Macbook for Rails Development
Hi All, I''ve finally got fed up of struggling with Windows and am on the verge of splashing out on a Macbook for Ruby/Rails development. I''ve seen DHH''s post about it on loudthinking but I wondered if anyone else has any more wisdom... Is it worth it over a powerbook? Any tips on good OSX apps for Rails dev (textmate, i know already)? Anything not working well on

Rails Development on a Mac Mini?
How many people out there are doing Rails development on a Mac Mini? I''ve been eyeing up the MacBook as well as the new MacMini trying to decide if I want to splurge. I''ve been doing very little Rails development thus far which makes the investment a little hard to justify. The Free Mini Mac ( http://minimacs.freepay.com/?r=16778073) offer seems like the best route but

OT: Debugging iBook --- help
This is way OT, but here goes... I''ve had an iBook for 2 days now and am debugging a web built with prototype/script aculo / windows / etc... I have no real experience on a Mac. Occasionally, there''s no better way to debug JavaScript than an alert in a loop... Once I have the information information I want from the alert, the loop may want to execute another 300 times. I

This is an operating system question, but it is with the intent of using R on that operating system. I have an ibook G4 Power PC that I am going to install linux on. Is there a better, worse, or perhaps easier (I am a linux newby migrating from mac) distribution that I should look at. I appreciate your help. I didn't post this in the sig-mac because I don't know if it fits there better

Might be buying a Mac
I might be buying a Mac tomorrow. I checked out the new 13.3in MacBook at the new Apple Store on 5th ave in NYC. I''m torn between the smaller MacBook and the MacBook Pro. We have a pro at work and I''m not that thrilled with the way it feels. I like the keyboard much better on the 13inch. However, I think doing development on that small of a screen could get frustrating. Any

MacBook Pro and CentOS-5
After a long, and quite disheartening, series of hardware problems with my HP laptop I decided to try out a Mac (late 2009 Intel based 19.5 inch). In the months since January past I have discovered this to be no significant improvement and I have grown tired of the persistent wireless connectivity problems and am totally put off by the upgrade to OSX-10.6.4 which killed HD graphics using Open-Gl.

R doesn't run on g4 iBook with Panther
I have a 12" G4 iBook with the latest os (Panther) with the recent updates. When I start R by double clicking, it expands for a fraction of a second and then, nothing happens. There is mention in the readme about using something called "i-install" to uninstall a mistakenly installed library, but I do not know how to do this. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Martin

RMagick on OS X - HOW
Hello all. I''m a seasoned system administrator and have no fear of building source packages on a variety of platforms, but RMagick has, until recently, evaded all of my attempts to building it on my PowerBook. Someone else just mentioned that they had trouble with RMagick on OS X (Intel, don''t really know if my advice will help) so I decided to post a HOWTO to the list. I

Ruby, Rails & Linux - Which distro
Did I sound like our President? :) <spin> I didn''t explain myself well. I am not thinking of buying the identically equipped PC laptop either at the same price. If I had a $2500-$3000 budget (laptop, Applecare + case etc) I might consider the Mac, but then in the PC laptop universe there are more options of going with the slower processors (T2300 or T2400) for about $1,000 less

Why Macs instead of AMD or Intel ? Just curious
My first computer was a Mac (SE30) but it was also my last so I am not without appreciation of Apples wonderful aptitude for design. Without starting a flame-fest why do so many ruby and rails developers use a Mac ? It seems to be a commonality within the ruby and RoR community. Especially laptops. The first ruby users group meeting I attended was about 50% Macs (or so it seemed to me - I

Rails page on Apple homepage
Apple Computer has put up a nice page on the Developer Connection entitled "Using Ruby on Rails for Web development with Mac OS X." http://developer.apple.com/tools/rubyonrails.html I guessed they have noticed David is helping the sales figures for MacBook Pros and Powerbooks. :) -- Posted via http://www.ruby-forum.com/.

Re: TextMate Bundle using Gedit
For what I know you can''t use the TM bundles... But like mgutz pointed there''s a lot of plugins. There is some alternatives to achieve something like TM bundles. Look at this links: - GMate - http://github.com/lexrupy/gmate/ (http:// alexandredasilva.wordpress.com/gmate/) - gedit-rails - http://github.com/mig/gedit-rails/ Think that GMate is the most complete. Very slow domU network performance
I set up a domU as a backup server, but it has very, very poor network performance with external computers. I ran some tests with iperf and found some very weird results. Using iperf, I get these approximate numbers (the left column is the iperf client and the right column is the iperf server): domU --> domU 1.77 Gbits/sec (using 127.0.0.1) domU --> domU 1.85 Gbits/sec (using domU

general questions about R on debian/powerpc
Hi, I am about to but a laptop, and have narrowed the choices down to a Dell Latitude 600 and an Apple Powerbook G4 Aluminium (Princeton provides these models at a discount for grad students). I am biased towards the Powerbook, and would like to run Debian on it. I have only used debian on i386 platforms so far. I use R quite frequently, so I would be interested in your experience of running R

Can''t run samples - Mac OS 10.3 w/ RubyGems
Hello - I''m interested in leveraging wxRuby on my PowerPC-based iBook. I''ve got Mac OS 10.3.9 and I installed wxRuby 1.9.2 using gems. However, when I try to run samples such as minimal.rb, I get the following error: dyld: ruby Undefined symbols: _DataBrowserChangeAttributes _PMGetDuplex _PMSetDuplex _TXNGetCommandEventSupport _TXNSetCommandEventSupport

Help needed getting rsync to copy from windows to mac
I'm trying to use rsync to copy files from a Microsoft Windows machine (XP, with cygwin) to a macintosh (10.5.8, PPC). After a lot of playing with options, manual page reading, etc, I have the following command, executed on the windows machine: rsync -A -X -a --delete --rsync-path="/opt/local/bin/rsync --fake-super --log-file=/tmp/rlog.txt" /cygdrive/c/DRIVERS "rsync at

I''d like to generate config files containing passwords. One (obvious) way to do this would be: $password = ''big_secret'' file { ''/the/config.file'': content => template(''config.file.erb''); } # config.file.erb has a `password = <%= password %>` line The problem with this is, that I''d have to
