quotation marks and scan
Dear R People: I'm sure that this is a very simple problem, but I have been wresting with it for some time. I have the following file that has the following one line: CRS("+init=epsg:28992") Fair enough. I scan it into R and get the following: > u [1] "CRS(\"+init=epsg:28992\")" > gsub(pattern='\"',replacement='"',x=u) [1]

Dear R People: I have a small function that solves the "Jumble" puzzle from the newspaper (I know...big deal). It uses the the Linux "words" file. My question is: is there a similar words file for Windows, please? Thanks, Happy New (Gnu) Year. R kicking us out
Dear R People: I am using R for teaching purposes in a large classroom. Each computer has its own copy of R. However, every once in a while, about half of us will get thrown out of R, for no apparent reason. By the way, it has happened in other classrooms as well. Has anyone else run into this, please? If so, how have you solved this problem, please? Thanks in advance! R for Windows

lam vs. openmpi
Dear R Debian Users: I wrote a quick C program (eventually to become R code) and compiled it as: mpicc -o greet greet.c So far so good. Now when I run mpirun, this happens: erin at erin-laptop:~$ mpirun -np 2 greet ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- It seems that there is no lamd running on the host erin-laptop. This indicates that the LAM/MPI

advice/opinion on "<-" vs "=" in teaching R
Hi R People: I'm teaching a statistical computing class using R starting next week (yay!) and I have an opinion type question, please. I'm old school and use "<-" in an assignment. However, I'm starting to see the "=" in the literature. Which should I use or does it matter, please? Thanks for your input! Sincerely, Erin -- Erin Hodgess Associate Professor

Building R from source with the PGI compiler
Hello I would like to build R from source and use the PGI compiler, rather than the GCC compiler. I saw the instructions for the Intel compiler in the R Installation Manual, but I didn't see the PGI. I tried a few times without instructions, but without success. Any suggestions would be most welcome. Also, I hope this is the right group for the question. Sincerely, Erin -- Erin

r-package-devel is probably a better place to post this, especially if you do not get a satisfactory reply here. This list is about R programming, as you presumably know; your query is not.
