Documentation of R Version 2 binary file format (.rda)
Is there a document available that gives a clear description of the layout of data in a version 2 .RDA file. I have a free program (http://www.vsn-intl.com/genstat/downloads/datald.htm) (Windows/Linux/Sun MOTIF exes available) that reads and writes a wide range of file formats, and have been requested by my users to add R to this. It already does S+. Regards, David

lmer and estimable
Hi everyone, I'm using lmer and estimable (from packages lme4 and gmodels respectively) and have the disconcerting happening that when I run exactly the same code, I get different results! In checking this out by running the code 50x, it seems to be that answers may be randomly deviating around those which I get from another stats package (GenStat, using the linear mixed models functionality

read.spss Error reading system-file header
Is there any documentation on what kind of SPSS file can and cannot be read by read.spss? Alternatively, how can one modify or "clean" an SPSS file to make it readable by read.spss? What properties must a *.sav file before read.spss can read it? The file in this example is 270KB, with 5 rows and 173 columns. I have no trouble reading larger files with read.spss, so it's not

about vsn
Hello sir: As to the "variance stabilization" method which is applied in the "vsn"package under R environment, here's a question about the ratio of the 2 channels: After applying vsn,we can get new_cy5 and new_cy3 intensity according to the original cy5 and cy3 intensity respectively. And the new_cy5 new_cy3 are similar with ln(intensity). But how can I calculate the

Importing csv files
There is a recurring need for importing large csv files quickly. David Baird's dataload is a standalone program that will directly create .rda files from .csv (it also handles many other conversions). Unfortunately dataload is no longer publicly available because of some kind of relationship with Stat/Transfer. The idea is a good one, though. I wonder if anyone would volunteer to

Excel to R
I have Excel files containing data that I would like to move to R. They are in the standard form of a one row header followed by rows of data, one record per row EXCEPT that there are a few rows of comments before the header. The number of rows of comments varies. For Excel files of this form without comments I have had success with: require(RODBC) z <-

RedHat Linux AS4 64bit samba to ADS share issue ... winbind start/stop makes it work....
Have a bit of a situation and hope someone can help shed some light. Have the attached samba config on a RedHat Linux AS4 x86_64bit system and have joined the box to our Windows 2003 ADS environment using: Net ads join -Uadmin. We can map a user to their home directory without issue. The [dataload] or other shares we receive a window on our windows boxes that request identification on

rsync question
I'm trying to rsync a 8TB data folder containing squillions of small files and it's taking forever (i.e. weeks) to get anywhere. I'm assuming the slow bit is check-summing everything with a single CPU (even though it's on a 12-core server ;-( ) Is it possible to do something simple like scp the whole dir in one go so they're duplicates in the first instance, then get rsync to
