summary with names
Hi, how can I tell 'summary' to print the name of the summarised variable? This is probably an awkward newbie question but I didn't find an answer in the Docus, the FAQ and maillist archive. I want a summary for about 250 variables and realise it the following way (I know, that I shouldn't use iterations that way in R; but at the moment it's the easiest way for me):

Weird problem with median on a factor
Hi all, I hope this isn't a naive newbie question again. Here you can see column 264 of a data frame containing data of the same interview in May and September. Column 264 contains the answers of 49 persons to a question in May. > fbhint.spss1[,264] [1] teils/teils sehr wichtig <NA> <NA> sehr wichtig [6] sehr wichtig sehr wichtig sehr wichtig <NA>

Graphics overview
Hi, is there an graphics overview, where the graphic capabitlities of R are shown with the corresponding code? I already tested 'demo(graphics)', that isn't that comprehensive, 'demo(image)', 'demo(lattice)', searched the Mailarchive, googled and the FAQ keeps silent, too. For example, I know how a special graphic I need should look like, but I don't know

AW: summary with names
As I read this, my answers to the other guys don't seem to be delievered to the list, although I sent them nearly 4 hours ago. I fear, I only sent them to the posters and not to the list ... I try to correct this! Sorry! Axel Benz schrieb: > Which name do you want? > varA1 This one resp. the corresponding one in this way (varA2 etc.). > or > fb.12.unt[varA1] > or even then

repeated measurements with R
Hello All, I have a more statistical question, and how this is implemented in R. The problem is the following: We have 2 different solutions (samples), which are filtered and then the concentration of the filtrate is measured. We want to evaluate how the filter proces and the concentration measurement influences the detection of the difference of the two solutions and which step has which

A hint to start ESS-xemacs
I'm trying to use ESS & xemacs under debian linux testing and KDE. My problem is that I didn't find any document in the internet explaining a **step by step** session with R and xemacs. The (wrong) procedure I follow (to no avail!) is: 1) I start R in a terminal window; 2) I start xemacs and open a file with the extension .R (test.R); 3) I issue M-x R RET and I can see an Rd new

Some more help needed...
As an absolute beginner, still reading "Modern Applied Statistics with S" and exercising with its examples, I'm frequently stopped by what it looks to be R poor help system (or is it my gigantic ignorance?). I mean that using help many arguments of a command seems to be given for granted like for instance: ............................... ?lines lines(x, ...) ## Default S3

High frequency time-series
Having to collect hourly electricity loads and quarter-of-an-hour electricity production data for some years I think that the tidiest way of doing it is to resort to ts but I don't know how to define such a frequency starting from a set date. Leafing through r-help mail archives I've found this *ALMOST* satisfactory message: ==========================================================

Organized examples for newbyes
I'm learning R from scratch on my linux box, being deeply biased at work by those graphical programs, nice to look but often poor in content and almost generally limited, running under M$ Windows. I wonder if someone out there can suggest to an absolute beginner as I am where to find a collection of examples of R-code (or Splus, as I understand) to play with in order to learn R quicker. The

Disabling Machine Account password change
Hello! We have a school environment with Debian servers and Win2K clients. There are about 700 clients and 30 servers. There is piece of hardware installed on all clients the resets the changes made to the local disk at reboot. This seems to be a problem with Win2K changing machine account passwords every 30 days (according to MSDN). The server saves the password, the client resets it and domain

What's "latex" for?
As an R absolute beginner when I update my R 1.8.1, after installing the packages I see the various updated commands orderly running in a table on the screen where, among other things, "latex" and "example" are indicated. 1) Being an old user of latex what **exactly** the "latex" label on a command mean and how, in what context, can it be used? 2) How can I see the

I'm reading Ripley-Venables "Modern Applied Statistics with S - Fourth edition" , at the same time trying the examples proposed in the book using R 1.8.1 under linux. Now I'm trying the following code from the book (example code of spatial statistics at page 76) with R : | data(topo) library("spatial") topo.loess<-loess(z ~ x * y, topo, | degree= 2,span=0.25) |

No error on change to password below configured length
Hello! Our users change their passwords using the original Win2K password change mechanisms (Ctrl+Alt+Del -> Change Password). If one of the users changes his password and the new one is shorter then 5 characters it is rejected. This appears in the logfile and that's OK so far but the users don't get notified. They think the password has changed and use the new one. Why is that? Could
