Possible Bug: file.exists() Function. Due to UTF-8 Encoding differences on Windows between R 4.0.1 and R 3.6.3?
Dear R Developers, I am having an issue with the renv package and R 4.0.1, which I suspect is related to base R and not the renv package itself, as with R 3.6.3 such an "error" does not appear. The error is raised by a file.exists() path, and path "C:\Users\J-tel\Documents", which in R 3.6.3 is read correctly, but in R 4.0.1 fails (Probably because of the "-"

Possible Bug: file.exists() Function. Due to UTF-8 Encoding differences on Windows between R 4.0.1 and R 3.6.3?
Hi Tomas, I received a report about R 4.0.0 in the knitr package (https://github.com/yihui/knitr/issues/1840), and I think it is related to the issue here. I created a minimal reproducible example below: owd = setwd(tempdir()) z = 'K\u00e4sch.txt' file.create(z) list.files() file.exists(list.files()) setwd(owd) Output: > owd = setwd(tempdir()) > z = 'K\u00e4sch.txt' >

Windows R CMD build <pkg> leftovers
A command R CMD build <pkg> that fails, e.g., because of C code compilation errors, leaves a directory %TMPDIR%/Rinst.xxx containing the file R.css. Although R CMD INSTALL --build cleans up after itself, build does not. A fix is below. Also, build.in references Rcmd.exe, which I thought was no longer necessary? Index: build.in

Possible Bug: file.exists() Function. Due to UTF-8 Encoding differences on Windows between R 4.0.1 and R 3.6.3?
Hi Juan, For bug reports to R, you should attempt to create a minimally-reproducible example, using only R's builtin facilities and not any other addon packages. Given your report, it's not clear whether the issue lies within renv or truly is caused by a change in R 4.0.0. Also note that you have not supplied a minimally reproducible example. If at all possible, you should be able to

patch: allow R CMD build exclude patterns to match symlinks
The following is a patch (svn diff) for the R CMD build script that calculates exclude patterns after the tar/untar step rather than before. The perl find() function, used in the calculation of the exclude patterns, ignores symlinks, which meant that directory symlinks were not considered for exclusion. Since the tar/untar step resolves (copies) symlinks, this works around that limitation.

Help required to install package from a website
Hi, I am new to R and I'm looking to perform some method comparison analysis and would be grateful for some help regarding package installation. There is a package 'MethComp' that I want to use (http://staff.pubhealth.ku.dk/~bxc/MethComp/Courses/Sthm.2007/.) Unfortunately I am unable to install it. I have tried numerous approaches but to no avail. this is the first time I have tried to

Possible Bug: file.exists() Function. Due to UTF-8 Encoding differences on Windows between R 4.0.1 and R 3.6.3?
Dear Juan, I don't see what is the problem from your report. Please try to create a minimal but complete reproducible example that does not use the renv package. Perhaps you could use the R debugger (e.g. via options(error=recover)) to find out what is the argument that file.exists() has been called with. And then you could try just to call file.exists() directly with that argument to

Possible Bug: file.exists() Function. Due to UTF-8 Encoding differences on Windows between R 4.0.1 and R 3.6.3?
Hi Yihui, list.files() returns file names converted to native encoding by Windows, so one needs to use only characters representable in current native encoding for file names. If one wants to be safe, it makes sense to be much stricter than that (only ASCII, and only a subset of it, there is a number of recommendations that can be found online). Using more than that is asking for trouble.

namespace? environment? how to manage functions?
Hi, useRs- I have been building a set of functions over time and now my R_GlobalEnv becomes too crowded. I would like to put all my functions under the same namespace/environment. Ideally, I would like to call them using "env::func" as in C++. The following code almost do the jobs I want - except that I need to add "env$" before defining each function. I can't do

Installation of packages via GUI, Mac OS X
All, I'm running R v2.7.1 on Mac OS X. When I go to the R package installer GUI, I am not prompted to select a repository. The usual screen is there but the columns for package, installed version, and repository version are all populated via blank entries. If I select "Get List" the error below occurs. The same thing occurs if I go form the command line via install.packages.

Functions returning functions
Dear All: I have a question regarding the behavior of functions. Say I define a function that returns another function : A <- function(parameters) { # calculations w/ parameters returning 'y' tmpf <- function(x) { # function of 'y' } return(tmpf) } The value of the parameters are stored in an environment local to the function. Then I call x<- something

Possible Bug: file.exists() Function. Due to UTF-8 Encoding differences on Windows between R 4.0.1 and R 3.6.3?
Hi Tomas, Sorry for the false alarm! I did some further testing, and you were right. There was no regression. I suspected it was a regression because the user who reported the issue said his code worked in R 3.6 but not 4.0. I should have tested it more carefully by myself. After I tested it again with the German locale and Chinese locale, respectively, I found that the code worked for both

host cross-compile patch
I tend to use the same tool-chain across various hosts so I made this very simple patch that allows you to pass the cross-compiler name to make ( e.g. make CROSS_COMPILE=i686-nptl-linux-gnu-). I'm not sure if patches should be attached or just pasted inline so I did both this time. BTW, it's relative to syslinux 4 but the same changes work with syslinux 3 although the patch won't

internet proxy settings (win)
I cannot access internet through R. My IT-guys told me that I should set the proxy and the port and then everything will be fine. Where can I set them? I use R 2.6.2 under Windows 2000 and these settings are those of the Internet Explorer (no password). issue with available.packages() and download.file()
Dear R-Users, I think I have encountered a potential bug (or at least unwanted behavior), but I'm not sure so I wanted to post here first. Lately I've been encountering an error when running a package I put together. I have my package set up to check for updates when it loads but this error occurs and stops the package from loading: Error : .onLoad failed in loadNamespace() for
