Checking root filesystem: Failed
Hi I am using ext3 on Smoothwall Express 2 firewall, which I understand is based originally off Red Hat. The machine runs headless, without a monitor. On one ocassion booting stopped, hooking up a monitor revealed this, -- console output -- /dev/harddisk4 has been mounted 29 times without being checked, check forced. /dev/harddisk4: Optimizing directories: 47165 140835 /dev/harddisk4: *****

Sizing login_process_size and login_processes_count?
Any suggestions on sizing login_process_size and login_processes_count for a server expected to be doing 100 to 200 simultaneous connections? Is there a way to separate login_processes_count between imap and pop? I would like to have at least 50 imap processes ready, but we rarely have any more than 5 to 10 pop connections. Would be a shame to have 40+ pop login processes doing nothing most

Comparing GLMMs and GLMs with quasi-binomial errors?
Dear All, I am analysing a dataset on levels of herbivory in seedlings in an experimental setup in a rainforest. I have seven classes/categories of seedling damage/herbivory that I want to analyse, modelling each separately. There are twenty maternal trees, with eight groups of seedlings around each. Each tree has a TreeID, which I use as the random effect (blocking factor). There are two

Help with accessing elements of a list
Hi, As part of the analysis of a longitudinal study, I have a list, called wg, on R 1.3.1 for windows created as follows - wg <- by(xx, xx$mrn, function(xx) lm(xx$maternal.wt ~ xx$gestation, data=xx)) xx is a data.frame, and so wg contains the results of 293 linear regressions, as lm objects. Now what I want is to extract the 293 intercepts and regression coefficients as a vector, and

postscript problems (landscape orientation)
I use the following function to export some figures to .eps: p.eps <- function(p, fname, title = NULL, width, height) { postscript(file=fname, onefile=FALSE, paper="special", width=width, height=height, horizontal=FALSE) print(p + opts(title = title)) dev.off() } Whenever I have a page consisting of *only* figures exported in this way, Acrobat Reader shows them in

plot to postscript orientation
Hi I am trying to save some plots in a postscript file. When I generate the plots in the main window, they appear correctly - their orientation is landscape (i.e., horizontal). However, when I open the .ps file with GSview, the whole page appears vertically, and the plot appears horizontally, which means that the plot is only partially visible (example here

using index of a loop as a macro variable
Hi, I'm a long-time STATA user and a R newbie. I'm doing ok, but I'm addicted to STATA macro variables. Is there something like a macro variable in R? Specifically, I'd like to be able to do something like for (i in 1:3) { ..... x`i' <- ... } where R would resolve x`i' to the objects named x1, x2 and x3 as I move through the loop. I guess I could create these in

drop elements of vector by class
i'm trying to build a little summary table for the contents of a data frame. t<-sapply(macro, data.class) c<-sapply(macro, length) m<-sapply(macro, mean, na.rm=T, digits=2) cbind(type=t, n=c , mean=m) I want to drop the variables that are factors so I can include -max- and -min- in my table. -macro- contacts the data--how do I drop the variables according to their data.class

nlme and variance-covariance matrices.
-- Dear R users, I have data on around 2000 birds from 3 generations for which I know an individual's pedigree (i.e. the relationship it shares with other individuals e.g brother, uncle, mother) and also a pedigree based on foster-families, because half broods were removed from their nest of origin and placed in a foster parent's nest. From this I want to model two types of random

LSA package: problem with textmatrix()
I have a problem with the textmatrix() function of the LSA package whenever I specify 'removeNumbers=TRUE'. The data for the function are stored in a directory LSAwork which consists of a series of files that houses the text in column form. As long as removeNumbers = FALSE or it is not present the textmatrix function works just fine. The error message I get seems to suggest it is

Problem with Trellis graphics in nlme
Hi, I would be grateful for help with a problem which is irritating me. I am quite sure that I am doing something stupid, but I can't see what it is. I am running R 1.7 on Windows 2000. The graphics device is the PC screen. The graphics from the nlme demonstration in Bates an Pinheiro's manual work just as advertised. The CO2 data and the Orthodont data dsiplay

image rotation? (orientation)
Hi there, So, I have this photo site. When the users upload photos, they are generally in a zip file. So the site unzips the photos and then generates 5 versions of each one: small_thumb, large_thumb, small, medium, and large. After it finishes that, it will forward the user onto a page where they can edit the pictures'' title, caption and orientation (20 pictures per page). This page

polar.plot orientation and scale in plotrix
Hello all- I would like to orient my polar.plot (from package plotrix) so that the circular scale runs clockwise and the origin (ie. 0 degrees) starts at the top of the plot. The defaults of running the scale counter-clockwise and beginning with 90 degrees at the top of the graph seems counter-intuitive to me. I'm using R 2.5.0, and plotrix version 2.2-4. Many thanks, Tim

How to print the graphs in landscape/portrait orientation (revised)
Hi, I made a few graphs by ggplot. The following codes produce a pdf file with graphs, sometimes in landscape orientation, sometimes in portrait orientation. I am using both Mac and Windows PC. Question: how can I control the orientation of the pdf file? I try to add a line pdf(paper = ?USr?) (or pdf(paper="letter")) in the following code, but it does not work.
