More on global environment
To follow up on my previous question, suppose a user R session wants to
unload one workspace and load another within an R session. Is the
following the correct sequence?
1. save.image() to save the current workspace as .Rdata in the current
working directory.
2. rm(list=ls()) to remove everything from the workspace.
3. setcwd("xxx") to set the new working directory.

autoloading .RData files / .Rhistory file
NOTE: WinXP, R2.2.0
All,
a while back I posted a question about using relative filereferencing.
The responses have allowed me to successfully set up the following
directory structure:
...\data\raw
...\data\derived
...\prog
...\lst
...\log
In the \prog directory I have put an RGui.exe shortcut and "pointed it"
at \prog as the "Start In" location. In the same

3com mba 4.30 problem
Hello All,
I seem to be having a problem with PXE under the 3com MBA
once the pxe loads the standard redhat 7.2 lilo prompt and
I type my label which is a4-72 and hit enter, I get:
Loading vmlinuz...
and it stops most of the time. Sometimes it loads and once it gets to
the part of installing linux the screen turns red and I
get "interrupt handler not syncing"
Thanks

Subsetting a list
Colleagues,
I have created a list in the following manner:
TEST <- list(c("A1", "A2"), c("B1", "B2"), c("C1", "C2"))
I now want to delete one element from the list, e.g., the third. The
command
TEST[[3]]
yields (as expected):
[1] "C1" "C2"
The command
TEST[[-3]]
yields:

Renaming columns in data.frame, inserting/removing columns from data.frame
Hello,
I'm hoping that there is an easier way to rename columns in a data frame
other than by using the names() assignment, which requires you to type in
all the column names at once for a data.frame, in the case that I simply
want to rename a single column in a data frame.
Also, is there an easy way to move columns in a data frame around relative
to the other columns?
Thanks in

Extracting a range of elements from a vector
Dear R users
I am R newbie creating a function that implements the poker test to test
pseudo random bit generators.
Iam reading the bits from a text file (1 bit per line), which causes
each bit to be stored in an element of a numeric vector.
What Iam trying to do is to extract a "block" of bits of arbitray size
from the original vector into a smaller numeric vector and then count

Reading in FORTRAN data using R
Hi There:
I was wondering if there is a way to read FORTRAN list data (similar to
IDL's readf function). I often use FORTRAN for most of my number
crunching, and use something like IDL to visualize and perform
statistical analysis on that data. Since the each file is rather large
(>100 Mb), formatting the output into columns or tables is impractical,
hence the "list"

2.4.14 + latest patch != ext3 support
Hello,
I just need a little clarification regarding applying the ext3 patch to the latest kernel.
I have 2.4.7-10 that came with RH 7.2.
I have ext3 running.
I need to upgrade those (to get some USB device working).
So I got the latest kernel, 2.4.14, patched it with the ext3-2.4-0.9.15-2414 patch, picked ext3 from 'make xconfig', built the kernel, but the new stuff in /boot, etc.,

str and structable error
Hallo
I encountered a behaviour which puzzles me (but
finally I did get what I wanted).
I used structable and strucplot but I wanted to change
names of variables in structable object. I tried to subset
it, use names but to no avail. So I tried str and
expected to get a structure of an object but:
> sss<-structable(Titanic)
> str(sss)

Plot scales
I remember reading somewhere that locations on plots (in my case, arguments
x and y for legend()) can be specified in several scales besides the usual
data scale. I would like to set x and y as proportions of total plot size
or something similar. Can anyone steer me to documentation on how to do it?

PR #1833 Clarification (PR#1890)
This is (correctly) filed under "non-reproducible."
The corresponding notes say "solved by re-installing Windows (private
comm)." I would like to clarify that this was solved by re-installing the
patch known as "Windows 2000 Service Pack 2," not by reinstalling Windows
itself. Perhaps my original message was not clear.
I point this out because installing the

contrib pkg install problem on Windows with R2.2.0
Dear R-helpers,
I made the package depmix for fitting hidden markov models.
After updating R to version 2.2.0 on my PC I got the following error when
installing the package from a local directory. One of the C files includes
the R.h file which apparently causes problems.
I call
R CMD INSTALL --docs="normal" depmix
and I get the following error:

glm and capture-recapture
Hello,
I am almost new in R, so perhaps my question will be silly.
I try to use R for analyzing capture-recapture data in epidemiology. A cancer registry has different sources of patients. We know in each list, patients already known in all other list. The aim is to use capture-recapture models for estimating the number of patients unknow of all the sources.
Because no order in sources, one

r: fortran help
Hi all
I would like to know if anybody knows of either a good book or web site
that explains one how to use Fortran. I would like to call some of the
Fortran subroutines but before I can do that I first want to learn how
to code in Fortran.
Regards
Allan
