Tools rund um Rails
Hallo zusammen,
dann will ich mal wieder ein bi?chen Schwung auf die RoR-Liste bringen:
Schildert doch einfach mal eure Erfahrungen mit Tools rund um Rails, also
zum Beispiel Capistrano (formerly known as Switchtower), RadRails etc.
Welche Plugins setzt ihr ein, von welchen w?rdet ihr abraten? Oder folgt ihr
dem Tenor "Reuse is overrated" und schreibt euch die Sachen lieber neu?

partials and instance variables for file_column
Hi,
Sebastian Kanthak of the file_column-Plugin wrote once:
"is the photo object inside a local variable or an instance variable
(e.g. photo or @photo)? url_for_file_column only works with instance
variables, like all other active record form helpers. Could this be
the problem?"
So I''m using file_column in a partial, e.g.
<%= render (:partial => "product",

Patch: import csv on migration
Hi,
I just found a patch about importing a csv file in a migration:
http://dev.rubyonrails.org/ticket/5293
This feature would be great, but the patch seems to sleep :(
Perhaps anyone could attend to this patch?
Thanks,
Beate

Calendar date picker for use with rails.
Howdy folks,
As I was putting together a rough form for a rails app, I got to
thinking how much smoother (in my siytuation) a little calendar widget
would be than the default date picker selects.
Does anyone know if such a thing exists ?
I suspect it would have to be somewhat designed with rails in mind to
populate the right kind of post params for convenient use at the
controller end.

Theme wanted for new Rails CMS
Hi all,
I just finished building a CMS (open source, MIT license, same as RoR)
that is aimed at people with portfolios: graphic designers,
photographers, web developers, etc. Since this fits the Rails
demographic well, and I plan to continue actively developing the
project, I expect it to be a hit. Some features:
* 100% semantic XHTML
* Built on Ruby on Rails
* AJAXified administration

PHP and Rails integration
There a few php solutions that I would like to integrate with my Rails
app. Namely PHPBB(No offense RForum) and WordPress. Is it possible to
use these in a Rails environment, and what kind of issues/stumbling
blocks would I face if I attempted to?
Thanks,
James

Problem with encoding - characters such as öäü
Hi
I''m trying to use german characters on a ruby on rails application, but
for get ? on dropwdown menus. The database, tables and fields are
encoded utf8_general_ci. I have this in my application controller:
class ApplicationController < ActionController::Base
before_filter :set_charset
before_filter :configure_charsets
def set_charset

Show and Back
Wondering if I can get some feedback as to the best approach to handling
the following issue:
- you have 300 items and pagination is set to 10 items per page
- you are on page 10 and call the show action
- you then click back and it calls list on the controller
- the pagination starts again on page 1
Are people use hidden form fields, then passing the page number to the
show, edit actions?

Date calender instead of selectboxes like in Django
Hi,
please have a look at
http://www2.jeffcroft.com/2006/may/02/django-non-programmers/
especially the screenshot in the middle with the Calender. Instead of
3 selectfields with day, month, year I find this one much more
userfriendly, also having yesterday, today and tomorrow.
Are there plugins for this? I know

php-sites, and

How can one use GRUFF with locomotive ( I guess there is a wider question here, also)
Hi:
I love Locomotive and use it exclusively for my rails projects. I''d
like to install GRUFF and give it a try (a graph image creation
package). I know I can do sudo gem install gruff from the command
line for normal ruby and rails. How do I make gems available to
Locomotive?

Announcing SoapBX.com a new Rails App for making presentations
I got an idea less than two weeks ago and now as a testament to the
power of Rails I have released the first initial beta version of
SoapBx, with less than 20 hours of programming involved so far.
SoapBX is an application to create css based presentations and uses
Erik Meyer''s cool S5 css and js code:

With SoapBX you can use basic Textile and a

S5 slide show system
S5 - http://meyerweb.com/eric/tools/s5/ - is an html-based slide-show
system. It produces professional-looking slideshows from text with a
little xml markup.
Has anyone tried using Markdown to generate S5 slide-shows? I think
this would be a pretty neat system. I'm thinking a level-1 header
could be the slideshow title, and level-2 headers could define
individual slides.
Any thoughts?

Resource Bundle Roundup
I''ve recently made a first release of what I''m calling
"bundled_resource" which is a plugin that makes our lives *much*
easier when we need to use javascripts, stylesheets and images in
conjunction with one another to deliver a special effect or tool on
the client (browser) side. If you missed the release, read about it
on my blog at

file upload
This is probably me having an issue with the mvc way of living.. .I''m
used to perl/php scripting...
I''ve got a photo blog I''m making... and in past iterations of this
website, I''d just name the photos after the id of the entry. For
instance:
/photos/id.jpg
/photos/id_thumb.jpg
However, I''m having trouble finding an easy way to do this with rails.

Plotmath bug or my misunderstanding?
This is a followup to a recent post on using atop() to obtain
multiline expressions.
My reading of the plotmath docs makes it clear that issuing (in base
graphics) the specification
par(cex = 2)
doubles symbols and regular text in subsequent plotmath expressions.
However, it is unclear to me what specifying cex _within_ the
annotation function using plotmath should do, and the following seems

AJAX works in Safari, broken in Firefox
I''ve been working on an AJAX search, very similar to the Flickr one
in the screencast linked from the main rails page. I''ve been doing my
testing in Safari, where everything has worked fine, only to now
discover the results of the search action seem disinclined to load in
Firefox. I can enter a URL to return the HTML fragment that''s

why do text_fields appear smaller in IE than other browsers?
In testing my application on different browsers, I''ve noticed a few
differences:-
a password_field :size=>20 is smaller than a text_field :size=>20 on
Internet Explorer. They are the same on Firefox and Safari. makes my
login box look silly. the same can be seen on the login screen for this
forum. the password box is a little shorter on IE6.
more annoying however is I have
