DRY encoding conversion and onload ajax execution
Hi everybody, my first Rails app is a frontend for customer data pulled from a legacy postgres database. The db is encoded in Latin1, but my pages will be UTF-8. What is the best way of character encoding conversion? I haven''t found any way to have Rails deal with this natively, so I assume I have to take care of this myself, right? Where would I place my conversion code if I want

NAMESPACE, S4, and .onLoad
The Writing R Extensions manual instructs developers who use S4 classes and methods in a package with a name space to: There needs to be an .onLoad action to ensure that the methods package is loaded and attached: .onLoad <- function(lib, pkg) require(methods) I'm wondering if listing methods in the Depends field of the package's DESCRIPTION file is sufficient.

Detecting Body Onload
I have a piece of code that "waits" for body onload. Every 30ms, it tests $(''body''). Seems that isn''t always good enough. I''ve hit situations where the DOM is "partially" loaded somehow. I fixed matters by setting a global flag... <body onload="bodyLoaded=true;"> which provides a better test... of course I could

Class not found when search in .onLoad
Hi, I am facing with a strange behaviour of isClass and extends when these are called in .onLoad in both R 2.12.1 and R 2.13.0. This is preventing my package from doing some object initializations at a proper place (i.e. in .onLoad). Suppose one defines two S4 classes in a package, and that one needs to check the inheritance between these two when loading the package (e.g. to validate slots

Best way for rgl's .onLoad to fail?
On OSX and Linux, the rgl package currently requires X11 libs to be available for linking. Recent versions of OSX don't include them by default, so I'd like rgl to fail nicely. Ideally, it will load a library that doesn't need to link to the X11 libs but will still allow WebGL code to work, but that's complicated, so I'd like a stopgap. I can detect that the failure is

R CMD check message that I can't figure out (.onLoad failed)

Best way for rgl's .onLoad to fail?
If I recall it correctly, at least on Linux, rgl only needs X11 when rgl.useNULL(FALSE). Is that correct? If so, I would say dependency on X11 is optional and therefore you should be able to load the package even without X11. Or is it that it still requires X11 libs but not an X11 server? Prototype error - iterator is not a function
I''m starting to learn to use Prototype (v1.5.1.1) along with Mootools. However I keep bumping into the same problem: All of the inserts result in the error "iterator is not a function" at line 542 of Prototype memo = iterator(memo, value, index); Am I missing something obvious here? I''m wondering if there''s an incompatibility between Prototype and Domino

How can I hide a DIV with a success message inside?
I want to have something like Facebook has. In some cases when you post something a success message shows up (on the same page, not a pop- up), stays 2-3 seconds and then fades away. How can I do that with Prototype? Thanks. --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Ruby on Rails: Spinoffs" group.

Can :before and :success move from view file into .rjs file?
Within the RJS template is there a way to specify when the visual_effect should occur? I''m trying not to repeat the :before and :success blind_down visual_effect statements throughout my views. It seems like the rjs templates can only take visual effects statements in the form of page.visual_effect :blind_up, ''divname''. I can''t figure out how to add

Please see this very basic class: fx.ScrollThumbs = Class.create(); fx.ScrollThumbs.prototype = Object.extend(new fx.Base(), { initialize: function(el, options) { this.el = $(el);
