bitrate for slow modems

As others have said, 16kbps should do the trick. Keep in mind though that the quality of the sound will also depend on the sampling rate. MP3 will handle some higher sampling rates higher than some of

includes and libraries
Thanks to Mike for pointing me to ices and away from the braindead shout. I'm kind of stumped on this one, now. I compiled ices-0.2.3 just fine it actually works! :) Ok, so I want to reencode for a lower bitrate (ices -R) and it complains that I need lame. ok, so I grab it. I compiled lame-3.92 (and lame can at least be started on the cli) So I go back to ices-0.2.3 and run: # ./configure

24k, 56k, and 96k, is it possible?
OK. So I am running a 1.5 Ghz P4 with 256mb runing redhat 7.3 using Liveice, Lame and Icecast. Liveice and lame on the source box and icecast on the streamer box. 96k and 56k streams sound wonderful. But the 24k stream sounds like gerbils talking to each other. Any ideas of what would be causing this? Thank You, Mike
-- ///////////////////////////////////////// - Mike

ices - unable to compile
thanks Geoff. I was going to spare everyone the details and continue my search but I sincerely appreciate the help. Here's the output from 'configure', 'make', and 'make install', as best I could capture it. I'm not editing any of the make files or using any flags. This is the latest version if ices that is on icecast.org. It appears that libshout came with the

Problem with streaming some mp3s (but not all)
Hi! I would really appreciate if someone could try to help me out with this... i've been struggling with it for quite a while now. :( Anyway, I was trying to use ices to broadcast mp3s with icecast2 (a recent cvs snapshot of all 3 components from brendan's site). I have it working fine for some of my mp3s (encoded with lame -b 32) but with the other mp3s which are actually the ones that

Re: ices0.4: icecast mp3 stream for source ?
thank you, for your fast answer. my problem with ogg is, that the mediaplayer don?t understand it. a lot of users are using ms mediaplayer unfortunately. greets Geoff Shang schrieb: > Carsten Henkel wrote: > >> we would like to use IceCast 2.3.1 as a mp3 streamer source for >> reencoding several sources of ices 0.4. >> >> It is working perfectly already by using

Unable to get shoutcast sources to work
Hi: I have some people who want to be able to broadcast using a shoutcast DSP plugin with MP3, to an icecast2 server. But we can't get it to work. Since I can't be bothered booting one of our boxes into windows to try the shoutcast DSP itself, I decided to use darkice in shoutcast mode. I know this works with shoutcast servers. anyway, it connects, but only briefly, and then is

Icecast, freebsd, core dumped.
Hi: Firstly, there is no icecast 13.1. I'm guessing you mean icecast 1.3.1x. Icecast 1.x is no longer officially supported. Having said all that, icecast is just a server - it does not use Lame and it does not read from the soundcard. To help you any further, it would be best if you could load the core file into gdb or whatever the freebsd equivalent is and let us know where it crashed.

Suggestion: The ability to limit the number of ICY connections
On Fri, 21 May 2004, Jack Moffitt wrote: > Maybe this is a stupid question, but why don't you just use Oddsock's > plugins which support the better protocol? Not a stupid question. There's three considerations. 1. This project has around fifty broadcasters. It has been running for 3.5 years, and whilst some have moved to using plugins like SAM which (presumably) does

elegant way of re-encoding?
Hi, Now that I've been able to look at streamtranscoder 3.0, I see there's absolutely no documentation whatsoever. I've not compiled it, but I note that previously when you ran it first time, it would create a sample config file for you to edit. Maybe it still does this. Oddsock's flash demo may shed more light on this, but I can't use it so don't know. Geoff. --

24k, 56k, and 96k, is it possible?
I have tried changing the sampling rates. I have tried the two you mentioned below. Still no luck. Plus, if I disable one of the streams (either the 56 or the 96) the 24k stream works fine. Is LAME having issues doing 3 streams? Thank You, Mike

On Fri, 14 Jun 2002, Geoff Shang wrote: > Hi: > > The reason 24kbps sounds bad is in part due to the fact

darkice problems (was Re: Propping up liveice)
I tried darkice 0.9 with icecast 1.3.12 and lame 3.91. I specified a 64k stream and similar options to what works for us with liveice. Streaming worked successfully, and I applaud darkice for being fairly simple to build and configure. But the stream sounded like mud. It was worse than our 16k mono RealAudio stream. I re-examined my config, I rebuilt everything with gcc 2.96, then with

streaming to dialup users gives low quality audio
Hello, I've got two streams, one for broadband, one for dialup. Well, having had occation to use a dialup connection recently i checked the dialup stream. Although it was streaming what the broadband stream was, the audio quality was audibly worse. It didn't buffer, but it didn't sound as clear as the broadband stream. I used lame to encode the tracks to mp3 and used it's
