How to avoid rsyncing incomplete uploads? (best practice on fileservers?)
Hi, some big files are regularily updated on server A. Rsync should sync that with Server B. If rsync starts in the middle of an upload process, will it copy that incomplete file to Server B? First tests showed it will. How can this be avoided? Comments on rsync-usage with big files and very active users would be very appreciated! Thanks! Peter

OT: Polycom IP330 user problem
I recently sent this email to a user in response to a problem report of phone calls going to voicemail without the phone ringing. I'm wondering if I've covered all bases, or whether there is some logical explanation I haven't considered, and generally what others' opinions/experiences are that relate. This is an Asterisk system, of course. ------- I looked at the server logs

large update - best practice
With a large update to be made, eg. the 900 package one I questioned yesterday, are there any suggestions to avoid possible complications? Two examples, I'd like to know of others too: I'm not running the most recently installed kernel, I assume I should reboot to that. I normally have a graphical environment running. Would it be better to: a) shutdown X and update from a straight CLI

Attachment. who can I best report this to for forensis?
Johan B, please let it through+ The headers are needed. I live in the Netherlands, where the police contacts for this sort of thing are grey and unknown to me. The Metropolitan Police (London only) in England is 100% on the ball, but they're under resourced and I don't live in their "manor" (London slang for area). I'd like to push it out to as powerful an organization

Cant get authenticated readwrite and guest readonly configured properly
Hi, I've spent the past 4 and a half hours trying to figure out how to configure Samba the way I want, and I'm starting to wonder if what I want to do is impossible. I've read the man page for smb.conf trying to figure out what magic combination of options will work, and have scoured as much Samba documentation as I can find looking for the right recipe, but I'm having no luck.

error message for too-large uploads
i''m trying to send users a polite error message when they try to upload a file above a certain size (1.5MB). we''re using lightpd with rails, and lighttpd is configured to not allow requests larger than 1.5MB. that has two flaws: 1.5MB has to be uploaded before i fails. i''d like to read the file size before is uploaded, to not waste user''s time or our bandwidth.

best practice for managing multiple stanzas within a config file?
What is the best way to manage multiple stanza within a config file? For a splunk configuration file (inputs.conf) I need to manage some thing like [monitor://var/log] blacklist = someRegularExpression whitelist = someOtherRegularExpression [monitor://var/lib/ourApp] There can be multiple monitor stanzas and each may or may not have a whitelist or blacklist. I haven''t found any
