new crashes: is the index/mail cache endian neutral?
Part of our migration plan takes our users from one endianness to another (big to little). Will the index and mail cache files survive? I'm seeing some new core dumps as the first test user is migrated, which makes me think... not. What about if we want to build dovecot 64 bit in the future? Will that cause problems too? Stack trace is below the log messages. I've edited the

any more efficient way to transfer snapshot between two hosts than ssh tunnel?
Assuming in a secure and trusted env, we want to get the maximum transfer speed without the overhead from ssh. Thanks. Fred -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... X45xx storage vs 7xxx Unified storage
We are looking at adding to our storage. We would like ~20TB-30 TB. we have ~ 200 nodes (1100 cores) to feed data to using nfs, and we are looking for high reliability, good performance (up to at least 350 MBytes /second over 10 GigE connection) and large capacity. For the X45xx (aka thumper) capacity and performanance seem to be there (we have 3 now) However, for system upgrades , maintenance

Archiving and Restoring Snapshots
I just received a special offer from Sun (marketing...) promising that I will learn "How to use ZFS snapshots for backup and restore purposes." The relevant doc is at... https://www.sun.com/offers/docs/zfs_snapshots.pdf It says: === Begin quote === Archiving and Restoring Snapshots Another use of snapshots is to create archives for long-term storage elsewhere. ZFS monitoring - best practices?
We''re starting to grow our ZFS environment and really need to start standardizing our monitoring procedures. OS tools are great for spot troubleshooting and sar can be used for some trending, but we''d really like to tie this into an SNMP based system that can generate graphs for us (via RRD or other). Whether or not we do this via our standard enterprise monitoring tool or

Does raidzN actually protect against bitrot? If yes - how?
"Does raidzN actually protect against bitrot?" That''s a kind of radical, possibly offensive, question formula that I have lately. Reading up on theory of RAID5, I grasped the idea of the write hole (where one of the sectors of the stripe, such as the parity data, doesn''t get written - leading to invalid data upon read). In general, I think the same applies to bitrot of

sync 54 million files, tuning rsync?
I'm trying to sync up 54 million files. I can break it down into different applications, but I still have to accomplish 17 million files in one "chunk" if possible. I'm using a fast (v440) cpu system with 32G ram. Originally I was running out of memory (seemed to increase like crazy with --delete on). I've upgraded to rsync 2.6.6 and the memory seems to be more stable

Samba 3.6.4 on Solaris - groups for user inconsistent
Hi all, I'm having an issue with Samba 3.6.4 on Solaris using Active Directory with a Windows Server 2008 domain controller. I should state early on that I do not believe this is a manifestation of the Solaris 16 group limit - the number of groups is well below 16. Winbind seems to be working fine - I can use wbinfo -r to check the groups that a user is a member of, it returns the list of

Status of Samba/ZFS integration
I''ve tried to set up a SAMBA file server that acts completely identical with a Microsoft Windows 2000 or 2003 one. First of all, the problem with the ACI ordering is simple: The Microsoft ACI specification imposes that the DENY ACIs are put on top. It can be solved with a simple chmod. Problem no.2 the Samba NFSv4 ACL module doesn''t interpret owner@, group@, everyone at . While

Building an On-Site and Off-Size ZFS server, replication question
Good morning. I am in the process of planning a system which will have 2 ZFS servers, one on site, one off site. The on site server will be used by workstations and servers in house, and most of that will stay in house. There will, however, be data i want backed up somewhere else, which is where the offsite server comes in... This server will be sitting in a Data Center and will have some storage

Preferred backup s/w
Hi all, What is the current preferred method for backing up ZFS data pools, preferably using free ($0.00) software, and assuming that access to individual files (a la ufsbackup/ufsrestore) is required? Rebuild of kernel 2.6.9-67.0.20.EL failure
Hello list. I'm trying to rebuild the 2.6.9.67.0.20.EL kernel, but it fails even without modifications. How did I try it? Created a (non-root) build environment (not a mock ) Installed the kernel.scr.rpm and did a rpmbuild -ba --target=`uname -m` kernel-2.6.spec 2> prep-err.log | tee prep-out.log The build failed at the end: Processing files: kernel-xenU-devel-2.6.9-67.0.20.EL Checking
