has_many :through scope on join attribute
Hi
I have a has_many :through. It''s a basic mapping of
Project
id
....
User
id
....
TeamMembers
project_id
user_id
role
What I would like to do is have different roles so I can have in the project
model
has_many :core_members, :through => :team_members, :source => :user
but I would like to limit this to only those with the "core" role in the
team members table for

Time-based cache fragment expiration
Hello,
I''m trying to figure out how I could implement fragment caching that
expires every x amount of time. I thought of writing a runner script
that would expire the cache and set it as a cron job, but that
doesn''t really work because runner scripts act on models and not
controllers.
Does anybody have any ideas?

validates_uniqueness_of and create atomicity
Hi folks,
I have a question regarding validates_uniqueness_of, and similar
before-filter-like events attempting to guarantee some DB state prior
to modification.
>From my reading of ActiveRecord, validate_uniqueness_of appears to
cause a SELECT on the underlying table attempting to ensure that a
record with ID(s) specified in the validates_uniqueness_of statement
is not already present, prior

Rails is doing what I want - but I don''t understand how.
Hi guys, I have the strangest thing happening. The funny part is its
doing exactly what I want to do, I just don''t understand how.
Basically here is my model.
class Role < ActiveRecord::Base
has_and_belongs_to_many :users
has_and_belongs_to_many :rights
def self.names
names = Array.new()
for role in Role.find :all
names << role.name
end
return

RESTful web service design question
I''m working on a Rails app that needs to expose a RESTful web service. I''m curious to know some of the best practices as it relates to RESTful API design.
Let''s say I have a set of related objects on the server side. I''ll use the venerable subscribers, subscriptions and magazines example to lay it out.
class Subscriber < AR
has_many :subscriptions

Is HABTM Dying?
For a while, I''ve been getting that HMT is replacing HABTM. It appears that
HMT can do all of what HABTM can do and more. The question is: Should I stop
using HABTM? Let''s take a simple case:
A case has many categories
For a given category, there are certain valid statuses
Category
has_and_belongs_to_many :statuses
Status
has_and_belongs_to_many :categories
Question:

form_for onsubmit
Is there a reason I can''t find any information on using the onsubmit
attribute with form_for? I''d hate to *gasp* hardcode the form tag in.

ordering after a inject
Hi,
My results are getting out of order after I do the following command:
count = result.inject({}) { |hsh, row| hsh[row[''name'']] = row[''count''].to_i;
hsh }
Why?
Here are more specifics:
My complete method is this (based off of acts_as_taggable code - not'' DHHs,
but the original one):
def self.sql_to_count_plays(lookback)

validate if different?
Hi, I seem to remember seeing the equivalent of saving only if all
attributes are different. I can''t seem to find that now in the API or the
agile book.
I''m using the acts_as_versioned and only want to save if the input is
different.
Thanks,
Steve

REST
I''ve been looking into RESTful approaches lately. Everything I know
my dog, Lelu, taught me.
REST (REpresentational State Transfer) is an architectural technique
for networked applications first described by Roy Fielding in his
dissertation at UC Irvine-- excellent work, especially considering
the tempting proximity of Newport Beach. As Lelu described it to me,

New rails site. Beta testers need.
Hi Rails List,
I need some beta testers for my new site: http://www.smarkets.net. This list
is literally the first group to see it, so be gentle.
Smarkets is a prediction market for Amazon products. It takes Amazon
products and turns them into a stock. The price of these "stocks" move based
on the movement of its Amazon sales rank. If the sales rank goes up 10%, the
price of the stock

help debugging an error
Hi, I''ve started getting an error I can''t debug. The error doesn''t generate
anything in my development log. A breakpoint set right at the beggining of
the controller method does not get triggered. It happens on a form
submission. I can make changes to the object model from with the console,
but not on this form submission. I thought maybe it was routing, because I

Populating text_tag with serialized data
I am using a serialized attribute in one of my models The serialized data is
in the form of an array. I want to have a text_tag for each element
contained in my serialized attribute. How would I construct the text_tag?
My model name is ''questions''. The serialized attribute is "answers"
So I might have:
<% form tag %>
<% text_tag ''question'',
