Login controller additions
I have added roles and roles_users table and updated the model so that
my users can have multiple roles.
("Admin" role does always have id = 1).
I have added these methods to my application controller.
<code>
helper_method :is_admin?
helper_method :is_user?
def is_admin?
if @session[''user'']
@session[''user''].roles.find(1)

rails 2.3.2
Hi all,
I am using rails v.2.3.2 and if I put following line to my
ApplicationController:
include LoginSystem
and I moved my login_system.rb to lib folder:
module LoginSystem
protected
def is_logged_in?
@logged_in_user = User.find(session[:user]) if session[:user]
end
def logged_in_user
return @logged_in_user if is_logged_in?
end
def logged_in_user=(user)

Sessions or lookups?
My application needs to know if a user is an administrator, for security
and aesthetic reasons. At the moment, I store true/false in the session
by doing the following at login:
session[:user_is_admin] = authenticated_user.is_admin?
Is this OK to do? Or should I really be doing the following every time:
User.find(session[:user_id]).is_admin?
(user_id is always in the session too)
Is there

Can you have multiple before filters?
Hi,
Is it possible to specify multiple before filters in a controller...
here''s the thing: only one set of filters is to use the :except option.
Something like:
before_filter :check_for_session_cookie
before_filter :validate_user :except =>[''login'']
which I use to a) check if the user has returned to the site and has a
saved cookie holding login details b) check

before_filter and the application controller
Hi there,
I''m having a bit of an issue with my before_filter. I know that the filters
put in the application.rb controller are global for all the controllers. In
my application filter I''d like to allow access to the RSS feed method in a
''member'' controller and skip the login checks that the before_filters are
currently performing.
In my application my filters

A method accessible from all controllers and views ? How ?
Hi,
I''ve got this method :
def is_admin?
@current_user && @current_user.admin == 1
end
I want to be able to call this method from all my controllers and all my
views.
If I put this method in application_controller I can call it from all my
controllers but none of my views.
If I put this method in application_helper I can call it from all my
views but none of my controllers.

catch all error for incorrect urls etc
Hi,
I am changing a very standard old school website to rails. When I make
the change to rails, all of the old urls will not be valid. If a
person has a bookmark to an old web page I would like them to be
directed to the front page of the new website www.domain.com. How do I
do this? Do I do something in routes.rb?
Thanks,
Peter

newbie before_filter question
I''ve successfully gotten acts_as_authenticated working. Currently the
before_filter line for my admin screen is like this:
class AdminController < ApplicationController
include AuthenticatedSystem
before_filter :login_required
Only issue I have now is that anyone logged in can access that screen.
I''d like to differentiate between a regular user and

A couple of ferret 0.9.4 exceptions
Hi Dave,
I am using ferret at my site http://gifthat.com and I just had a few
exceptions pop up. I don''t have a way to reproduce them, but my site
just was listed on lifehacker.com and these issues have popped up
under multiple concurrent users (only twice though which I think isn''t
too bad). I am using two lighttpd instances both with read/write
access to the index:

Class Caching Problem [was Newbie Question about Custom Classes]
So any other ideas as to why my custom class under app/models is being
cached even though all the caching is set to false in the
config/environments/* files? Currently I''m having to restart WEBrick
after EVERY change to the file. The controllers and views are
reloading just fine and not being cached. It''s just the custom class
I created that''s being cached.
Any ideas

Determining Browser?
Is there a way I can read the user agent or something similar to
determine whether the person is using IE, Mozilla/Netscape, Opera,
Safari, etc? I want to dynamically output the CSS to the browser, but
I''d like to change certain things (in this case the widths of some
divs since IE adds borders and padding size to the total size of a div
unlike firefox).
Thanks,

pagination in acts_as_ferret
I''m just wondering where I would put the pagination for search results
when using "acts_as_ferret".
At the moment my search code is..
def search
@query = params[:query] || ''''
unless @query.blank?
@results = Tutorial.find_by_contents @query
end
end
Cheers

using ajax and layouts
Hi.
I copied the layout-example from agile web dev. in rails. When I want
to use ajax to create a search field including
<head><%= javascript_include_tag "prototype" %></head>
does''nt work when I include the line in my
app/views/layout/demo.rhtml. Name of controller is demo_controller.rb.
The search-field is in app/views/demo/observer.rthml and I have to

the link has no id value:

Routing via function
I have a route that depends on a username being passed in the URL, such as:
map.connect '':username'', :controller => ''user'', :action => ''show''
Is there a way to perform a lookup of the username before matching on
this route?
I am hoping to be able to do something like this (completely made up):

Linking to the paginated items from search results.
Using Ferret for searching, I''ve got results that I need to link to.
Which is fine, except for that they''re displayed on paginated pages
using Rails paginate function - so it''s not like I can''t get it from the
database or anything else. Anyone have any ideas on how to go about
this? It''s not so much a coding problem as a theory problem, and I

Installing Ferret locally on TextDrive
I would like to give the 0.9.0 version of Ferret a try on my
application hosted on TextDrive. I am currently running on the 0.3.2
version there.
Does anyone have any tips on installing it locally there? I know just
enough about Ruby gems to get by... but I am thinking it could be as
easy as passing a -i flag to specify the install location for ferret.
Then, the only thing I am not sure about

good practice or waste of time?
I have what I hope is a simple question regarding a security practice
I''ve been using in my first Rails app. I want to know if it''s
worthwhile or if the extra typing isn''t worth it.
I have 3 models that are related to each other.
class User < AR:Base
has_one :library
end
class Library < AR:Base
belongs_to :user
has_many :items
end

CSS not applied using apache
Hi all,
I have recently configured rails to run under apache. I''ve tried adding
a stylesheet using the stylesheet_link_tag function, however when I load
the page I do not see the affects of the stylesheet. The URL to the
stylesheet looks correct when viewing the page''s source. Has anyone
else seen this problem?
Thanks for your help,
Chris

Rebuild Indexes Issue
Hi,
I have some code to rebuild my ferret indexes but occasionally some
stale documents remain in the index even after rebuilding. The only
way I could find around this is to manually delete the index files
from the filesystem. Here is the code I have for rebuilding one of my
indexes for Gifts:
# delete existing entries
INDEX.size.times {|i| INDEX.delete(i)}
gifts =
