[OT] How to pick a shared host
I''m *not* looking for vendor recommendations or dis-recommendations -- I''m looking for the right *questions*, not the right answers :-) I''m giving a talk in a couple of weeks which has to include a segment on how to pick a good shared hosting service. The audience are institutional clients looking to support web-apps ranging from organizational intranets to

Tracktion
This is being offered gratis till the end of december by Mackie. This one might just be coaxed into running under Wine which would be quite an achievement. Kudos: 1. The program, though free, needs be registered to a "machine number". Did this under Windows, did not get that far using Wine. Might need a second copy just for the Linux runs. 2. The program searches for all its own

Survey: Favored Rails Production Environment
We''re trying to set up a colocated server for deploying a Rails application or three. Right now I''m undecided between a PC-based server running FreeBSD and an Xserve running OS X. I''ve never colocated before so I''m wondering if anyone has stories, tips, or could say what their preferred OS is for running Rails. I''m also wondering how performance of

Naming convention for foreign keys
Hi, In "Agilge Web Development With Rails" on page 217, an example of foreign keys is shown. I am however unable to find a definition of wheater the naming of the index is significant. On the above mentioned page, this line is shown in the example: constraint fk_items_product foreign key (product_id) references products(id) In "fk_items_product", "items" is

[Slightly OT] "Open Source Development + Tools" - Book/Resource?
Greetings all- My apologies for the slightly OT post. My primary production platform *IS* CentOS 5.x with a minor scattering of 4.x machines behind firewalls here and there... I find that I'm being placed more and more into a 'quasi-developer' role which strays some from my normal system/network admin duties. Specifically, having to work with the deep internals of make, autoconf,

multi-server rails deployment
I''m building an app in rails that will be deployed on 3 different servers but am not sure the best way to deploy it. The app is something like Google Adwords (an online advertising program, essentially). ServerA is the Administration server ServerB is the Ad server (feeds ad requests to affiliates) ServerC is the Click server (handles incoming clicks from our affiliate sites) All 3

Dear R users, even if this question is not related to an issue about R, probably some of you will be able to help me. I have a square matrix of dimension k by k with alpha on the diagonal and beta everywhee else. This symmetric matrix is called symmetric compound matrix and has the form a( I + cJ), where I is the k by k identity matrix J is the k by k matrix of all ones a = alpha - beta c =

samba 3.0.28 and dropboxes
All, I searched archives and found one related to our problem, with subject "samba 3.0.26a and dropboxes", but there was no solution. So posting this again for hopes of a fix. We have dropboxes where users can drop files in someone else's dropbox folder. You have write permissions but not read for the folder. In UNIX the dropbox permision is set as 2733. This all

Capistrano and multiple Dev environments?
I have working copies of code in development on multiple places - work machine, home machine, laptop, etc. I can''t always force these machines to use the same credentials; I end up with each machine having slightly different database.yml configurations. With Subversion-Pre-Capistrano, I left the entire config directory out of Subversion (or some kind of template; see

Switching to production environment
Hey All, I can''t seem to find a straight answer, but I was wondering if someone could provide me with a simple explanation of switching to the production environment. It looks like I could just alter environments.rb under /config, but that seems like a hack. How would I go about getting my application running in the production environment? Cheers, Eric Czarny

Frustrated with RoR environment splintering
Why isnt the RoR community focusing on robust and scalable mod_perl style of Apache environment, rather then splintering all over the place with lighthttp, mongrel, WEBrick, SCGI, fcgi, etc??? Its frustrating as someone who is trying to migrate to RoR. Its very unlikely I would ever get a contract to work on any webserver except Apache, so it would seem logicaly to focus all our efforts to

Doubt on usage of rsync for chown of existing folders
Hi Kevin, Thank you very much. I changed my user in the remote machine (su). Then, by trying again with rsync but with no modification in the source folder, I see that file ownership continues the same. Would be possible for rsync to change the ownership in this case (I am not root) ? Thanks, Regards,CJ Em Quinta-feira, 10 de Setembro de 2015 20:01, Kevin Korb <kmk at
