How to create interrupted boxplot
Hello,
I have created two boxplots with following R code. There is one outlier in
B group.
The outlier is 33. But the all other data are between 0 to 4.
How can I skip y-axis around 5 to 25, and expand 0-4 for this case. Also I
want keep the outlier in my boxplot.
I want my boxplot look like the second one, keep the outlier, and make an
interrupt of y-axis from 5 to 25.
Thanks,
Jianghong

'beside' option for boxplots
Is there any way to get a boxplot of several data sets beside one
another on the same graph, as there is for barplot?
If I do:
d1 <- data.frame(a = c(rep(1:3, each = 3)), b = c(1:9))
d2 <- data.frame(a = c(rep(1:3, each = 3)), b = c(9:1))
boxplot(d1$b ~ d1$a)
boxplot(d2$b ~ d2$a, add=T)
It will show the two datasets on the one graph, but the middle point
will overlap.
What I want is

Drawing a loess line
Dear all,
To draw a lowess line on a plot was a piece of cake; to draw a loess
line, however, seems not that easy. Is the loess plotting implemented
at all in relation to the loess function, or do I have to look in
add-on packages?
Thanks,

Lines connecting the boxes in a boxplot
Hello,
I'm currently using a boxplot to visualize data for three different
models. As I have three models, I'm plotting three parallel boxplots
for each factor.
This works fine - what I need now is a line connecting the medians of
each boxplot of each model. I want to do this in order to visualize
the trend that one of the models exhibit. Basically, I want to plot a
curve for each model

Vertical text in a plot
Hi,
Consider this simple plot:
> plot(1:25,runif(25,0,1),ylab="First Y-axis label",xaxt="n")
I want to add an additional axis as
> axis(4,at=seq(0.2,1,.2), labels=1:5)
I have no idea how to add now the title of the new axis as "Second
Y-axis label". I want this text to be vertically directed from bottom
to top. I can't find the function in text() to write

side by side boxplots
Good Morning,
I am trying to get side by side boxplots of two groups on the
same variable. The last item under ?boxplot led me to some useful
code.
I use "boxwex" to make the boxes narrower, "at" to shift them
over and "add" to draw them both on the same graph. Something along
the lines of:
attach(group1)
boxplot(Y~X, col="blue", boxwex=.4,

adding the mean and standard deviation to boxplots
Dear list,
How can I add the mean and standard deviation to each of the boxplots using the example provided in the boxplot function?

boxwex = 0.25, at = 1:3 - 0.2,
subset = supp == "VC", col = "yellow",
main = "Guinea Pigs' Tooth Growth",

surpressing tickmarks / labels x-as for two sets of boxplot (plotted as stacked boxplots)
Hello,
I am trying to plot two sets of boxplots together. These are estimates of two
experiments and?seven?factors.
The results of the two experiments I want to plot as boxplots stacked to each
other.
Therefore I plot first the results of the first experiment; and next with the
add option the second set of boxplots.
The boxplots are plotted at 'at = 1:7 - 0.15 for the first experiment and

boxplot question
I'm graphing a series of boxplots of grouped data inside a function that
passes the data.frame, the names vector, and a title vector.
Because both the data subset changes with each successive pass through the
function, occasionally the names vector turns up with only one group to
plot. This is an expected result. However, when the names argument in
boxplot has only a single name, it

Stripchart and Boxplots side-by-side
Dear all -
With the following code I get Boxplots and Stripcharts in one Plot:
with(InsectSprays, boxplot(count ~ spray, boxwex = 0.3))
with(InsectSprays, stripchart(count ~ spray, col = "red", vertical =
TRUE, add = TRUE))
But the dots from the stripchart are plotted over the Boxes.
Is there any possibility to have Stripchart and Boxplots side-by-side,
i.e. to move boxplots and/or

error : unused argument(s) when boxplot
Dear all,
I am a total beginner in R, so sorry if this is the wrong place. I am using R 2.10.1 on a Mac (Mac OS 10.6.2).
I have this small dataset :
growth sugar

I have no problem reading the table, or getting the summary, but if I try boxplot(growth~sugar, ylab="growth", xlab="sugar", data=Dataset), I have the following error :

multiple boxplots on the same figure - reducing space in between
Hi
I have two vectors of integers and I am plotting a box plot that contains
both vectors. I have done the following:
vec1 < -scan("file1")
vec2 < -scan("file2")
boxplot(vec1, vec2, range=0, horizontal=TRUE, names=c("One","Two"),
boxwex=0.15)
I managed to get both boxplots on the same figure but there they are wide
apart. Is there a way to reduce

boxplots
Was there ever a convenient method provided to add boxplots to the current
plot at specified x values? There was a question by Martin Maechler some
time ago here, but I could seem to find any satisfactory resolution of it.
I see that there is an add=T option to boxplot and bxp, but I don't see
how to set the x-values.

Controlling size of boxplot when it is added in a plot
Greetings,
I am trying to add a boxplot to the bottom of a histogram, right
between the histogram bars and the x axis. Here is the code I am
using at the moment (the par line is probably not relevant for our
discussion):
hs <- hist(x, breaks = 20, plot = F)
par(mar = c(3,3,2,1))
hist(x, breaks = 20, main = NULL, ylim = c(-2, max(hs$counts)))

Quasi-bug in boxplot().
There seems to be a problem with partial matching of argument names
in boxplot(), in respect of the "horizontal" argument. I don't
recall seeing this issue discussed previously. My apologies if I am
being redundant. (A scan of CRAN revealed that someone had
experienced problems with the "horizontal" argument, but he was
spelling it out in full, so that was a different

Specifying data point locations on x-axis using boxplot() and points()
Hi all,
I would like to ask a question with regard to R graphics. I am currently
trying to add data points in boxplots using points(). In my script, I add
up boxplots three times using add=TRUE. I use points() every time I add
boxplots, and I see data points. However, I see all data points are clustered
at three specific points on x-axis; the locations of the data points
are not overlapping with

overlay of two sets of boxplots
Hello,
I am new to R and currently have the following problem:
I have successfully loaded my data in R which consists of two numeric columns (LI_F and female) and one character column (Strain). So far I can plot two different set of boxplots for each of the numeric columns plotted by the groups of the character column and the commands look like that:
boxplot(LI_F~Strain, ylab="LI_F",
