[Tip] Application Wide Context Howto
Friends- I see more and more folks wanting an application wide context object that will work regardless of server software(webrick, mongrel, fcgi''s, scgi''s) This can be a very useful technique if done correctly. Here is a little info that I have gleaned on a great way to do this type of thing. -----Easy AppServer---------------- An easy way to get yourself an

Resolving functions using R's namespace mechanism can double runtime
It appears that the runtime for an R script can more than double if a few references to a function foo() are replaced by more explict references of the form pkgname::foo(). The more explicit references are of course required when two loaded packages define the same function. I can understand why use of this mechanism is not free in an interpreted environment like R, but the cost seems rather

Manipulating has_many :through associations
Hi, I haven''t done any associations before, so please forgive my incorrect use of terminology... If I set up a has_many :through association, can I manipulate the associated instances directly (like an Array), or do I need to manipulate the join model? For example, suppose I have two classes and the associated join model: class foo has_many :foo_bars has_many :bars, :through

Applicationwide BusinessObject/Hash
Hello, I''m a total newbie, so please forgive my ignorance. I am trying to port an application from java to ruby. In order to do that, I need to put the object containing all the business logic into something like application scope. The nicest solution would be just to have an application wide hash, where I can put all kinds in of objects. Where and how would I instantiate such an

Ruby server infrastructure evolution -> app. servers?
All, Just musing about this whole FastCGI thing (that I hadn''t even thought of since 1999 when looking at OpenMarket for a customer and even then it was "old"), and wondering when we might see projects/products that attempt to provide Ruby application services in a J2EE-like container. I see the Cerise project - any interesting information on that? I''m assuming

Yet more variable scoping pain.
Some days I wonder why I even bother with puppet. --- classes: - datacentre::new_york - role::appserver - elements::tfel0 environment: production: parameters: < set key/value pairs here > class ldap { < do some stuff that behaves slightly differently between different data centers > } class role::appserver { include ldap } So, I wanted to set some variables in the

Length of a string
Hi, Suppose I have created something like this in R: foo <- "myfoo" and I want to find out the number of character in foo (in other words, R should return 5 since "myfoo" has 5 charactors. How can I do it? I tried: length(foo) but it returned 1. Cheers, Kevin ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Ko-Kang Kevin Wang

[LLVMdev] LLVM-GCC & GV zeroinitializers, 2.5 vs 2.6.
Hello folks, I have a small piece of C code written like this: typedef struct { char a; int b; int c; } foo; foo myFoo[5] = {{0}}; With llvm-gcc 2.5, I get the following IR: %struct.foo = type { i8, i32, i32 } @myFoo = global [5 x %struct.foo] zeroinitializer, align 32 With the current 2.6, I get this: %0 = type { i8, [11 x i8] }

One package calling C-code from another package.
Dear R people We have two packages, where the first package (geoR) is required by the second (geoRglmm). Both packages have functions calling C-code via .C(). We would like to call C-functions included in the first package from within the C-code in the second package. Is this possible? An appropriate header file was included in the src directory of the second package but this alone did not

optparse::parse_args, using equals sign or not
Hi We've found that when using parse_args(..., positional_arguments=FALSE), it is permissible to invoke our script with either "--myfoo=bar" or "--myfoo bar"; that is, whether or not the equals sign is present makes no difference, and in fact both usage forms are demonstrated in the optparse vignette. However, we've found that when using parse_args(...,

call a function with explicitly not setting an argument
Is there a way to call a function, and explicitly set an argument to 'not specified'? My situation is the following. I have a function which passes on most of its arguments to another function. The second function, myfun2, serializes all arguments and is out of my control. myfun <- function(...){ return(myfun2(...)); } now, the value for arguments of myfun are stored in variables.

Possible to use dashes instead of underscores in rails?
Hi all - My boss is asking me if we can have dashes instead of underscores in the URL for SEO reasons. Apparently google prefers "foo-bar" to "foo_bar". The former will be found when searching for just "foo", but not the latter. So, I''m wondering if there is a way without changing any of my code if I can tell rails to use dashes instead of underscores?

Is it possible to define a function's arguments via a wildcard in 'substitute()'?
Dear List, just out of pure curiosity: is it possible to define a function via 'substitute()' such that the function's formal arguments are specified by a "wildcard" that is substituted when the expression is evaluated? Simple example: x.args <- formals("data.frame") x.body <- expression( out <- myArg + 100, return(out) ) expr <-

[LLVMdev] LLVM-GCC & GV zeroinitializers, 2.5 vs 2.6.
Hello Julien, I think the reason for the change was because there is processor context information stored in the type in 2.6. The reason it's there is to support multicore JIT architecture. --Sam ----- Original Message ---- > From: Julien Lerouge <jlerouge at apple.com> > To: LLVM Developers Mailing List <llvmdev at cs.uiuc.edu> > Sent: Thursday, September 10, 2009

Bug in RScript.exe for 3.5.0
Hi R Developers, I have found what I think is a bug in the RScript.exe in version 3.5.0 of R for Windows. When I call Rscript.exe for Version 3.5 of R, it is unable to open the file if the file name or path has a space in it. As an example of what happens, I saved 2 files with the code: cat("What do you get when you multiply 6 * 9?") as C:\foo bar.R and as C:\foo_bar.R When I in a DOS

R CMD REMOVE etc. query
I've been working on a fairly complex package that is a wrapper for several optimization routines. In this work, I've attempted to do the following: - edit the package code foo.R - in a root terminal at the right directory location R CMD REMOVE foo R CMD INSTALL foo However, I don't get the right code. In fact, if I just do the remove, library(foo) does not throw an

"couldn't find function" error message in R 2.1.1
Dear R-help, I have a home-made package works perfectly under R 1.9.1. Now I'm trying to port it to R > 2.0. So I rebuild the package under R 2.1.1. It installs and loads OK. But when I try to call some functions "myfoo" in this package, it returns error message: "Couldn't find function myfoo". I checked all available manuals, and didn't find any specific
