how to assign a group mean to individual cases?
I need advice on how to create a variable that is the group mean of
another variable.
For example, I have a variable called x for which each row in the data
set has a value. I also have a nominal variable called g that
indicates which of 100 different groups each row belongs to.
So, I want to create a new variable called w, which is the group mean
of x for which ever group the row belongs to (as

how to recode with an if-type statement
I'm sure this is easy, but I'm having a hard time figuring out how to
recode some data in R.
I have a variable "numpeers" which is valued 1, 2, or 3. I also have
three other variables called "w9zd9_1," "w9zd9_2," and "w9zd9_3." I
want to use these variables to create a new item called "distot."
Specifically, here is what I want to do:

"symbol print-name too long"
All,
I've coded a function and it works manually if I copy it line by line into R.
However, when I try to "load" (copy and paste) the entire function into
R, I get the following error after the listed line of code:
+ N.j.list = lapply(rej.hyp, length)
Error: symbol print-name too long
Does anyone you know what this error means? Strangely, when I copy the
same line verbatim

Covariance/Correlation matrix for repeated measures data frame
All,
I have a repeated measures data frame and was wondering if the
covariance matrix can be
calculated via some created indexing or built-in R function.
Specifically, say there are 3 variables, where potassium concentration
is measured 6 times on each patient.
Patient number (discrete)
Time (1 to 6, discrete)
Potassium (continuous variable)
I want the covariance/correlation matrix for the

means comparison with seasonal time series?
Dear R list,
I have a sequence of weekly observations of number of adults and larvae
in various size classes from a butterfly population living in a
subtropical area with pronounced wet and dry seasons. Wet and dry
seasons are each defined 26 weeks long with fixed start and end dates.
The data span 103 weeks (two seasons each of wet and dry) with some
missing weeks. What I would like to do is

1.7.1 console unresponsive following "paste into"
Dear R Help,
I've just installed 1.7.1 and have found that the console now exhibits
odd behavior when I paste commands into it. I'm on a PC running Windows
XP Professional.
I use Word as my script editor, and then paste commands into the R
console using the standard Windows "copy" within Word then "paste"
within Rgui. This worked without a hitch in 1.7.0, but now in

augPred plot in nlme library
All,
I'm trying to create an augPred plot in the nlme library, similar to the

their Pixel data.
My data structure is the same as the example but I still get the error

Lambert's W function
Hello List
does anyone have an R function for the Lambert W function? I need
complex arguments.
[the Lamert W function W(z) satisfies
W(z)*exp(W(z)) = z
but I could'nt even figure out how to use uniroot() for complex z]

Wilcoxon test output as a table
Hi!
I searched some time ago a way to get the Wilcoxon test results as a table
more or less formatted. Nobody told me any solution and I found nothing on
the Internet. Recently I came across this link (
http://myowelt.blogspot.com/2008/04/beautiful-correlation-tables-in-r.html),
which helped me to find a solution.
Here's the solution (I'm using R Commander):

Samba4 Winbind on DC Authentication problem
So, I've finally gotten around to installing a Samba4 AD DC. I've
joined a Win7 and Ubuntu machine to the domain so far, and all works
perfectly. Great job guys, it's nice to see this functionality working
solidly on Samba!
The problem is coming in on the actual DC host. My Ubuntu laptop is
running winbindd 3.6.18, and as I said, all went flawlessly. The DC
host is running

SSH - Winbind and Keybased Auth
Hi Team,
We have a weird issue that we are trying to understand. We have winbind set up and working successfully for user authentication with passwords via ssh. We have pam.d/system-auth-ac and password-auth-ac (symlinked) set to require membership of a group which works great via password authentication.
However, if the user has a ssh key set up, they seem to bypass the group membership

Random numbers
Hi All.
I have R code whose functionality is being replicated within a C+
program. The outputs are to be compared to validate the conversion
somewhat - however (as is always the case) I have stuffed my code with
random number calls.
Random uniform numbers in C+ are being produced using the (Boost)
mersenne-twister generators (mt11213b & mt19937) - which is the default
type of generator

filling a matrix who's entries are a function of the indices?
Dear R list,
What's the best way in R to fill a matrix who's entries depend on some
function of the indices? I'm currently doing:
Q <- matrix(0, k, k)
for (A in 1:k) {
for (B in 1:k) {
Q[A,B] <- my.function(A,B)
}
}
but I wonder if there is a more terse way.

Problem with a if statement inside a function
I have a really long functions, and at the end of the function, I am using a
if statement
to tag certain keywords based on whether they have certain values contained
in them.
However, the if statement doesn't seem to work.
When I had split up the commands into various functions, it worked fine, but
I'm not sure
what going on now that it's combined into a single function.

Any Amiga Samba users?
I'm thinking of using Samba to allow my laptop 486 to access the
CDrom, internet link and large hard disks in my Amiga. Does
anyone know if this would be easy to do, and if it's possible to get
Samba running using Miami?
cheers, Evan.

bandwith calculation
I would like to know how to calculate the amount of bandwith I would need to host X number of calls.
For example, if user A in San Francisco with an ATA 186 calls user B in New York with an ATA 186 and Asterisk is being hosted in a PC in Miami. How much bandwith do I need to have in Miami? Do I just need bandwith for the setup of the call (ie the SIP part) or are there any instances where the
