Trouble with composed_of
I''m trying to use composed_of within my model. I have a field in my database named ''card1'', which is simply a string. I have this in my model class Player < ActiveRecord::Base composed_of :card1, :class_name => ''Card'' end class Card attr_reader :value, :suit def initialize(s) @value = s[0].chr @suit = s[1].chr end end The

Mapping to BigDecimals instead of Floats
Hi everyone, I''m new to Rails and Ruby, and have been working my way through the Pickaxe and Agile Rails books for the last week or so. With a background in payroll apps I found that the default ActiveRecord mapping of decimal columns to float variables really bothered me! Financial calcs need high levels of accuracy and floats just don''t give you that. I know there are a bunch

Creating a "Foo has_many bars" association where bar isn''t a model.
Hi Let''s say we have model Foo. Each Foo instance can have several bars. Those bars are primitive, so they shouldn''t be models. For example, Foo might be a type of convention, and the bars might be years the convention was held in. Naively, we would have a conventions_years date, and put: has_many :years inside class Convention. But then we''d get an error, since for

Currency calculation
I''m thinking of experimenting with some currency conversion. However, I''d like the conversions to be in synch with the current rates. Anyone know (and this maybe out in left field) if there is some online (perhaps xml) or other data stream I can connect with in my code to output values based on user selection ? TIA Stuart

Model Validation & Floating Attributes
Hello all ! I have a model being validated that spits it''s error messages on the resulting page using: error_messages_for(:mymodel) .... Basic stuff. It''s working perfectly. Now, I have something else I want to check on the same page (that isn''t an attribute to the Model)... and am trying to add it using: @mymodel.errors.add_to_base("another error here")

TimeZone, TZInfo, daylight savings, and composed_of
Does anyone know the best way to track time zone information. There doesn''t seem to be much documentation on this. So far it seems like a simple db field like create table accounts ( id int unsigned not null auto_increment, name varchar(50) not null, time_zone varchar(50) not null, ... primary key (id) ) and a class like class Account < AR ...

form_remote_tag and redirects
I would like to have a login box setup so that if incorrect info is submitted, the box "shakes" via Effect.Shake. If the correct information is submitted, I want to redirect to some other page. The only solution I''ve found is the following, which is pretty ugly, as it displays the javascript I''m invoking on the page prior to the redirect. Here is the code: The Form

Javascript/AJAX Debugging
Hello ! I''m trying to implement something similar to the "multiple updates" section of the Web2.0 chapter of the Agile book. I implemented my version, and nothing is happening. No javascript errors, my logs look fine, page is rendered fine... just no Effect.Highlight. Here is the code: views/causes/cause_home/index.rhtml =============== <%= form_remote_tag(:complete =>

Integrating multiple applications
I''ve got a couple apps that I use (billing app, support ticket app, some other custom apps) that I want to integrate into one site. They will all use the same layout for the most part, and will link between each other. When I initially thought of doing this, I figured if I put the apps at different roots - /billing /support etc - then the links wouldn''t work at all, because

Little Ferret Problem
I''ve implemented Ferret, using the instructions here: http://wiki.rubyonrails.com/rails/pages/HowToIntegrateFerretWithRails I get no errors in the application at all... however, I always get 0 results. I built an index off of some data, it exists in the index/ directory, the form submits find... etc... Just 0 results... all the time :) I confirmed the data from my models is being put

Multiple Model Validation
Hey All ! I have a form which contains two models. I would like both models to be validated, but have their validations aggregated on the page. If I do: <%= error_messages_for(:model1) %> <%= error_messages_for(:model2) %> It puts two big validation blocks on the page. I would like all the errors from both models, but only in one validation box. Is this possible ? All my attempts

Sanity Check
Maaaaaaaaaaaaajor sanity check needed. I wrote a simple little plugin, and it wouldn''t load. I put some comments in it''s init.rb, and it didn''t even spit those out. So, I dug into the initializer.rb (/vendor/rails/railties/lib/initializer.rb) to see wtf is going on, and found the problem... but... can''t explain it. Here is the code in question:

Hi all I extended the Globalize Plugin the following way: -------- module Globalize class Currency def conversion_rate code = Locale.active.currency_code rates = { :USD => 1, :CHF => 0.75, :EUR => 1.1, :GBP => 3.1 } value = rates[code.to_sym] raise "No conversion rate found for currency

how do I validate currency format if I am storing in cents?
Hi all - To avoid floating point issues, I''ve decided to store monetary values in cents in the database. However, the user will enter these in dollars and cents. Two questions: 1) How do I do the validation for the currency format? It looks like ActiveRecord truncates the cents since it thinks the field type is a Fixnum. Am I forced to do validation in the controller? 2) Where

Rails and Offline processing
How are you guys handling threads or server processes that have to, for example, process the data in your application on a periodic basis? Cron jobs can do it and then run on the database. But, are there ways to launch threads within the rails application itself. I have heard of WebBrick ways, but I am working with lighttpd, fastcgi? (textdrive if you are really interested).

New Rails site... RightCart.com
Hello Everyone ! Wanted to announce the launch of a new, 100%, Ruby/Rails based shopping system. http://www.rightcart.com (our blog: http://www.rightcartblog.com) It''s basically a shopping widget that allows users to make purchases directly through the widget.... no need to be redirected to a third party shopping cart. You can sell anything you want by upload the products onto the

Fixtures and Relationships
In my daily development, I migrate back and forth between versions, and often do: rake load_fixtures... ... in order to populate my development database with fun data. Now, with any HABTM relationship, there are failures, as there is no way to say "which" fixtures to load first. Within an actual functional or unit test case, you could simply load them in the proper order, but

Money library usage?
Hi, I''m obviously doing something stupid, but I''m trying to figure out how the Money library (http://dist.leetsoft.com/api/money/) is supposed to work. I have a Product model and I want to have an attribute in my model called "price" and I want it to accept Money objects. So I have this in my Product model. class Product < ActiveRecord::Base composed_of :price,

RJS and Form Validation (Best Practice)
Hello All ! I''ve been using RJS extensively, but haven''t done any form validation with it until now. Should I be manually passing the RJS template some models error messages from the controller.... or ... should I be using error_messages_for in order to do the display ? I''ve implemented the first approach, but it seems like quite a hack. Any insight would be greatly

Escaping the AJAX View
I have a login form, in which I use a "form_remote_tag". I''m redirecting users to this form when they fail authentication as well... and using the "jumpto" method of capturing they original URL they requested via request.parameters, and redirecting to this URL after they authenticate. Problem is, if I try to do a "redirect_to", this won''t work, as
