Generalized Additive Model
Hello, I am wondering if someone can direct me to the syntax of the Generalised Additive Model in R? In Splus this is gam(formula, ... inputs would be pretty much the same as glm I suspect..) Any response on that (or what package should I grap) would be appreciated very much. Thanks, Peppy Adi-Purnomo -.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.- r-help

Hi, Suppose I have a by b matrix which a and b are big numbers. How can I convert this matrix into a vector with length of a*b ? By column-wise or row-wise doesnt matter. My R version is 0.64.2. Regression on non linear model
Dear Help desk, I have a model that I believe to be non linear. The relationship is something like: Response = Var1 + Var1^2 + Var1^3 Can I examine this relationship using glm or lm? However, glm or lm gives out pnly 1 coeficient for the model which is on Var1, unless I created some dummy var like (Var2 = Var1^2 and Var3 = Var1^3). Is there any other function handling this relationship?

virus - free
Hello, I am wanting to download the recent R update off the web. May I assume confidently that R package from the website is virus free? I apologise if this is a very silly question, I just need to convince myself if the site is very hygiene. anova
hello, I have a very old R version which calculates anova table for a stream of outcomes say: 1,5,4,3,2,4,5,2 which are grouped into 4 blocks, say A,B,C,D, of 2 say namely X,Y What is the command in R 0.64.2 to do this? My very old R command is anova.table but this command is unkown in R 0.64.2 Thanks, Peppy -.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.- r-help

"logistic" + "neg binomial" + ...
Hi Folks, I've just come across a kind of problem which leads me to wonder how to approach it in R. Basically, each a set of items is subjected to a series of "impacts" until it eventually "fails". The "force" of each impact would depend on covariates X,Y say; but as a result of preceding impacts an item would be expected to have a "cumulative

Data handling/optimum glm method.
Hi there, I am trying to fit a generalised linear model to some loan application and default data. The purpose of this is to eventually work out the probability an applicant will default. However, R seems to crash or die when I run "glm" on anything greater than a 5-way saturated model for my data. My first question: is the best way to fit a generalised linear model in R to fit the

GLM for Beta distribution
Hi R-help, Is there such a thing as a function in R for fitting a GLM where the response is distributed as a Beta distribution? In my case, the response variable is a percentage ([0,1] and continuous). The current glm() function in R doesn't include the Beta distribution. Thank you for any help on this topic. Tukey multiple comparisons
I am embarrassed to have to ask this but can anyone tell me of a Tukey multiple comparisons procedure available for R? I have looked through the search page, through the FAQ, and in the index of V&R (1999), and I still can't find such a thing. I see there is a ptukey function and a qtukey function but that is as far as I got. Do I need to roll my own? -- Douglas Bates

glm(y ~ -1 + c, "binomial") question
This is a question about removing the intercept in a binomial glm() model with categorical predictors. V&R (3rd Ed. Ch7) and Chambers & Hastie (1993) were very helpful but I wasn't sure I got all the answers. In a simplistic example suppose I want to explore how disability (3 levels, profound, severe, and mild) affects the dichotomized outcome. The glm1 model (see below) is

Loess with glm ?
Hello, I am wondering if there is an easy way to combine loess() with glm() to produce a locally fitted generalised regression. I have a data set of about 5,000 observations and 5 explanatory variables, with a binary outcome. One of the explanatory variables (lets call it X) is much more predictive than the others. A single glm() regression over the entire data set produces rather poor results,

glm.poisson.disp versus glm.nb
Dear list, This is a question about overdispersion and the ML estimates of the parameters returned by the glm.poisson.disp (L. Scrucca) and glm.nb (Venables and Ripley) functions. Both appear to assume a negative binomial distribution for the response variable. Paul and Banerjee (1998) developed C(alpha) tests for "interaction and main effects, in an unbalanced two-way layout of counts
