Comparison between the S-TEC Zeus and the Intel X25-E ??
I''m looking at the newly-orderable (via Sun) STEC Zeus SSDs, and they''re outrageously priced. http://www.stec-inc.com/product/zeusssd.php I just looked at the Intel X25-E series, and they look comparable in performance. At about 20% of the cost. http://www.intel.com/design/flash/nand/extreme/index.htm Can anyone enlighten me as to any possible difference between an STEC

help diagnosing system hang
Hi all, First, I''ll say my intent is not to spam a bunch of lists, but after posting to opensolaris-discuss I had someone communicate with me offline that these lists would possibly be a better place to start. So here we are. For those on all three lists, sorry for the repetition. Second, this message is meant to solicit help in diagnosing the issue described below. Any hints on

LVM and ZFS
I''m curious about if there are any potential problems with using LVM metadevices as ZFS zpool targets. I have a couple of situations where using a device directly by ZFS causes errors on the console about "Bus and lots of "stalled" I/O. But as soon as I wrap that device inside an LVM metadevice and then use it in the ZFS zpool things work perfectly fine and smoothly (no

ZFS, SATA, LSI and stability
After having massive problems with a supermicro X7DBE box using AOC-SAT2-MV8 Marvell controllers and opensolaris snv79 (same as described here: http://sunsolve.sun.com/search/document.do?assetkey=1-66-233341-1) we just start over using new hardware and opensolaris 2008.05 upgraded to snv94. We used again a supermicro X7DBE but now with two LSI SAS3081E SAS controllers. And guess what? Now we get

Disk failure chokes all the disks attached to the failing disk HBA
Dear All, It may be this not the correct mailing list, but I''m having a ZFS issue when a disk is failing. The system is a supermicro motherboard X8DTH-6F in a 4U chassis (SC847E1-R1400LPB) and an external SAS2 JBOD (SC847E16-RJBOD1). It makes a system with a total of 4 backplanes (2x SAS + 2x SAS2) each of them connected to a 4 different HBA (2x LSI 3081E-R (1068 chip) + 2x LSI

WD caviar/mpt issues
I know that this has been well-discussed already, but it''s been a few months - WD caviars with mpt/mpt_sas generating lots of retryable read errors, spitting out lots of beloved " Log info 31080000 received for target" messages, and just generally not working right. (SM 836EL1 and 836TQ chassis - though I have several variations on theme depending on date of purchase: 836EL2s,

kernel messages question
Hi I keep getting these messages on this one box. There are issues with at least one of the drives in it, but since there are some 80 drives in it, that''s not really an issue. I just want to know, if anyone knows, what this kernel message mean. Anyone? can you recover a pool if you lose the zil (b134+)
I was messing around with a ramdisk on a pool and I forgot to remove it before I shut down the server. Now I am not able to mount the pool. I am not concerned with the data in this pool, but I would like to try to figure out how to recover it. I am running Nexenta 3.0 NCP (b134+). I have tried a couple of the commands (zpool import -f and zpool import -FX llift) root at

NFS/SATA lockups (svc_cots_kdup no slots free & sata port time out)
I have a Solaris 10 U8 box (142901-14) running as an NFS server with a 23 disk zpool behind it (three RAIDZ2 vdevs). We have a single Intel X-25E SSD operating as an slog ZIL device attached to a SATA port on this machine''s motherboard. The rest of the drives are in a hot-swap enclosure. Infrequently (maybe once every 4-6 weeks), the zpool on the box stops responding and although we

Any options on crypt+zfs ?

msdfs root -- client error "refers to a location that is unavailable"
I'm trying to get Samba 3.0.28 to work as an MS Dfs root providing a share that links home directories to the actual servers they reside on. Unfortunately, when I access the share from a Windows XP client, and try to open one of the directories, the client gives an error that it "refers to a location that is unavailable". I've done a lot of searching, and found a number of

defer_destroy property set on snapshot creation
I am running NexentaOS_134f This is really weird, but I for some reason the defer_destroy property is being set on new snapshots and I can''t turn it off. Normally it should be enabled when using the zfs destroy -d command. The property doesn''t seem to be inherited from anywhere. It seems to have just started happening. Here are the steps showing how it works. Really, it

Unable to allocate dma memory for extra SGL
Hi all; We have a Solaris 10 U9 x86 instance running on Silicon Mechanics / SuperMicro hardware. Occasionally under high load (ZFS scrub for example), the box becomes non-responsive (it continues to respond to ping but nothing else works -- not even the local console). Our only solution is to hard reset after which everything comes up normally. Logs are showing the following: Jan 8

ZFS configuration suggestion with 24 drives
Replacing my current media server with another larger capacity media server. Also switching over to solaris/zfs. Anyhow we have 24 drive capacity. These are for large sequential access (large media files) used by no more than 3 or 5 users at a time. I''m inquiring as to what the best configuration for this is for vdevs. I''m considering the following configurations 4 x x6

SAS/short stroking vs. SSDs for ZIL
Hi, as I have learned from the discussion about which SSD to use as ZIL drives, I stumbled across this article, that discusses short stroking for increasing IOPs on SAS and SATA drives: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/short-stroking-hdd,2157.html Now, I am wondering if using a mirror of such 15k SAS drives would be a good-enough fit for a ZIL on a zpool that is mainly used for file
