on change of drop down a textfield emerging
hi,
i have a situation where i have a list of options from which a user selects
his options if its not in the list he/she selects Others/Not Present and a
new textfield should pop up and the data entered there should be considered
instead of dropdown.
i have done this using javascript/dhtml but i was wondering how this can be
done using pure rails i.e using some of the RoR apis?.

auto_complete on steroids
I am trying to get more out of auto_complete than it apparently was
designed to deliver.
My problems seem to be two fold.
1 - I use aggregations on
names... :first_name, :middle_initial, :last_name and then aggregate
them using a composed_of :wholename thing
auto_complete_for seems to be wired to only use table columns directly
and gags on the aggregate form.
2 - foreign table columns -

autocomplete: how to access a child element of <li>
hi.
i promise this will be my last question for the day.
still playing with autocompleter, everything is working ok, but i''m
having difficulties accessing just the href attribute of <a> element,
which is a child of <li> in the autocomplete response, i.e:
<div class ="autocomplete">

auto complete a text field
Hi,
Im looking for a way to autocomplete a text field, I have found this,
http://wiki.rubyonrails.com/rails/pages/HowToUseAdvancedAutocompleteFeatures
but at the top it says "Note that there?s easier ways to do this built
into newer versions of Rails, this was written in the early days of the
framework. If I get a chance, maybe I?ll update."
Any ideas where i can find some info on

scriptaculous - auto complete textbox with a drop down
Hi,
I''m using scriptaculous to provide an auto complete textbox - and it
works perfectly - but I was wondering if there was anyway to let users
navigate the choices using the keyboard i.e the curor keys as opposed to
having to use the mouse? Apart from that it''s perfect! :)
Cheers,
Pete

Can anyone point me in the direction of a good tutorial on visual
effects in rails? I''ve searched and I''ve asked but I can''t seem to find
any good documentation on ajax visual effects, combining of effects, or
queued effects.

text_field_with_auto_complete doesn|t work in edit/show view
Hi,
I am using the autocomplete for text field with ''Scriptaculous'' and it
works perfectly fine in "new" action.
All the examples I see are only for the "new" action.
But doesn''t default to the selected value/text in "edit/show" action? Is
this possible or should I write custom code for "edit/show" action?
Thanks, Hari

Difficulty with params hash and submit_to_remote
Hi,
Is there any trick to initializing the params hash via submit_to_remote()? I
have a form with two submit methods - the regular, non-AJAX method, and the
AJAX method. The regular method works like a champ. The submit_to_remote
invokes the correct controller, but the params hash is empty except for the
values for :action and :controller.
I''d show my code, but it''s on

I can pull columns from clients table in this view by using...
<%= @placement.client.wholename %>
but if I use

Lookup from related tables
I have been working on this for 3 days and haven''t been able to solve
it.
I have 2 tables...
clients
belongs_to: case_managers
case_managers
has_many: clients
When entering new clients, I need to have some type of select box that
allows me to pick the case_manager (by name) so that the ''id'' field from
the case_manager table is inserted into clients.case_manager_id

routing failures
probably something really simple but I don''t understand.
Shifting to Apache to w/ fastcgi (definitely feels faster than webrick)
Anyway, I set the default route in routes.rb to be
map.connect '''', :controller => "placements", :action => ''list''
which worked once I figured out apache...
Anyway, now that I have done that, all attempts

radio buttons - how to identify record using value?
I''m making a simple questionnaire app using RoR. I''ve got a model for
Questions, a model for Answers, and a third model, Qa, for matching each
question to five possible answers through foreign keys. So, each qa has
a question and five answers , a1-a5, through belongs_to and a
:foreign_key, and then a selected_answer field for specifying which
answer was selected by the user. The

returned values and consequent usage
I think I can have finally reduced my problem to something somebody can
help me with.
I am using auto_complete...
specifically the form command is...
<%= text_area_auto_complete_for :case_manager :name %>
I need to use the value derived here in my controller...
If I use...
cm = CaseManager.find(:first, :conditions => "name = ''Thomas E Dewey''")
it works.

How do I use ''reply-to'' with Action Mailer
Hey there folks, I''m sure there is a stupidly easy answer for this, but
I can''t seem to find it. I''m building a site and I want a way for one
user to contact another. Simple enough. The problem lies in the fact I
want the email to ''come from'' the user, and not from my system.
In my ActionMailer class if I do the following:

collection_select default selected value
Hiall,
Unfortunately I just can''t find out how to setup a default selected
value when using collection_select. My call is like so:
<%= collection_select(:consultant, :lastname, @consultants, :id,
:lastname, { :selected => @current_consultant.id } ) %>
which is not working, I debugged so far that I know that
@current_consultant.id contains the correct value.
Any tips?
cheers

Disable autocomplete (Ajax.Autocompleter) on the fly.
I''m sure there is an easy way to do this, but it is one of those things
that is incredibly difficult to search for.
How can I disable an ''Ajax.Autocompleter'' element from working ''on the
fly''? I have a page where I''m using two (I know it''s crazy)
Ajax.Autocompleter elements and once one of them has got a result I
want the other field
