Polymorphic Associations
If anybody on edge familiar with this could help, that would be "great" :) I have different types of things I want to be "reviewable". So, instead of having a slew of HABTM... this new Polymorphic Associations schtick seemed like the best solution. I have everything setup as I thought it should be (so I think)... but it doesn''t appear to be working correctly. Here

Custom flash[:notice]
For the most part, my flash[:notice] messages fall into one of two categories: either a message stating that something happened successfully (which is colored green), or messages showing errors (which I would like to be red). Is it possible to set some sort of flag on these messages to choose which color I want to show, or would I need to base it on CSS and set the class in the text, i.e.

ActionMailer e-mails getting tagged as junk in Outlook 2003
Whenever an email is sent via ActionMailer, and the recipient is using Outlook 2003 (with SP2 installed), the e-mail is getting put in the junk e-mail folder. Since Outlook doesn''t give a reason it was tagged as junk, it''s hard to determine what to change. I''ve compared the message headers of the "junk" mail and a valid email sent through Outlook, and the

File_column not keeping value during page reloads
I''m trying to use the file_column plug-in to attach a file to a newsletter posting. It works fine if I get the form right the first time, but if I get an error, such as not typing in a required field, and the form re-displays, my file selection box reverts to "no file selected." Here''s my relevant controller code: def new @newsletterpost = Newsletterpost.new

Breakpointer not working
When I try to run script/breakpointer, I get the following error: /usr/local/lib/ruby/1.8/drb/drb.rb:837:in `getaddrinfo'': getnameinfo: Non-recoverable failure in name resolution (SocketError) It''s Rails 1.0 on OSX 10.4.4. Any suggestions?

Select SUM(?) Query
When using PHP, I was able to enter a query against my list of invoices such as : Select SUM(amount) from invoices where project="123" This would give me the total amount of all invoices for project 123. In rails, how would I do this? I tried using "find_by_sql," but couldn''t figure out how to extract the results out of this. Thanks!

Nil column results, possible to ignore?
For a table "clients" there are city, state, and zip fields. However, for some clients we only have a state with no actual address. The following code throws a "You have a nil object" error when outputting my client list. Is there a way around this, short of writing a specific case for each possibility? <%= client.city + '', '' + client.state +

Getting number of days in a month
In PHP, there was an argument you could pass to the Date function to get the number of days in the current month: echo date("t"); // Outputs "28" for February I don''t see anything like this in Ruby/Rails. Right now, I''m using a very ugly line to pull the last day of the month: @number_of_days = (Date.strptime(Date.today.strftime("%Y-%m-01"))

DB Modelling the Rails way - Opinions??
Hi, I''m trying to figure the most efficient way to model the following. I can think of at least two ways to relate the tables but from a client/server perspective! I''m wondering how to best (and elegantly)relate them from an AR perspective. A project has many people, A person can work on many projects at any time, A project has many roles, A role is performed by a person, A

select vs. select_tag
I have a "Users" object and a "Timesheets" object. Each timesheet entry belongs to a User, which is selected from a drop-down list. The timesheet has a user_id field. (The user needs to have an option to select a different user due to the way our system works.) If i use the "select" object, which is bound to the Timesheet model, using this code: <%= select

HABTM: deleting records based on attributes
Hello All, I am new to ROR, and can''t seem to get HABTM to cooperate entirely... however I might be abusing it! Before I try a different strategy I thought I''d ask here and see if I''m missing something simple. So say Projects and Companies are related. Projects can have multiple Companies, and Companies can be on multiple Projects. But, the same Company can also

Crazy @55 Inheritance
I have one table, called "people". Within this table, there are type "users", "managers".... etc. So, basic STI. Now, I want a "user" to have one manager, but a "manager" to have many "users". Since I don''t want to use HABTM... how do I set this relationship up seeing that :has_one, :belongs_to and :has_many don''t

Eager loading issue
I have three tables, Invoices, Projects, and Managers. Each manager has many projects. Each project has many invoices. When displaying a list of the invoices, I am using: Invoice.find(:all, :include => [:project]) Since the list shows information from the project table. (For example, a table showing Invoice Date, Project Name). However, I''d also like to show the manager name.

file_field questions
A couple questions about file_field elements. First, with code such as this: <%= file_field ''attachments'', ''filename'' %> Would the filename of the file I select be the value that''s stored within the database under the "filename" column, and then I would just add in code in my "create" controller to upload the actual file?

Polymorphic associations?
I''ve read the stuff about polymorphic associations here: http://wiki.rubyonrails.org/rails/pages/UnderstandingPolymorphicAssociations But I''m not sure what exactly they are and what their advantage is. Are they the same as HABTM, but they''re "two-way"? Joe -- Posted via http://www.ruby-forum.com/.

extra attributes in habtm
Hi, Posting here since issue tracking isn''t the best place to discuss. I can understand habtm is moving towards deprecating support for extra attributes in join_table, and to use :through for those cases instead. To clarify, patch<http://dev.rubyonrails.org/attachment/ticket/5216/habtm_join_table_test.patch1.diff>for #5216 <http://dev.rubyonrails.org/ticket/5216>

Fixtures and Relationships
In my daily development, I migrate back and forth between versions, and often do: rake load_fixtures... ... in order to populate my development database with fun data. Now, with any HABTM relationship, there are failures, as there is no way to say "which" fixtures to load first. Within an actual functional or unit test case, you could simply load them in the proper order, but

n-way joins
Hi, I''m somewhat of a Rails newbie and am trying to understand how to formulate n-way (3 or 4 way) joins in Rails (where the join tables contain extra data as well.) Let me give you my basic entities: foos id - pk name - unique bars id - pk name - unique bazs id - pk name - unique frozs id - pk name - unique then i have two separate join tables: foos_bars_bazs - 3 way join
