Rating/Survey Plugin
I would like include the ability for people to rate posts on my site from 1 to 5. I would like to then display the average rating for each post. To compute the average each time is obviously database and cpu intensive. I have been thinking about the best solution. I could certainly use a cache and expire it every x minutes. However, I don''t want to reinvent the wheel. Is there

Winbind local idmap and cache database security concerns
I am currently working on implementing unified logons between linux and win computers on an NT4 domain. I have a samba test server with winbind working properly. All is going well, except that I am concerned about the winbind idmap database stored on the local linux workstations. My current understanding of winbind is that it must be on every machine, unless an winbind samba ldap

Overriding default DELETE behavior with logical deletes
Hello! I am trying to figure out how to implement *logical deletes* instead of physical deletes using ActiveRecord. Basically, in many applications that deal with E-Commerce, you really can''t physically delete almost anything, because records must be kept for auditing and customer service tracking purposes. In the past, I''ve implemented logical deletes as follows: 1.

Modify and backup winbindd_idmap.tdb
Hello list, Is there a possibility to add entries to the winbindd_idmap.tdb manually? I know I can use tdbdump to see the entries, but is there a chance to modify? My problem is I have to map some uid to some Windows SID without using LDAP. On the other hand new user not having any uid in linux should map to the range of uid I defind by using idmap uid = 10000-20000 2nd Question: Is it

What are the benefits of RoR?
We''ve all seen the productivity benefits of RoR. It would be worthwhile to figure out where they come from. For me, I''d say the following: 1. The number one benefit isn''t from Rails per se, but from Ruby, or any other dynamic OO language (like Python). They avoid the weaknesses of loosely typed, procedural languages like Perl & PHP, but have the swiftness

external updates to database
Hi, I have the following situation: I have developed something using ROR. The data that is being displayed by the view needs to be refreshed periodically - The data pertains to the state of machines in a cluster. I dont want to query the state in my model, because it may take a long time to do that. I want to have a thread running (in the background) which is constantly checking the status

Database Triggers?
Hi, I''m new to RoR and exploring its use with an existing application. One thing I can''t seem to find much detail on is using database triggers. All RoR examples and tutorials I''ve seen are very basic saving data back to a single table. My use case includes a somewhat denormalized DB that uses triggers to store data in multiple tables on occassion. I currently

Handle sleep/hibernate/wake-up in WIndows
As per title it seems like tinc installed as a service doesn't handle well the sleep/hibernate/wake-up calls e.g. the service is unresponsive after a wake up rather than restarted. As i read it should be easy to fix: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/11367318/how-do-windows-services-behave-when-entering-waking-up-from-sleep-or-hibernate-m
