Fixing output_compression for Rails 1.1
With Rails 1.1 the output_compression[1] plugin was broken.
Once I upgraded to 1.1, I had to tweak it a bit to make it work.
Mainly it''s removing the code dealing with component requests, as
that''s part of rails now, and changing one function call.
Get the modified output_compression.rb file from
http://devblog.famundo.com/output_compression.rb and give it a try.

Beware of HashWithIndifferentAccess#symbolize_keys!
Hi,
I just posted a patch tot he rails trac for a bug we found where
running symbolize_keys! on a HashWithIndifferentAccess will delete all
items from the hash. Please make sure you either never call
symbolize_keys! (or to_options! which just alias it) on a
HashWithIndifferentAccess, or apply the path attached from the ticket

Fixing PUT to work with multipart messages
We recently wrote our API to be fully REST, and so user PUT for
updates. The problem is, we need multipart requests, but there''s a bug
in CGI, and it doesn''t work.
The rails code as a fix for POST requests, but not for PUT requests.
So we added PUT as well and it works great now. I posted this as a
patch in trac (http://dev.rubyonrails.org/ticket/5235) so you can get

send_file but not send_data?
So this is the original code I used, and it worked
send_file ''vendor/sprites/not-found.png'', {:filename =>
"sprite-not-found.png", :type => "image/png", :disposition => "inline"}
Now I switched it to this (going to be adding imageMagick)
send_data File.read(''vendor/sprites/not-found.png''), {:filename =>

send_file and ZIP files
I have an application which uses send_file to send a ZIP file to the
client. This works nicely when it''s run on our development OS-X
boxes, using mongrel from script/server, but on our production
server, using mongrel behind Apache 2.2. with mod_proxy_balancer, the
client gets 1 byte delivered :-(
If I use wget -S to the URL in order to see the full headers I see

2005 a send_file odyssey (or Rails and Apache don''t always play well)...
Hi,
I''m developing a Rails application that (amongst other things)
lets users download media files. These files range in size
from a few kilobytes up to several gigabytes.
All this development is taking place with Rails 1.0 on a
Solaris host with Ruby 1.8.2 and Rails mode set to
"development".
I''m using the Rails send_file method to send each file with

between these two methods of serving a file:

send_file and locking files after download?
Hello,
I''m working on a download service which grants users a one-time-download
access to files. The idea is to write an entry to a database table after
a successful download that "locks" the download link for the user.
After doing some quick tests with send_file I noticed that send_file
does not block until the user has downloaded the full file, but proceeds

send_file - PDF
Hi-
I''d like to load a PDF file into a page, in my controller:
send_file "/path to/my.pdf", :disposition => "inline"
However, instead of rendering inline, it asks to download the file.
How can I display the contents without downloading?
Thanks!

send_file works on Rails2,SSL - except for IE7/6
Quirky stuff here,
The current setup works fine for Firefox 3.6 and IE 8 but balks on
earlier IEs. The files are PDFs, .doc files, and other binaries but up
to several MB:
A. the users'' problem is a minor IE7 quirk: it works to download files
from clicking links, but if you use the URL instead then the browser
stops after a fraction of a second. Refreshing or hitting Return again

the user using rails send_file.

acknowledge the sent file.

A nicer and gentler form of spawner
I was working on deploying an app with switchtower, and I really
dislike the way spawner is implemented. The way it will relaunch the
dispatcher all the time just to let it die if the port is in use is
too brute force for my taste.
As we''re in a ruby script, why not let ruby find out if the port is in
use? Using the TCPServer class we can try and bing to the port. If we
succeed, it means
