Just a couple questions on how I should go about this.
I''m working on my personal site. The design is complete and I want to integrate some rails into it. I''ve done a few small things before, but compared to them this is big. I need a simple blog with categories and comments and an archive. I want a nice posting system, but don''t want it in HTML. Is there something I can add or make, kind of like BBCODE? I pretty much know

Extending Bluecloth/Redcloth
I''d like to extend bleucloth or redcloth to support custom tags, e.g. I want to use markup like this: [pubmed:18332676] which shall be extended to: <a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18332676">Behav Pharmacol. 2008 Mar;19(2):121-128.</a> Does anyone know, if this is possible and has some hints how to do this?! I have not decided, wether I want to use

nuby: do models have to inherit directly from ActiveRecord?
Hello, I have a few models -- book, cd, dvd -- for which I''d like to have an abstract base superclass to hold some common stuff. That abstract class, I was thinking, would inherit from ActiveRecord. Didn''t work, though, and looking around, I found this: <http://wiki.rubyonrails.com/rails/pages/HowtoMakeAbstractModel>

create an object from a string?
I''m trying to dynamically create an instance of an object at runtime, from a String. I have a method that returns one of a number of Strings ("Car", "Motorcycle", "Bicycle"), and when I receive the String, I then want to instantiate one of those objects. Seems like there should be a way to do it in Ruby, but maybe I''ve been up too long --

Help with graphs in A4 size
Hi, I need to generate complex graphics which have to be shown in the plot window but also in pdf file, and they must have A4 size. This is the reason why I use width=8.27 and heigth=11.69. The problem is that I don't make it runs when I put something (text, lines, and so on) outside the plot region. I mean if I run the following code, it works perfectly, because the text "My

textConnection appears to be slow
I was trying to read in a file and delete lines that did not have the correct number of fields on them. I was reading the file as one character vector per line using 'scan' with sep='\n'. I was then using 'count.fields' with 'textConnection' to the object I just read in. I thought at first the system was locked up, but further testing showed that the

using markdown in a forum?
Hi, Is markdown a good language to use in a web forum application? How does it compare to bbcode in features and ease-of-use for non-technical users? I'm thinking of using jquery-markedit in that forum app. Thanks, -- http://www.cruisefish.net

plot() and lines() multivariate problem
Dear list I'm trying to solve the following problem since 2 days with no success. Could someone help a newbie, please ? I have a dependant variable which is diameter of shell, and two factors which are level on the beach (3 levels 'B', 'E' and 'H') and a hydrodynamics indice (3 levels 1, 2 and 3) To study diameter variations according to these factors, I may use

break axis using plotrix
Dear all, I am trying to plot some data with differing range in y-values with type="b", adding error bars and break the y-axis into two parts, one lower part from 12 to 20, and one upper part from 34 to 40. I have tried to follow the basic ideas from the script provided here by Jim Lemon: http://finzi.psych.upenn.edu/R/Rhelp02a/archive/56487.html My attempt looks like this:

where''d we come from?
I''m curious -- how many of us came to Rails from other branches of the OO world -- Java, C# -- and how many of us came from the design or non-OO scripting worlds? Reason I ask is that I''m finding Rails a blast and very productive, but I think one reason is that I already cut my teeth on MVC and ORM during two years of writing apps with J2EE/Struts/Hibernate. And in Javaland, it

Windows XP Pro and Samba (file saving)
Sometimes when I save a file to a samba-shared drive the application is unable to save there and asks if the file is write protected or if the disk is full. If I then save it to a local drive and copy it there using Windows Explorer, it can overwrite the file fine. Do I need to make that myriad of changes to my XP Pro registry? Most of the time it works fine, just from time to time it will give

ruby/amazon isssue
hi all. we''re using the ruby/amazon library (http://www.caliban.org/ruby/ruby-amazon.shtml), which totally rocks. but i''m noticing that when nobody has used our site in a while (it''s under development, so basically nobody uses it at night), the ruby/amazon calls sometimes fail. seems like something times out, perhaps. anybody have similar issues, or know what might be

Repeated use of dyn.load().
Good question Rolf. Rui, thanks for pointing out dyn.unload. When I started using Rcpp a couple of years ago I got burned by stale .so enough times that I adopted a policy of recompile-then-start new R session. My workflow does not include Rolf's "brazillion" repeats, so the overhead of this approach has not been too painful. The documentation for dyn.unload (via ?dyn.unload)
