choice of processors
Hi there
I am moving into a production environment. I will mostly be using Meetme,
with Ztdummy for timing. I have a question on which of 2 processor setups is
favourable.
I have the choice between Dual 2.8GHz Xeon Processors and a single Pentium 4
3.06GHz Processor. These will cost me exactly the same amount.
Would one of these processor setups be favourable, both in terms of
performance and

intel dual core processors and new kernel packages
I've just got bunch of RHEL4 erratas (looks like U2 is out). Looking at the
kernel errata (kernel-2.6.9-22.EL), one of the things in list of new features
is "Intel dual core support".
What does this exactly means? Does it mean if I have dual core pentium
processor and use older kernel that it will use only one core, and I need newer
kernel to use both cores? Or is it only

Memory increase in R
Dear All:
Pleas help me to increase the memory in R.
I am trying to make euclidean distance matrix.
The number of low in data is 500,000. Therefore, the dimension of euclidean
distance matrix is 500,000*500,000.
When I run the data in R. R could not make distance matrix because of memory
allocation problem.
In order increase memory, I read the FAQ and follow the instruction as

Dual Opteron or Dual Xeon?
I am about to lease another server to be a backup web/mail server with a
replicated mysql database. The current live server is a dual Xeon
2.8Ghz. Would I do better to get another Xeon server or an Opteron
based server? My concerns are compatibility of the database and the SSL
certificate currently running on the Xeon machine. Are these concerns
unfounded?
TIA

Tab-delimited AOV summaries
Hello,
I am trying to print out ANOVA summaries --- as returned by summary
(aov(...))--- in tab-delimited format, either to a file or to the
console, but so far I haven't been able to figure out a solution. My
particular ANOVA has repeated measures, so it is an instance of class
aovlist. Can anyone offer any suggestions? I am relatively new to R,
so please forgive me if I am missing

R loop function in Tableau
Hi R helpers,
I hope this email finds you well.
I am having trouble with R loop function in Tableau. Please see the attachment of a simple dataset. The problem is to test whether the value of columns is match.
Because Tableau do not have iteration function, I coded ?if statement? in Tableau to realize the function, which is slow if having huge amount of data. I wonder to integrate

How to utilise dual cores and multi-processors on WinXP
Hello,
I have a question that I was wondering if anyone had a fairly straightforward answer to: what is the quickest and easiest way to take advantage of the extra cores / processors that are now commonplace on modern machines? And how do I do that in Windows?
I realise that this is a complex question that is not answered easily, so let me refine it some more. The type of scripts that I'm

ext3fs patch for 2.4.16 kernel?
This maybe early, but is there an ext3fs patch for the 2.4.16
kernel -- also, in general where does one download the lastest ext3fs
patches?? I found the 2.4.14 patch a few weeks ago on in the linux.org UK
site, but all the patches appear to be taken off that site...Any help
would be most appreciated...
Thanks,
Chris

-1 and friends
Yo All!
Well I work on a diverse number of OS's with a diverse number of
clients. Some use F-Secure, SecureCRT, PuTTY, SSH.COM. OpenSSH, etc.
with a wide variety of versions between each, some from source,
some from rpms, etc... Basically a lot of legacy stuff that no one
has the time to update.
In fact I am working on a couple of OpenSSH config problems in the
last few days. Sometimes we

Filesystem security stuff
Dear all,
I am planning to add some cryptographic properties (file encryption and digital signature on file I/O) to Linux filesystem. In detail, I want that user can do file I/O with encrypted files like he used to do with usual file except some minor changes (e.g. supply key for decrypting file). For digital signature, all read and write acts on file of any user must be signed and recorded so

dom0 won''t boot - iwlagn MAC is in deep sleep
Hi all,
I''ve got a T61p running ubuntu 9.10, it runs kernel 2.6.31.20-server
perfectly with no hiccups. I recently decided to play around, and compiled a
2.6.32-10 pvops kernel, and installed xen-4.0.0-rc9. When I try and boot as
dom0, sometimes it works, and sometimes it loops an Error message: *iwlagn:

OpenSSH 3.0p1+AFS+PAM on Solaris 8
Seems like AFS support uses a structure in ioctl.h that requires
sys/ioccom.h to be included beforehand. The following patch checks for
this header file, and makes sure it is included. I don't have the
latest auto* tools, so I hand-synthesized "configure"; hopefully this
doesn't mask typo's in its sources.

5.1-R: zero byte core file.
While using 5.1-RELEASE, I find that if my application program seg
faults, it produces "programname.core"; but it is 0 bytes.
I ran the exact same program on another machine that was running
4.4-RELEASE, and I do get a core file that I can use with gdb.
I'd really appreciate if someone could help me resolve this.

Running nessus on freebsd...
I'm trying to get nessus setup for doing some internal security
checking. I installed the ports for nessus and nessus-plugins,
and everything worked as expected. I then registered for the
full feed of plugins, which got me up to over 10,000 plugins.
I restarted nessus, and it didn't work at all. I am running
without X11, so I'm doing batch runs. I already have nmap
installed, so I

[PATCH] Tighten /etc/crontab permissions
Hi folks,
While investigating OpenBSD's cron implementation, I found that they set
the systemwide crontab (a.k.a. /etc/crontab) to be readable by the
superuser only. The attached patch will bring this to FreeBSD by moving
crontab out from BIN1 group and install it along with master.passwd.
This change should not affect the current cron(1) behavior.
Cheers,

rpvm/snow packages on a cluster with dual-processor machines
Hi,
does anybody know how to use the dual processors in the machines of a cluster? I am using R with rpvm and snow packages. I usually start pvm daemon and add host machines first, and then run R to start my computing work. But I find that only one processor in each machine is used in this way and the other one always stays idle. Is there any simple way to tell pvm to use the two processors at

Problem with swap?
Hello,
today i typed "htop" for controlling my ressources. I could see that my
swap is neraly 100%. This problem occurs since start of the server,
about 3 year ago. Its not a critical issue for me, because the server is
running fine. Several times i incereased the size of swap.
Today 9,3GB of 10GB swap are allocated (33 day uptime). My system is
still running and i have no

R utilizing 25% of CPU for Dual core i3 370M processor
Hello Everyone
I have a dual-core Intel i3-370M processor and Windows 64 operating system.
I have a 3GB RAM and my processor can support a maximum of 8GB RAM.
I have virtual memory enabled on my computer.
I am running a program in the 64 bit R which implements a MCMC on a large
dataset and involves around 80000 iterations.
The processor estimates that it will take around 1000 minutes to

Single or Dual Processor? High volume MeetM e
I'm trying to get a souped-up test machine(G5 Xserve) from Terrasoft to do
some testing in a few weeks. If/when I actually get it I'll certainly post
the results here.
In theory the G5 should mop the floor with the Intel for high-volume
Asterisk Zaptel usage, and I have heard from several Mac-heads that they
have run three quad T1 digium cards on the Mac platform with no problems.
