Self-referencial habtm relationship
Heyo! I am setting up a self-referencial habtm relationship with the users of my app. I am using Chad Fowler''s "Rails Recipes" to get me started, and everything works great with the join table "people_friends". I add friends by doing somebody.friends << somebodyelse. However, with my app, there is an approval process so my join table has columns person_id,

Random routing errors in 1.1.3 with Mongrel
Since upgrading to 1.1.3 on our dev box, we''ve started to see random routing errors with our apps running under Mongrel in production mode. The errors seem to go away after a while but come back everytime we restart the server. This may be a mongrel problem, it may be a rails problem (I''ve posted a bug on the trac) and I was wondering if anybody else had had similar

Unobtrusive javascript...what if?
What if...you could produce accessible, unobtrusive javascript, using Rails built-in javascript/prototype helpers, with just one extra line of code in your layout, a plugin, and one small enhancement to the helpers. Something like this: [php] <% form_remote_tag :controller => ''foo'', :action => ''bar'', :unobtrusive => true %> # which produces

Unobtrusive Javascript for Rails
I made a brief post on here the other day about this and now I can proudly present the initial release of our unobtrusive_javascript plugin for Rails. We''ll be working with Dan Webb of Vivabit to roll in much of the functionality in his own as-yet unreleased unobtrusive_javascript plugin into a single plugin. This is essentially a preview release and probably not suitable for use on a

sudo in switchtower and security
I''m attempting to deploy a rails application using switchtower. My IT guys are refusing to give me sudo for a user changeable script. I really can''t argue with their logic. If I have sudo for a script that I can update, well, I can do most anything I want. They are suggesting I create a cgi that performs the same function. Since the cgi would run as www-data (this is a debian

SMS service for Rails app alerts - recommendations for free/cheap service/approach for rails apps???
Hi, I''m interested in triggering SMS alerts from my Rails app (hosted on Dreamhost) for key events or errors. Any recommendations re whether there is a free SMS service to enable this? Or else a cheap service? Also whether there is a rails plugin to make this easy? Tks Greg --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to

What''s the verb form of id?
Random question: I''ve written a method for the String class that turns an arbitrary line of text in to an identifier, e.g.: "My, what a beautiful day!" => "my_what_a_beautiful_day" "(anb*#NF(AMNV" => "anb_NF_AMNV" We''ve got all these great names already like underscore, classify, titleize and things like that. I''d

[INFO] SMS Aggregators
Awhile ago, I posted some information about SMS Aggregators, this is just a follow-up, based on changes in the US market. As of January 31st, any commercial application, sending to US networks, is required to lease a CSC (short code) from CTIA. A CSC runs $6000/year for a random code, and $12,000/year for a vanity code. These charges are on top of the normal per message fees. This does

Sending SMS from Asterisk
Hi: Say I want to build an IVR application which sends an SMS message to a mobile telephone when the caller responds to a prompt in certain way. I think I can manage the part about generating the message and building something to actually send it. The part I'm foggy about is: how would I actually get the SMS message to the carrier? Discussions with the carrier have led absolutely nowhere

Web/HTTP Testing
Hello, I am looking for a user test automation tool. When I say ''user'', I mean it should mimic the user interacting with the app. That ultimately boils down to a tool that drives a browser or is able to make http requests and allow us to deal easily with the responses. Our requirements are to be able to write the tests in Ruby (no need to switch to other language for test

Naming Convention for Controllers?
Hello! I just read DHH''s presentation pdf. In his examples, he wrote PeopleController instead of PersonController. I''ve been using singular words in controller''s name. Which is more common? Thanks. Sam -- Posted via http://www.ruby-forum.com/.

OT: MWI on Treo 600/650
My cell vm goes to asterisk, not the carrier. Apparently MWI is turned on/off with specially formatted SMS messages. Anyone know how to do this on a Treo 600? Having the phone light from Asterisk would be HUGE ... not to mention extremely cool. dbc.

How far can you get without learning Ruby?
This has been my little experiment for the last few weeks. I jumped straight into rails after a few tutorials and have been using "Agile Web Development with Rails" as a reference. I picked up the Ruby syntax from examples which was not hard to do as I know various other languages. I''ve started 3 database driven web apps and all was going really well. Rails is fun and

Problem with routes when I move the app to a different machine
Hi all: I have an application that runs great on my macbook pro, however, when I move the app to the production linux box, all routes fail except for the one I set up as the default: map.connect '':controller/:action/:id'', :controller => "Employee", :action => "status" I made sure the shebang line in dispatch.* was set to be OS independent
