unicode hacks - fixes for webrick and Safari
Hello! First, thank you Julian for the useful plugin ''unicode_hacks'' < http://julik.textdriven.com/svn/tools/rails_plugins/unicode_hacks/>. I have found some problems running my app in development on Webrick and looking at it with Safari (MacOS X 10.4.3, Safari 2.0.2). Some files are sent with different sizes (e.g. default css example, or controls.js ), and it

[ATTN] To all users of unicode_hacks
TO everyone who is making use of unicode_hacks! I have made irreversible changes to the plugin so that the routings are no longer overloaded. To call the character-bound routines, you need to use the "chars" or "u" accessors, as outlined in the docs http://julik.nl/code/unicode-hacks/index.html and in this blog post by Thijs:

Active Search
Issue: I am trying to get a good quality search capability across our site. I ran across ActiveSearch (http://julik.textdriven.com/svn/tools/rails_plugins/simple_search/) which seems to be a better solution for us than SimpleSearch (and SearchGenerator) as it is more than just word based. However, I am unable to get the project built and being fairly new to Ruby / Rails I''m a little

Rails Core Weekly summarizes the rails-core mailing list, a list dedicated to Ruby on Rails internals and its development. RCW is

Unicode HOWTO?
I am disappointed about the (seeming) lack of Unicode support in Rails. Is there a howto about working the most important limitations? For example, figuring out the length of an entered word: "???".length() will return 6, not 3. So if there is a maximum number of characters a user is allowed to enter, this won''t work as it should -- it treats strings as byte arrays instead

How do I get substring of utf-8 string?
I''m trying to get substring from a utf-8 encoded string. (say, first 50 characters of the string) String#[0..49] would give me the first 50 bytes not 50 characters.. I know there is jcode library, but it only let you count number of characters in utf-8 string. unicode gem doesn''t seem to help much. unicode_hacks gem seem to solve the problem, but it also seems to

Decoding Unicode URLs Properly
Please help, I have an application I switched over to UTF-8, but I am unable to decode URLs with unicode characters in them properly. For instance, if I have "item=Pur%E9ed" as a parameter in my url, when it''s decoded by rails, it returns "Pur?ed" and not "Pur?ed". Is there an easy way to fix my controller to accept these characters properly?

Capistrano Shovel onto Textdrive SVN error
I''m using the Shovel recipe to deploy my lovely app to text drive. everyhting seems to be ok apart from the deploy action which fails saying that there is "No such file or directory" I''ve included the full error listing below. The SVN definately exists because we''re using for development. Does any one have any ideas what might be going wrong? Thanks Tom

Making my site multi-lingual
Hi, I''m wondering how I should go about making my website multi-lingual. Basically, there will be different content for the different languages, and that''s not really a problem... all I need to do is give each content entry in the database a language_id. But the problem is with the non-content text, eg, "In order to access this area, you must be logged in",

Trouble with Umlauts
I am developing an application in German. This means I have umlauts. When I was using rails version 0.13.1 there seemed to be no further configuration needed for umlauts to be shown correctly. Now I have upgraded to 0.14.2 and the umlauts are being displayed at ''?''s. I changed the encoding of the page and it is UTF-8. I have also tried the steps listed at

Converting from UTF8 to ISO-8859-1 encoding
Please help, I have followed the rails wiki to convert my rails application to use UTF-8: http://wiki.rubyonrails.com/rails/pages/HowToUseUnicodeStrings I am able to succesfully cut and paste Unicode characters from other page, successfully store and display unicode characters. However, my client actually wants ISO-8859-1 encoding, which I''m coming to realize is somehow

UTF-8 page is missing images?
I have a chinese registration form that I developed in RoR at TextDrive, using UTF-8 encoding. It looks great to me, but some users are telling me that the images are missing. I''ve tried IE, Firefox, Opera, and Safari, on XP Pro, XP Home, Mac OS X, and Ubuntu Linux, and they all look great. But I believe that something really is happening, I just don''t know what. The

SuperImage plugin
Greetings all, This is the first release of the SuperImage plugin. The idea is you upload images to the database, and then pull them out at any size you want. Combine this with caching and it will stay light and fast. More info and instructions are here: http://beautifulpixel.textdriven.com/articles/2006/04/27/superimage-plugin-making-resizeable-uploaded-images-easy svn:

[Howto] custom and translated AR validation error messages
Hi, I''m putting the finishing touches on a multi-lingual application, and just posted a blog entry on how I did translate validation errors generated by ActiveRecord at: http://www.myowndb.com/blog/?p=4 I found it surprisingly easy, and thought I''d document it. The translation is based on a plugin I plan to publish really really soon, more info whith the upcoming announcement.

How can rpm "%{SUMMARY}" not be consistent?
I have been seeing something for quite some time which has confused me considerably for over a year, perhaps one of you can help me understand. Assumed: rpm queries are against _a_ database. Assumed: database queries against the same database, without changes to the data in the database, will return the same data. Confusion: then why are some of the summaries reported by rpm different? Each day

Scratch 1.0
== What is Scratch? Scratch is a little toy I put together in Ruby on Rails. Think of it as a spin-off of my larger Rails app, Elite Journal. If nothing else, you can think of Scratch as a demonstration of the new Action Web Services component of Rails. From the web page: Scratch is the minimalist''s web log. Scratch gives you nothing more than the meta-weblog API for posting.

UTF-8 and validates_length_of
Hello, according to http://wiki.rubyonrails.com/rails/pages/HowToUseUnicodeStrings Rails is not ready for UTF-8 in many places, e.g. the validates_length_of method. However, I see UTF-8 used in many Rails applications. So, hopefully, is the wiki page now out-of-date? Cheers, Nils -- Posted via http://www.ruby-forum.com/.
