Object,a=a,...)

Question on callNextMethod
I don't understand why I get the following results. I define two classes 'Base' and 'Derived', the latter of which 'contains' the first. I then define a generic method 'test' and overload it for each of these classes. I call 'callNextMethod()' in the overload for Derived. From the output, it appears that the overload for Base gets called twice. Why is

bug in callNextMethod (PR#14185)
Hi, there seems to be a possible bug in callNextMethod in conjunction with the [-operator. Interaction between callNextMethod() and selectMethod()
Hi, Strange things happen. Here is a simple example: > setClass("A", contains="integer") > setMethod("as.matrix", "A", function(x, ...) t(callNextMethod())) Creating a generic function for ?as.matrix? from package ?base? in the global environment [1] "as.matrix" > a <- new("A", 1:3) > as.matrix(a)

Why do methods of "initialize" have no "srcref" attribute as other S4 mehtods?
For documentation we use a system that generates Rd files from special comments in the code. (inlinedocs). It is crucial to be able to get the defining source code for objects like methods to extract the comments from it. Here is an R session that shows how this works for several kinds of methods and (at the end of the session) how if fails for methods of "initialize" >

Replacing slot of S4 class in method of S4 class?
Dear all, Assume that I have an S4 class "MyClass" with a slot "myname", which is initialized to: myname="" in method("initialize"): myclass <- new("MyClass", myname="") Assume that class "MyClass" has a method "mymethod": "mymethod.MyClass" <- function(object, myname=character(0), ...) {

Dots argument in apply method
Hello everyone, I'm working on a package using S4 classes and methods and I ran into the following "problem" when I tried to create an "apply" method for objects of one of my new classes. I've found a way around the problem but I wonder if I did not paint myself into the corner. I'd like your opinion about that. So I have an object "myObj" of class

S4 generating function

"registering" a generic method for a class
Sorry in advance if this is too simple a question, but I'm stuck with some odd behavior and I can't find the text to rid myself of this (admittedly somewhat trivial) problem. Note that I've done generic programming with S3 "objects" in the past, but I've never really dabbled in creating S4 objects until now. So, I've created a new S4 class, call it

getting environment from "top" promise
Hi all, It seems that there is a use case for obtaining the environment for the "top" promise. By "top", I mean following the promise chain up the call stack until hitting a non-promise. S4 data containers often mimic the API of base R data structures. This means writing S4 methods for functions that quote their arguments, like with() and subset(). The methods package

Seeking help to define method for show() for an S4 object
Dear all, I have created a new S4 class with name "MyClass". Please see below for it's definition. Now I want to create a method for the show() function for this class. In defining this method, what I want is, once user would like see an object of this class some values will be displayed. Then R will ask for **press Enter**. Once user presses enter then, remaining values will be
