association callbacks
Hello all. I am looking for some feedback on an implementation. I''m writing a plugin that will log all model changes. I do not want to have to add a line a code for this functionality every time I create a model. Instead I create a table with the name <model>_changes. The basic stuff was easy: base.after_create {|model| model.log_create if model.has_backup_table?

Problems with validates_lenght_of
I''m building a login system, and I want users to be able to update their password, first name and last name after signing up. So, when signing up password can''t be nil, and it must be between 6..20 characters long. However, on update, the user can choose to leave the password field empty (but fill in other stuff, like first name) and then I want the User model to not update

Need for multiple acts_as_list
I have a model "Childmodel" that belongs_to two other models "Parent1" and "Parent2". "Parent1" "has_many :childmodels, :order => :positionp1" and "Parent2" "has_many :childmodels, :order => :positionp2". i.e. The child is independently positioned within each of its parents. This works fine and gets me the useful

ActiveRecord before_ callbacks question
Hi! I need to set the primary key in a model and postgres table to something different than id. View Edit and such works in the scaffolded controller. However if I click in the controller below the list of data onto New then I get an error message like this: Showing app/views/admin/_form.rhtml where line #5 raised: undefined method `nr_before_type_cast'' for

lost in an ActiveRecord::StatementInvalid
I have an error I don''t know how to debug. I am adding the login suport in Depot (the example in the RoR book) and LoginController#add_user throws ActiveRecord::StatementInvalid in an innocent /login/add_user GET request. The trace goes down to a call to SQLiteAdapter#table_structure, and the source code suggests what''s happening is that "PRAGMA

initialising an instance variable on ActiveRecord creation
Hallo, I have a table like this: create table properties( id bigint unsigned not null auto_increment, property_variable_stack_id bigint unsigned not null, primary key(id), foreign key (property_variable_stack_id) references property_variable_stacks (id)) type=InnoDB; Here you can see a reference to a table property_variable_stacks. >From outside the Property class I can set up a Property with

belongs_to causing NoMethodError exceptions ... ?
I''ve got a really strange problem using belongs_to. I apologize in advance for the length... this is going to take a while to explain. Basic idea: Creating a User requires that the user enter an email address and activation key that matches an existing PendingUser. After creating the user successfully, that pending user should be marked as "used". The problem: When I

before_create is after_validatation :on => :create , when it should be before_validation :on => :create
In ActiveRecord''s callbacks, methods within a before_create callback are called after the validation, but before the model is created. This was an intentional design decision, but I think it was the wrong one. What do you think? When I think of before_create, I think of before_validation :foo, :on => :create, but, by default, before_create is synonymous with after_validation :foo,

self in before_create
Hi, I am having a small problem concernig how to access local variables in before_create. I am not sure how to really form this question but here goes: I am wondering why this works def before_create self.last_logged_in = Time.now self.created = Time.now end but this doesn''t def before_create @last_logged_in = Time.now @created = Time.now end The latter fails

How to write manage created_on and created_by via mixin?
Hi! Definite newbie here - I''m working through this like-hate relationship with Ruby and Rails right now... sometimes things work really well (like blobs seem to rock) but other times, I dunno! :-) Anyway, I''d like put in create and update user timestamps on all my primary domain tables and allow them to be updated automatically by ActiveRecord. Coming from Hibernate, I just

help with DRY violation
I''m trying to be a good rails developer and fix DRY violations as i find them. However, i''m trying to fix this one, i cant seem to get it to work. I have two tables A and B that have a one-to-one relationship. Table B belongs_to Table A. Table A has_one Table B. I''m creating instances of Table A in different places, depending on the controller. However, for each

DB trigger vs before_create
Hello everyone, I''m having trouble figuring out which approach is better. I have the following tables: products, orders and line_items. Every time an Order is placed, the quantity field in the products table has to be updated for each LineItem in the Order. One option is to use DB triggers which is not as portable as using before_create in the Order model. But with before_create I cannot

Observer behavior differences between DEV and TEST environments ?
Hi all ! I''m having an issue and I can''t seem to make heads or tails of it. I am attempting to add an observer to a model object. I created app/models/greenback_transaction_observer.rb, inherited from AR::Observer, defined methods, registered in config/environment.rb, but things don''t work... So, I took a step back and put in the following code: class

When adding a record in console, a parameter comes in as null even when I set it
In console, I am trying to create a User but the :account_id does not come in. Console just gives me back :account_id => nil. Obviously I''m trying to set it though. Silly console... But, I can set the account_id column in my controller like so: @user = User.new(params[:user]) @user.account_id = account.id @user.save Here''s what I give to the controller: User.create :name

My best guess at how to make this route map.connect '':user'', :controller => ''user'', :action => ''profile'' makes my link_to :controller => ''admin'', :action => ''index'' stop working ? I''m needing urls like http://localhost:3000/username but without breaking all my other controller index

before_create firing twice on a save - RC2
I have a unit test which fails using Rails 1.2RC2, because a method marked by the before_create filter is firing twice when my ActiveRecord is saved. Is a before_create filter supposed to cause multiple invocations? We have assumed it is called once, and only once, when the object is created, in our code (but we unit tested it to make certain). This is one of three issues I have with my unit

How do I validate using associated objects?
This doesn''t make any sense to me anymore. I have an Upload that belongs_to a Comment. Within my Upload model I expect to be able to access the associated comment with comment.foo. I can only seem to do this AFTER validation. I''m assuming before_create takes place between validation and updating the database, because when I try to access comment.foo within the validate

a problem with before_create and validations
I stumble across some strange problem. I have a model with a virtual attribute file_contents that is a string. The model has validates_format_of :file_contents, :on => create, :unless => no_contents? (The method that returns file_contents.nil?) Then, I have a before_create callback, where I get my model''s title and description by parsing file_contents, and do write_attribute for

why doesn't this work (setting attribute in "before_create")
Hi, Can anyone spot why the below doesn''t work? * I have a "created_by" column in my create table in the dB * I have a "before_create" line, which definitely gets called * I tried a few different ways to set the "created_by" attribute in the model but it doesn''t seem to work, i.e. doesn''t appear in the database
