Rails and JRuby
Has anyone attempted to run Rails inside of JRuby?
Is that even possible?
Aside from the performance implications, is it a bad idea?
I''m thinking that it might be useful in very rare cases where a
Ruby/Rails - equivalent of a Java solution may not exist yet.
Any thoughts?

Is this an elaborate hoax/troll?
I sure hope so:

Seems like it''s getting genuine rebuttals, though. It''s actually kind
of amusing.

Is there a place for java in Ruby on Rails apps?
Hi all,
I''m asking this question from the standpoint of a developer with almost 10
years experience with Microsoft technologies, mostly doing server side
component and database work. So, I''m not very familiar with the java
world. Can anyon tell me how/if java development can complement Ruby on
Rails development? I''m not interested in how java can duplicate Rails

Talking to Java APIs
I''m trying to figure out how Ruby in general, and/or anything extra
Rails may have, can talk to Java APIs of third party server apps.
After quite a few search attempts net-wide and on ruby forums, and
with "Programming Ruby" in hand, I''m coming up with zilch. Either I''m
not finding it, or I''m not recognizing it.
I''m assuming there has

IBM UniVerse database adapter for ActiveRecord?
I''m facing a situation where I am going to have to integrate with a
legacy database , specifically the IBM UniVerse database, which is not
*quite* relational. It feels like a holdover from the dark ages of
computing.
Before I attempt writing an ActiveRecord adapter, I''d like to know if
anyone else uses this database and if I''m the only person that needs
this thing. I

Ruby on Rails + DB2
Received this link from a regular email blast, it may interest some of
you. I guess RoR is starting to gain more traction :-)

Fwd: Tricky block args
We in the JRuby project are working to get Rails to work successfully.
However, the array-indexed block parameter is not something currently
supported in JRuby:
x = {}
[1,2].each {|x[:foo]|}
This is not used extensively in the Rails code, but it''s used enough to
cause things to break in JRuby. We have been modifying the above to use a
temporary local variable, but obviously

Deploying only what you need with Capistrano?
The recent Rails security issue highlighted a concern I''ve had about Rails
deploys; namely, you shouldn''t deploy anything to production that you don''t
need there. Rails apps have a number of scripts--potential security holes or
DOS targets in this case--along with all the other application code you
need. There''s no reason you should have script/server, console,

Rails to Java
Hello,
I just started playing with RubyOnRails. It is indeed fascinating! I
have a question about using rails models to connect to backend Java
(i.e. EJBs) instead of database.
Any pointers will be appreciated.
Thanks and Regards,
Khaled

Multi Byte Strings
Hey guys,
We''ve been talking about the multi-byte patch and I think it''s time to
get feedback from you guys on a possible way forward.
We can include ActiveSupport::Multibyte with rails 1.2, and update all
of the relevant helpers to use the String#chars proxy. This will mean
that none of the action view helpers will mangle multibyte strings.
Similarly, if any Strings are being

Rails Monitoring, reprise
Last week I posted a question about monitoring Rails applications.
Basically, the java folks at my business cited one of their reasons
for sticking with Java is it''s monitoring tools. After picking some
ears, I found out that the one we''re looking at most is JBoss
Operations Network. And I have to say, it''s pretty neat.

I forgot. Why do we hate* Java?
Hi,
I''ve started reading some Java books. Gasp! What makes website
development with Java so bad? I haven''t looked at Struts but I''m
reading about Hibernate. Compared to ActiveRecord, Hibernate seems
like some extra typing to explicitly define the model fields, getters
and setters. I know that these are things that you can do in
ActiveRecord when things get complicated

ActiveRecord-JDBC is coming along
The ActiveRecord-JDBC adapter is rapidly maturing these days. I got the full
set of AWDwR2 migrations to run with it against MySQL last night, and Ola
Bini has gotten migrations working well against Oracle and Firebird. We also
have SQL Server support running most of our test cases (under non-Windows
environments too!) and have started adding support for Derby and HSQLDB
(Java-based DBs). Things

Java: How to interact with ruby generated fields
Hello community,
I''m new to rubyonrails and to this Forum. I have to call 2 Fields,
generated by ruby, from a javafunction (onSubmit) but when I use this
example it didn''t work, why?
<%= start_form_tag({:action=> "show"}, { :onSubmit
=>"post[testfieldone].value=examplefunction(post[textfieldtwo].value+post[textfieldthree].value);"
}) %>

Java/J2EE DAO/model objects vs. Ruby/Rails model objects
In typical Java/J2EE applications, domain model object do not have much
logic, they are basically data holders. It seems to be considered a sin to
put persistence logic in the domain model objects, instead it should be put
a DAO (Data Access Object). I have always thought this seems funny, after
all, what seems more natural/object-oreiented?:
user.save()
or
userDao.save(user)

Why Ruby on Rails won''t become mainstream
Why Ruby on Rails won''t become mainstream
http://beust.com/weblog/archives/000382.html
Kind of interesting, but didn''t convince me. Though, yeah, I can imagine
a lot of naive programmers sticking with PHP and VB (the type of crowd
that also doesn''t run their own servers, so they''re dependent on hosts
offering Rails for them). Rails DOES have an IDE - soon

Anyone successfully ran JRuby 1.5.3, Rails 3, Tomcat6
Hi,
I''ve been trying to get JRuby 1.5.3 with Rails 3 to run on the Tomcat6
server with little success.
Has anyone been able to do this? If so, what issues did you have to
overcome to get this to work?
Also, is this a combination that you would recommend for a production
site, or is it all too new and untested?
The latest issue I''m stuck on right now is with the mysql-connector-

Activerecord::JDBCError: Invalid column number
Hi,
I''m rather new to Ruby and RoR, so I do not really know whether this ist
the right forum to place my question.
For my first ''project'' I planned to create a simple online-viewer, which
grabs data from an existing database and make them visible in a
structured form via browsers. So I thought that could be the right
beginner-project, because I have only read datasets
